Whats up guys I’ve been reading around and looking at the forum here for a while but just created an account to post on. What is everyone’s general opinion on the grizzlies and their future? There is a big mix of opinion here in Memphis. Personally, I believe they’re heading in the right direction this offseason. I wish we had gone after Boozer or Milsap instead of ZBo, but with a cheap owner you get what you pay for I guess. I wish they had picked Tyreke Evans instead of Thabeet to be the 3rd guard and eventually take Conely’s spot but we’re now stuck with the center we don’t really need and who I think will be a bust. The other 2 picks I think will pan out well in the long run though. Young and Carroll will be good role players for years to come IMO…

I think they have a solid future, but don’t expect a title or to be a contender any time soon. They have 2 good scoring options which is key for a a good team (Mayo, Gay), they have post presence on defense (Thabeet) and they have Gasol who is solid on offense. I think if Conley develops into an upper tier pg and Thabeet gets an offensive game they could be real good. BTW I love how you got my team, Memphis Tigers, in your picture.

    your right.
thabeet could be like eric dampier.
what i would have done was drafted evans and than traded conley cuz it doesnt look like conley will pan out either.

idk though because we all know they will never win a champoinship anytime soon. but they can make the playoffs MAYBE as a low seed (7-8)
but that may not be possible but maybe in about 4 years we could see them making moves.

and Randoplh gives you another scoreer.
    he is no slouch.
    randolph is actually good.

Boozer or Millsap would be better, and the Mem. owner took on Z-Bo’s terrible contract so thats not too cheap. as for Thabeet he has played TERRIBLE in summerleague and i dont know if he will be a bust but i hope not i like him.
Gay and Mayo is one hell of a tandem though and u guys will probably go lotto again next year and 2010 is a GREAT draft year so ur future is very bright

haha man the Tiger’s and the Georgia Bulldogs are my college teams. I’m gonna be a sophomore on full ride at Memphis in the fall and I’m really looking forward to our first year under Pastner (disappointed that Latavious Williams left though…)

Gay and Mayo should be great though…I’d like to actually trade conely and move OJ to point cause we did much better with him running the show last year. I doubt that’ll happen though because Lionel Hollins and Chris Wallace love him. So since thats out of the question, I’d like to see them sign Marcus Williams to be the 3rd guard because he really showed flashes in the Summer League

Yes. No doubt in my mind. They will pick him and deal Conley and probably Gasol or someone else to get another good player.

tbrnwtr-Pastner is going to be a great coach. I love Memphis man, keep me updated on all the things going on down there. I would love to here the inside scoop on my favorite team. Also, do you know were to get coahces email? I was going to email him about a job oppurtunity as a scout but I couldn’t find it on the school’s site.

    yall should keep Gasol.
    he will be ok.
but is Warrick left out the equation what do yall think?
i mean Randolph is still fairly young and productive.
i mean if he didnt have issues off the court he could have been a well respected left handed rasheed wallace???
    right or wrong?

Depending on how good he really turns out to be next year, I would LOVE to see the Grizz get Wall. I don’t really think they’ll be in contention for the No. 1 pick though honestly. I see the grizz falling in the 7-12 range in the lotto unless they get lucky. John Wall looks like the real deal though. There is no way the grizz could pass on him considering the other top prospects are mostly PF’s and C’s and the grizz don’t have too much of a need there with the Thabeet and ZBo investments. I do think Derrick Favors will be a monster next year and blow up big time

yupyup – I’ll keep you posted cause I’m friends with a couple of the team managers n I follow the team really close. I honestly wouldn’t know where to find it other than maybe on GoTigersGo.com or MemphisRoar.com. And even on those u’d probly have to email the head people and get it from them. You tried Memphis.edu right? Right now there isn’t much going on in the program. Pastner is flying back and forth across the country and trying to get some of the top talent in. I’d say the top prospects right now are Joe Jackson, Jelan Kendrick (i think is his name…top 5 prospect), now Josh Selby cause he’s Will Barton’s cousin, Casey Prather, Adonis Thomas and Austin Hollins…there are also a couple guys at Melrose High School here that he’s going after

MallStax – I think they should keep Gasol too cause that would give them 2 good C’s if Thabeet develops…i also think Gasol will be the starter this year until proven otherwise. I do think Warrick is the odd man out. He’s a good energy guy but I don’t think he fits now that we have ZBo. Carroll I think is a better version of Warrick and a better hustler. If ZBo can stay out of trouble he can be very good. I think the Rasheed comparison is good, but ZBo could’ve been better. He hasn’t gotten in big off court trouble in like over a year and I also heard him say he has his second daughter due in September, so I honestly expect him to straighten out

I have no confidence in their owner. When he bought the Grizz, and they were in Vancouver, he was described as a shrewd business man that turned rain water into evian (made his companys profitable). How is he going to do that in Memphis (love the city by the way) without cutting costs (on players’ salaries)?

Their team looks like it has some great pieces, but without a committed owner (like mark Cuban), or a big-market city (LA, Chi, or NYK) will he pay for: a) A top-tier business group to run all basketball operations, b) Take the step over the luxury tax to build an elite team?

Until the owner is fully committed to a championship, they will have talent, but never the type of team that will get a ring.

Yes, I tried Memphis.edu, it isn’t up for him yet. Also, Selby and Jackson are 2 of my favorite recruits in the class and I really hope they come to Memphis to bring us back to power after this horrible offseason.

I like both of them 2, but it doesn’t look like we’d be able to get both of them and them be happy. Even though Selby is a combo, we don’t necessarily need a 2 guard with elliot williams on the team. With that said I’d rather have Jackson cause he’s claimed to always want to be a Tiger and I’ve grown up seeing him play. Also, Selby is linked with Cal and World Wide Wes so he’ll probly follow the money * to Kentucky. As for the coach email, look on the other 2 websites and if they don’t have it then email the administration on the Athletics page and give them your reasoning for needing it

I agree 100% about Michael Heisley. He is the worst owner in the NBA IMO. The main reason we got ZBo rather than trying for one of the other PF’s is b/c of the 2 years on the contract left. Heisley would much rather take a character risk for 2 years instead of investing in an up an coming PF that would want 4-5 years on a contract

Jackson should be a scoring machine. Him and Williams in the backcourt will be a fantastic combo.

i thought selby commited to Tenn?

and yea i feel bad for warrick because he is preety good.
and yea Zach is a great ass player, good enough to be the third option.

    Gasol
    Randolph
    Gay
    Mayo
    Conley

and than they have good bench players they could possibly play spoiler for some teams.

he will be awesome. with Memphis’ strength and conditioning coach he’ll get big and he will be an electric guard. Also, look for Angel Garcia this year. He was ineligible last year but he’s qualified and he is a bad dude. He hangs out with my frat alot and he is the real deal

Selby decommitted earlier this week or late last week. Alot of people are saying its World Wide Wes and Cal messing with him because now his leaders are apparently UK, Oregon, and Memphis (all Nike schools and WWW has somethin goin on with Nike and Cal. He’s looking at Memphis b/c his cousin’s are committed their. Warrick was good in spurts but too inconsistent for my tastes. I’ll check out that new thread now…

Yeah, I wondered what happened to him. Is Matt Simpkins gone? Didn’t he get kicked off the team? Also, Salley and Witherspoon are going to have real big years. They are both very talented guys. Witherspoon reminds me of Borid Diaw to an extent and Salley has some pro potential.

Yea he didn’t qualify b/c the clearinghouse had issues with his transcript and stuff being that most of his info was from Puerto Rico and was somewhat sketchy. Simpkins got kicked off for breaking team rules and as far as I know he isn’t welcome back. Sallie is a lights out shooter and I expect alot out of him next year. As for Witherspoon, I see him becoming All-CUSA and possible and All-American mention by the end of his career at U of M. He is definitely special. Cal tried with all his might to take him the UK with him so that says something. I wish CJ henry would have stayed and he tried to but momma made him come home. He and Xavier were both on the fringe of staying. I wish Taggart had stayed but he was a dbag in the real world so I wont miss him too much…

i think Kentucky is going to go far.
and i feel for yall memephis fans because i think john calipari should have stayed.
    did you see Memphis recruits?
they would have been in the champoinship easily i feel.

and if Warrick develops a handle/shot.
    he should moe to SF.
to small for a 4 anyway as far as height,.

    .
    needs to be versatile.

I think karma is eventually gonna bite Cal in the but. He screwed this city after pledging his allegiance to the school upon arrival from the Mizzou defeat (even though he was already in talks with UK). On top of that the last day when he was “mulling the decision” at home he was actually on the phone with recruits (i.e. Cousins, Henry, Dodson, Wall, etc) telling them he was gone and they should follow him. He is simply a bad person. When he was here, we knew it but loved him because of the wins. Now, I have no respect for the man and can’t wait for the NCAA to catch him in the act….

Who do you think is going to start next year for us? I would think it would be something like Williams, Sallie, Witherspoon, Niles, Garcia. Maybe I am forgetting someone?

      I believe it will be:

      PG: E. Williams
SG: either Rob Sallie or Doneal Mack (the other will be the 6th man)
      SF: W. Witherspoon
      PF: Angel Garcia
C: Will Coleman (think Joey Dorsey with some post moves)

Bench: the odd SG, Willie Kemp, the French F we signed, and Pierre Niles….losing Latavious Williams absolutely sucks b/c we needed him as a combo Forward

Williams didn’t leave due to Cal. He committed wayyyy after Cal was already gone. For him it was questionable whether or not he would qualify in the first place so he just bolted for the $$$

I like their team they have nice young talent and i liked the thabeet pick i think he is going to be a solid defensive player for them he can block shots and rebound just what they need and also Zach Randolph is one of the few PF’s in the league that averages 20 pts and 10rebs even though he plays below the rim i think he will be good there.

Wait I thought Willie Kemp was a senior last year? Totally forgot about Coleman and Mack. If Mack wasn’t so streaky he would be really good. I still think we are a tourney team.

kemp and mack will be seniors this year. I’m looking forward to seeing Coleman. Recently at a Memphis Elite Camp his vert was out of the measuring system. The man can hop witht the best of em. The pic is on MemphisRoar.com under basketball. I think we’ll be a tourney team too. Just not a high seed like we have been in the past.
