Mike Conley has Become 1 of the NBA's Premiere Point Guards
A few years ago fans were outraged when Memphis signed Mike Conley to that 40 million dollar contract..They said Memphis was overpaying a guy that couldn't score, couldn't shoot and couldn't defend...
There were also some within the organization that felt the team needed someone that was better than Conley...Hollins wanted the team to select Ricky Rubio, former owner Micheal Heisley brought in Allen Iverson..Guys like Kyle Lowry,Gilbert Arenas,Marcus Williams,Jamaal Tinsley and Josh Selby were brought in hoping to strike gold and find Conley's replacement..But Conley outplayed and outlasted them all......
This year Mike through hard work and dedication Conley has become one of the nba's best pgs..He's improved his shooting range and has become a better defender...Since the Rudy Gay trade ,Conley has stepped up his game and provided more offense....
Conley leadership has earned the praises of Hall of Famer Isaiah Thomas and more importantly the respect of the nba coaches who voted him to the NBA's ALL 2nd DEFENSIVE TEAM...He has his team on the verge of going to the Western Confernce Finals for the 1st TIME EVER!!
I live in Orlando but i'm a season ticket holder and travel to different parts of the country to watch them play..In the past Chris Paul use to Manhandle Mike Conley,But during the Clippers series Conley outplayed him.And was 1 of the reasons why Memphis won the series....
*****I'm happy to see Conley's improvement.....Because i was 1 of those people that wanted to see him traded....
Yea, you've never believed in Mike Conley Jr. It's good to see you giving him some respect.
I think he's a top ten point guard in the NBA.
I still don't see him as a top 10 point guard
Who's in your top ten?
All of the guys are better than conley
I'd say he's top 10 for sure but does that mean 1/3 of starting point guards in the league are "premiere"?
I would take all 12 of those guys ahead of Mike Conley.
I like Conley, and I think he's underrated, but he's not in the top 10.
Other than Chris Paul, Tony Parker, Russell Westbrook, Derrick Rose, Stephen Curry, Kyrie Irving and Deron Williams... I think it's up for debate and arguable.
Damian Lillard, John Wall, and Ty Lawson are three that I personally don't think are above Conley. I'm on the fence with Williams and Holiday too.
I don't think Conley is an elite PG, but he's perfect for a contending team. Championship teams generally aren't built around a team where their PG is their superstar. Conley isn't great at any one thing (maybe his defense?), but he's become very solid at every aspect of the position. He's not so great that you have to build around him, but he's good enough that he can be the difference between a team being a borderline playoff team and being a possible title contender.
People over look his defense (and over look defense in general when ranking players) when you say he isn't top 10. He's either the 2nd or #1 defender of those guy you mention (Chris Paul is right there with him) You combine his superb defense with his efficient offense, ability to run a teams offense very well, and ability to take over in crucial situations, he's a top 10 pg.
It's such a deep position, that I don't think of it as negative to not be named in the top 10. I think he's a fantastic starter and someone that most teams would be happy with. I'm not sure he'll ever be in the top 10 unless he improves a bit more with people like Burke coming in this year and Marcus Smart and Andrew Harrison coming in next year.
Lillard and Holiday have much more potential than Conley, and I'd take them over him in a league re-draft in a heartbeat, but for a game tomorrow I'd take Conley.
Maybe even over Lawson as well, and given how inconsistent and injured Deron has been the past couple years, you could even make an argument there.
Thank you, I was reading through this list and couldn't understand what some of these people were saying. This thread wasn't about potential, so how in the world can someone say Lillard, a rookie, is better then Conley who was just voted to all defensive 2nd team, and about to lead his team to a deep playoff run. Conley isn't a powerhouse by any means, but right now he should be getting a little more respect.
You're thinking like how I am.
Mike Conley Jr is arguably the best defender at his position. He was ranked #6 in defensive win shares and 17th in overall defensive rating, both tops for point guards. When Conley is on the court for Memphis, they have a 98.1 defensive rating. Without him, they have a 120.8 rating. Memphis is +11 per 48 minutes with Conley and -17.3 w/o him.
Another stat to throw out there for Conley is that he led the NBA in points per isolation beating out LeBron James 1.05 to 1.03. And when it comes to taking care of the ball and not turning it over, he's right up there with Chris Paul.
Lastly, he steps up in clutch situations. Since Jan, he's ranked 11th in the NBA in points scored when the margin is five points or less in the final five minutes.
Man, both Conley and Curry are tremendous players but the 2013 playoffs have drastically exaggerated their values...If Kyrie Irving and Damian Lillard were in these guys situations, we'd be making similar arguments
Everyone keeps putting up these top 10 lists of who they think is better. Outside of that elite group, there are a bunch of really incomplete players. Some of these guys don't play defense, take care of the ball or cannot shoot. Conley is doing well at every facet of the game and it's not like he is one of those pgs that have to just keep things steady, he is going out and making things happen on both ends.
At a position where players never play defense, it's refreshing to see a PG take pride in his defensive efforts.
Conley might be the key in this series..If he outplays or plays Parker evenly,Memphis chances look good..
You guys are massively overrating these guys during play off performances. Lets just relax for a bit maybe? You know how many players have 'one good' season and then fall off from year to year? This is a sample size compared to the rest of his career. His leadership has never been questioned, though his scoring has been. Furthermore, the only decent defender thats guarded him these playoffs is Chris Paul. Who honestly had to put more energy into scoring to make up for Griffins lack there of. I'm just saying, this is like the opposite of a panic button. Its an overreaction button.
