benny15ParticipantJust read on twitter that the kings and raptors have a deal agreement. The kings will be sending a second round pick(2014) for James Johnson. Johnson was the starting small forward last year and arguably their best defender. Johnson was also inconsistent offensively though and did not stretch the defense enough to open up space for the slashing Derozan. seems like a fair deal with Johnson’s trade value at what is now despite being a first round pick(16) a couple of years ago.
ESPNSteinLine Some news after flight No. 2: Raptors & Kings have struck a deal to send James Johnson to Sacramento for future second-rounder

surveParticipantwell, maybe Johnson can make some waves in Sac, he fills a need, but he still has not lived up to his potential offensively. definitely a good pickup for Sac being they only gave up a 2nd round pick.

HotSnotParticipantAm I the only one who finds this trade wasteful? Raps traded a 1st round pick for James Johnson. A season and a half later they take a 2nd rounder for him?
Add the crazy contract given to Landry Fields…
The draft of Terrance Ross at #8.
Great offseason Mr. Colangelo!

Wejustwin504ParticipantLooks like Derozan is sliding over to the 3.

ghettosermonParticipantANYONE is an upgrade over Travis Outlaw and Francisco Garcia so Johnson is well worth a 2nd rounder. Good defender and toughness.

TRC1991Participantthe Kings have turned John Salmons/Jason Thompson into James Johnson/Thomas Robinson +1 for Geoff Petrie this offseason

JoeWolf1I like it, Johnson isn’t a scorer, which Sac doesn’t need in their starting lineup, but defends really well at the 3 spot. I think he fits in nice in that role.

Brew Meister SmithParticipantThis trade leads me to believe the Raptors are making a little more space for another move to fill the small forward. Even though Derozan and Ross can swing into a 3 spot, I’m not convinced that is what they are looking to do long term. I really liked Johnson’s defence so let’s hope they have a plan to get some back.
Johnson to me is worth a little more than a 2nd round pick, but remember that the Raps aquired him from the Bulls for a late second rounder so they have not given up too much in the long run.

surveParticipant"Even though Derozan and Ross can swing into a 3 spot, I’m not convinced that is what they are looking to do long term."
yes, this is true, they can play spot min or temp at SF but neither of them are true SF’s. they are SG’s. however, I do think Derozen will be their short term SF.

Brew Meister SmithParticipantThis is pretty much what I was indicating. Although some folks have Derozan pegged as a SF, I have never bought into that. In Casey’s system, he likes players to be able guard and play multiple postions, and he does lump the wings into a group as a whole. Now that they have Fields, he is more likely than Derozan to play the 3. At the moment I see Kleiza or Fields starting at the 3. And I believe they still have a qualifying offer on Sonny Weems, who is at least a short term fallback if they want time to find their future starting 3.

fgrrghgParticipantThe raps will now have landry fields, klieza and derozan at the 3 if they do indeed move demaar to the 3. Although i’m pretty sure that only leaves Ross as a 2? I must be forgetting someone on the roster…

Brew Meister SmithParticipantYou have it about right. They have the offer to Weems as a fall back as an extra wing player. Plus with Claderon staying put for the time being, you can have both point guards on the floor together as well. They also have lots of options to play 3 bigs together, so even though I’m sure they will be on the lookout for another wing, they could start the season as is.

benny15ParticipantIm actually expecting Landry to be the starter at the small forward position. he is bulky enough to play that position and was projected to do so comming out of stanford.

JustaFanParticipantHopefully he can finally get it going and finally start tapping into his potential. Will he start in Sactown? I don’t think he’s been given a fair run anywhere he’s played yet. When the Bulls drafted him I thought it was only a matter of time before he took Deng out the starting line up… boy was I wrong. Hopefully this works out for him though. Do the Kings still have Tyler Honeycutt and what are they doing with him? I thought he was going to be the steal of last years draft going in round 2.
