The Gophers have arrived ad are crushing a thin and young Michigan State team tonight. Amir Coffey is nice he is looking like a big time NBA prospect and the team has nicetraits that should translate well to conference play this year.

They are long athletic and pesky tenaious defensively. They can really push the ball on the fast break and are fierce competitors.

They play Purdue on new years day which should indicate where the program is at. Lots of talent in the conference with Maryland, Wisconsin and my favourite Purdue but the Gophers maybe the best.

Northwestern and Minnesota are no doubt sleepers in the Big 10, I like Northwestern a lot they will continually get better towards the end of the season.  I like Northwestern as a possible Sweet 16 team, they have and hit all the marks of a successful tournament squad.

Spoke too soon. Tom Izzo really coached his arse off there. I thought he was going to kill someone on the sideline. I still really like this Gophers team. Never doubt a Tom Izzo coached team.

Gophers are much improved…this loss is a bad one and it highlights both their strengths and weaknesses.

When they can get out and run, they can be very good. They are long and athletic with Coffey and McBrayer on the wings and Lynch – when he’s not fouling – is a difference maker inside.

But when MSU turned it into a halfcourt game, Gophers had no answers. Their offense is drive and hope for fouls – which they got a lot of – but they can’t shoot worth a lick. And their bigs are incredibly foul prone.

Their top seven guys are solid…but when someone gets in foul trouble, they are in trouble.

Ultimately I’ve been trying to keep low expectations for this team. I want six Big 10 wins. That would give them 18 wins for the year, which after going 8-23, is a good step. A win tonight would’ve been nice and frankly they shouldve gotten because that’s not the same kind of Michigan State team we’ve seen in the past. I know its Izzo but at some point, that needs to stop being just an accepted reason for losing.
