Melvin Johnson and Briante Weber of VCU
Hey all -
I was wondering if you all had any opinions on the pro prospects of VCU's Briante Weber and also Melvin Johnson. Weber has been in the news recently due to his misdeameanor arrest for stealing an iPhone, and I believe has been discussed in this forum before. An undersized combo guard who struggles to score, but obviously known as one of the best steals specialist in recent years.
Moreso, I am curious about Melvin Johnson, a former Top 100 recruit out of legendary St. Benedict's Prep in New Jersey.
Also somewhat undersized at 6'3, Johnson is a lights out shooter averaging 10.4 PPG shooting 39.5% from three. Not afraid to let it fly either, Johnson averaged 5.1 attempts per game and broke out against Virginia Tech hitting 8/11. Not simply a catch and shoot guy, he is adept at creating outside shots for himself. He is an above averaging defender IMO, an active part of VCU's notorious Havoc system. A plus passer, he has conintually improved his ability to slash, and with (presumably) two more full seasons to develop. I will leave a video below. Thanks yall!
I think Weber will get a look in the second round, but probably wont get drafted. I like how Johnson improved his efficiency drastically between his freshman and sophomore years, but he still needs to show drastic improvement over the next two years to get drafted.
On the other hand, I think Treveon Graham could be a sleeper first round pick. He scored in double figures in every game except for three playing out of position. Graham is a 6'6'' two guard but because of Smart's system he found himself playing in the interior more especially on defense. He also was a pretty good three point shooter hitting almost two per game. This year Graham will become a household name and will be at least a second round pick.
Briante could be a late second rounder. I think he could really be a steal because he's such a disruptive defender and he's developed a solid mid-range game and is a good passer also. Melvin Johnson is an undersized shooting guard. He could get a look in the second round, but I don't see him getting drafted. I think Briante has the better pro potential.
