Do yall believe in the hype? I read a article that see he is the best player Calipari has ever recruited even better than John Wall. He is a good player but he play more like a pf to me he played for st.patricks in New jersey with kyrie Irving I saw a few of their games this year kyrie looked like the best prospect on the team to me but Gilchrist can play no doubt but he a lil overrated to me maybe he will prove me wrong but as a sophmore they were saying he is the best player in High school regardless of class. How do you guys feel about him?
I agree with you, he does play like a PF, all his points come off of rebounds or fast breaks. He isn't that great of a shooter either. I kinda see him as a Gerald Wallace type player.
i used to agree with you up untill a couple weeks ago. he didnt impress me alot while watching the u17 usa games then i realized i missed a couple games. one of which was his 30 something point 15 reb game. then i watched some aau games and im convinced hes not overrated. the kid has a knack for boards but at the same time he hits the midrange drives past you or hit the three, but those arent the main reasons. the main reason is he out works everyone he plays and thats something you usually cant say for every player ranked in the top 5 every year. He also seems to never get out played
im hoping you're not basing his game off of this highlight video
that's my point, his most impression trait is his motor, he gets points off rebounds and his athleticism. I could see him being a guy that does alot of the dirty work but he doesn't do anything else great were I see it translating to the NBA.
I'd compare him to Damion James at the same stage at Texas. But I compare James to Gerald Wallace all the time, so that comparison is great too. He's not highly skilled yet, but he's energetic and a strong rebounder and defender. His mid-range is developing and so is his handle, but neither is great or polished yet.
It seems like every guy Calipari gets is supposedly better than the last. People say Wall is more talented than Rose and Evans. Now this Gilchrist kid is better than all 3?
i saw him this year at the u17 championship and he wasnt the best prospect for the team usa for me james mcadoo and quinn cook look like the much better prospects. i think the comparison to gerald wallace is very good.
iggy i've got a question
how do you know so many players?
i mean this guys a junior in high school and you're talking like you've seen him play a lot, and you know like all college players and stuff, so my question is just-how do you watch sooo much basketball?
good for you, and try to make something of it like becoming a writer or analyst
I've heard him being compared to Scottie Pippen,
but im not so sure..

Lol, for the last 2 years now I haven't played for my schools basketball team and I have a bunch of free time during the season. I want to be a scout or a coach when I get out of college so I've watched as much college and pro basketball as I possibly can to get an understanding of players and coaches. I think I do a good job of watching the game and being healthy by actually having a "life" too :). I don't like not being able to talk about stuff, so I watch games and try and get educated about a bunch of teams and schemes etc etc.
nixon i told you we could start up a site man...ohcanada has connections north of the border
If you guys wanna start a site. Tell me, I can get you a hook up no LIE.
I know a place to help ya'll start out.
yeah i thought the same as well from watching the u17 games but i didnt watch all of them. after watching all of them i was convinced he deserves to be number one. he doesnt have the most potential imo in his class but he is the best player right now and has proved it against every other guy at or near his position. when you are very skilled as well as having a high motor, this is what you get. be aware hes not a finished product either which is scary to be the number one player yet you still have alot of room to improve
I play against him in HS. last season only 10points 3dunk athletic freak
I will be the first one to say he will not be the first pick in 2012
I've seen him play at St. Patricks since he was a freshman and I can say he really hasn't improved much. He has always been that high motor guy who does the dirty work. His jump shot has improved slightly but not as much as you'd think in 2+ years. He's always had a great player(Strickland,Irving) with him which helps because I don't think he could dominate a game with his playing style.
I see Jeff Green in him tho
thats good but what he is now and what he will be by the time he enters the draft is two different players. how much did his team end up beating ya'll by?. Did he have to do much to beat ya'll or was it such a mismatch he didnt have to score much?
yeah except during aau he didnt have a great guard and he killed just about everyone he faced. i guess the same can be said for strickland and irving needing a very good sf in order for them to do well(stickland has shown so far to be a average college player at the high major level
They Merked us, they only played in the first half
lol...yeah im guessing he didnt have to do much that game. i used to be one of the main ones saying he wasnt as good as people suggested but that was after just watching a couple games as a soph. but after watching a couple this summer i can understand why hes number one. its not a clear cut/big lead number one because austin rives, james macadoo and quincey miller could all be number one as well imo
He can be a Ron Artest type without the psych doctor
he's one of those players when you say he aint that good then when you play against him he's always in your face trying to D'up and being so physical you say yo you going to hard chill out. For some reason he always plays better in the summer than in high school and he's not selfish at all. He remind me of Marvin Williams always trying to fit in and go with the flow to much. But i will say this no one in this class has a chance of beating him except Q. Miller. And all the college coaches still trying to get him to decommit from kentucky cause him and Miller can't play together
Yes, a lot of the reason he's ranked so highly are the intangibles. All he seems to care about is playing hard and winning. He's still 16, and in all likelihood will be drafted at 18. He's got elite, body control, reflexes, hands, defense, and unselfishness. When you talk about a raw prospect, theres nothing not to like about him. Yes there are more skilled players, but none as versatile. And when, not it, his skills catch up, you cant help but have an impact player. Maybe it'll be 20 points, or 10 boards, or 8 assist, or a clutch steal or block. But he has EVERYTHING you cant teach, length, size, quickness, anticipation, heart, intelligence, hustle, winners mentality, team player. He the player you want to be your franchise, the player you want to coach. The player you want on your team in your trying to win, because that all he wants to do.
And I would be more than down to contribute to a site.
I would also be down to contribute to a site if everyone else is up to it
I think hes a bit overrated, hes been "hyped" since his freshman year, hes not Harrison Barnes' and I would even go as far as Will Barton is a bit better than him. He does have a strong body for a young age, but he has a skill set of a "combo forward" which makes it tough to evaluate and how he will translate to the pros.
how many players are hyped as freshmen are ranked number one at that time then by the time they are srs drop?
yet hes stayed on top the whole time because ever summer he out plays his competition
and i disagree with him not being able to play with q miller. what ever coachs are saying that are saying it so miller doesnt go to kentucky.
bc of his motor. he's still kinda raw on offense, but his defense & everything else is elite.
he's like what avery bradley was. gives it his all, and that's why he was #1 on espn's list.
also he's young for his class.
thats always good if youre raw and yet you are still argueable the best player in youre class
i dont see anything thats jus shows me hes the best player in the class when watching him. wat exactly makes him so special. i watched a game when him an dkyrie played sum hs team and he didnt seem to have any kind of amazing jumper or anything like that. he rebounded and played pretty good defense but austin rivers jus looks the better prospect to me
He's not overrated. Btw he's WAYYYYY better than James was at the same stage. He is a great defensive player, has a great motor and outworks everyone. I really like his game.
Gilchrist better than Lebron at the same stage? I would have to disagree, Gilchrist is not even better than Harrison Barnes at the same stage, so its impossible for him to be better than Lebron who was the greatest High School prospect in the last 15 years.
I NEVER SAID LEBRON I MEANT DAMION JAMES JESUS....
Use your brain, why would I say he's better than LBJ at the saem stage? Iggy was comparing him to Damion James. Next time, read before you give me negatives ok thanks.
