akhan786ParticipantMike Dunlap is going to experience quite a jump in basketball coaching levels. The St. John’s assistant coach has accepted the vacant Charlotte Bobcats head coaching position. This is certainly out of left field and no one had him has a candidate.
To say this is a big gamble might be an understatement. I am not sure how a college assistant coach is going to take to the professional game. Mike Dunlap does have some assistant experience in the league, but I do not think that is even close to what he has to deal with now. He has a bad roster and a long way to go to make the team respectable.
He is a good X and O’s guy, which is going to be big for this Bobcats team. They are extremely young and in desperate need of coaching. If Mike Dunlap can turn the Bobcats around, he will certainly be revered in basketball circles. Not many people look equipped to take on that type of challenge but Dunlap thinks he can do it.
Michael Jordan is really putting his neck on the line with this hire. If Dunlap flops, the rest of the basketball world will be laughing at him. He has already had the worst team in basketball history. Dunlap might not be able to stem that tide. An unproven coach with an unproven roster? That has disaster written all over it. Best of luck to Dunlap with this crew.

akhan786ParticipantInteresting…I thought it was down to Shaw and Quin Snyder. I mean Dunlap couldn’t possibly do worse…
Oh wait…it’s the Bobcats.

joecheck88ParticipantI am very sure they hired him knowing he won’t be the coach in a few years. It didn’t matter who took this job, they are years away from being competitive. This hiring is meaningless to me in the grand scheme of things.

220ParticipantIt’s a pretty random hiring considering there are solid NBA candidates available. I thought it was going to be Brian Shaw or Quinn Snyder…I feel bad for the city of Charlotte.

Lotto StudParticipantI would have liked to see a inhouse coach such as Jeff Capel get the Head Coach position.

IndianaBasketballParticipantDamn I shocked… I thought Brian Shaw was going to be the guy. He deserves it.

omphalosParticipantYeah I wished Shaw would get the nod too, especially if he were to run the Triangle. But if anything this tells me Mike didn’t really make this decision and he listened to his advisors, I get the feeling Jordan would have favoured a Phil Jackson disciple, but he took a step back and followed the advice of Cho.

paradigmnParticipantDidn’t Barkley say Jordan’s problem was he surrounds himself with "YES MEN"???
Seems like hiring an assistant college coach might be the "ULTIMATE YES MAN"…even though he was basically St. John’s head coach this year because of Lavin’s appsense…but still…this basically tells me Jordan is going to have A LOT of say on how the team gets coached.
Honestly…the Bobcats could hire Phil Jackson (or someone in that caliber)…can trade the #2 pick…keep the #2 pick…make any other moves they deem neccesary…it doesn’t really matter…they still gonna have ping pong balls instead of playoff games for a couple more years.

JustaFanParticipantIt may be not be very hard to do but he should at least do better than last year. I know it’s not very likely but I really hope this guy does well and shocks people. With that being said, he going to need serious luck, prayer and some other help. Well good luck to you Mr. Dunlap.

frogmanParticipantThis is actually a no lose situation for Dunlap. Noone expects anything from this team so he can only overachieve and strengthen his resume in the process.
