Is Melo worth it?

So the New York Knicks are willing to trade:

Danillo Gallinari

Wilson Chandler

Timofey "I Have Nightmares of Blake" Mozgov

and Raymond Felton

all for Carmelo?

Is it worth losing all these players for a scorer who doesn't defend well enough to win a championship?

you think the Knicks care

you think the Knicks care about a championship. They are looking for proffitable star players, and thats where the profit is. Melo is easily one of the most proffitble NBA players, probally Top 5. Melo in New York means money!

I really don't think so. But

I really don't think so. But by the end of the 2012 season, they'll have no other players but Amar'e on contract so they can be players for Paul or Williams by then if all goes well. If Melo REALLY wants to go to NY, he shouldn't sign any extension, whether he is traded or not. Then in the offseason, he can be signed by NY and they can have all the pieces.

Knicksboy I do think that it

Knicksboy I do think that it is not incorrect at all. As long as they are an annual playoff team with Billups, Anthony, and Stoudemire they will be happy. I respect your decision though and am interested hearing your veiw on the matter.

I feel your incorrect about

I feel your incorrect about the Knicks not caring about winning a championship. I feel the Knicks will be a solid team with Billups-Fields-Melo-Stoude'mire as your starters. I've gone back and forth on it, but I feel like this:

The Knicks with that starting line above can win 50 games this season and make the second round. Your telling me a team that went through a massive overhaul, gutted out the roster that had some talent (Randolph, Crawford to name a couple) and got nothing in return to a team with flaws, but making the second round (and this team can be a little more competative against Miami) a bad idea and not caring about a title is incorrect to me.

As for giving up too much, I say, scout the NBDL, scout overseas. I'm sure we can find a couple bigs overseas or a quick backup wing player in the D-League just hungry to get on the roster. The Knicks should still have a 2011 1st rounder, 2 2012 2nd round picks and a 2013 1st rounder. We should be able to find some guys to put around Melo and Stoudemire.....and maybe a Deron Williams or CP3, who knows?

Carmelo Anthony

Personally, while I like Melo, I don't rate him on the level of Kobe, LeBron, Durant. He's on the level right below that. Kobe had the Lakers competitive in the mid 2000s after the Shaq era with very limited talent. LeBron as well, leading his team to relevancy immediately. I don't think Carmelo can lead a team to championships or much in the way of accomplishments. With that said, I do think he's worth what the Knicks are willing to give up, because of what the Knicks can do from that point forward. They'll have opportunities with the potential draft pick coming from Minnesota for Randolph and maybe some more creative deals, to fill in some of the other positions or gain a draft pick. They can open up their cap space to potentially add CP3 or Deron which is critical for them. The team on paper they have now isn't going to do much in the playoffs, Chandler is a FA and Felton is probably gone after next season for them, so this is a good deal for the Knicks, especially if they don't give up the Russian center.

Also with Billups coming along as well

That's an upgrade at the PG position for N.Y. His presence in the deal cannot be forgotten.

Dont get me wrong I agree

Dont get me wrong I agree that theywould be a very competitive team, and with the addition of a guy like Nene, Kaman, or even dalembert they would compete for it all. I just dont think the Knicks cares about that, I think they just want to mae their fans happy. Knicks fans would be pretty happy with that team right there.

Really, you're just getting Anthony

Going beyond the throw-in's (Curry, Randolph, Mozgov etc.), you're trading 3 starters (Gallo, Felton, Chandler) for two (Billups, 'Melo). Realistically, it's a 3 for 1 deal, because Billups can, and more than likely will, opt out after this year. That, plus they lose out on draft picks to help restructure their team. In the long term, especially if they can get D-Will or Paul, it could help make them a lot better. But...in the short term (i.e. this season), I honestly think it hurts them; it really takes away from their depth (not like D'Antoni uses many people anyways though, haha), and they lose out on quality young players. But...they get 'Melo. Anyways, my point is, it hurts them in the short term, but really helps in the long term.

It isn't even close. A team

It isn't even close. A team with Billups, Melo, and the likes of Bill Walker, Kelenna Azubuike, and Roger Mason into more prominent roles is infinitely better than Gallinari, Chandler, Fields, Mozgov, and Felton. Role players are not hard to find, stars are. They cannot overpay. They might not win a title with Melo, Billups, and Amare but they might get out of the first round. It makes them much more attractive to other players who could elevate the team's standing.

Carmelo Anthony is a TRUE NBA

Carmelo Anthony is a TRUE NBA 1st option. Widely believed to be the best scorer in basketball, match him up with the best scoring big man in basketball, the best scoring coach in basketball, and his current partner in crime NBA Champion and MVP MR. Big Shot and you have a very...very...exciting team. They need a defensive center to go past 2 rounds.

Although really thats the base of a NBA Championship contending team, as long as they can get a low post defender they would be legit threats to make some loud noises. Look at Chicago with Rose, Deng, Boozer, and Noah. Imagine Billups, Anthony, Stoudemire and Defensive Center.

Are you choosing to forget that the suddenly valuable to the Knicks Timofey Mozgov was undrafted and signed after years of development in Europe. Player development and scouting doesn't end when the guys turn 23. A well run team should be able to find guys at any position. There are no finding stars under a rock in the Russian Basketball Super League, but they can find another Timofey Mozgov.

Exactly, that plus, you don't

Exactly, that plus, you don't need to find a starting center. The goal is to find someone who can come in, get tough with NYK and then go to the NBDL for the season and grow with a couple stints or two in the L.

Lucas Riva should be there in the 18-25 range if he enters

Keith Benson as well

Agreed they are definitely a

Agreed they are definitely a second round team with them( probably next year not this year since they probably won't gel enough this year to get to the second round with that roster) The only thing that may be a problem is the cap and the fact that there two best players will be two of there worst defenders and they are both ball stoppers. They will both need to change there game and that should be interesting to see. I think another coach that is defensive minded will really help because they already know how to score but we know there coach is not gonna force them to defend.

The difference with Chi is they have two guys who will be on one of the All defensive teams. That's the team they will have to contend with in the future. But they should be able to find some role players to make them a second round playoff team then they can just go from there. Hopefully Knicks fans wont get to impatient and let them build the team through the years

Until the final deal is

Until the final deal is reached if one is, I'm going to keep out of this. Melo is an elite player and despite all the talk about Raymond Felton's good performances there has always been this feeling the Knicks will chase CP3 or now maybe D-Will in 2012. Felton had a team option put into his deal by the Knicks for this purpose.

Billups has a team option for next year which the Knicks could trade on for a younger PG and some pieces if they did want to.

I still really want them to wait until the summer and get Melo then, they could send something to Denver via an S and T then but they keep much more of the current core. But Melo on that team and you have a legit 50 wins team!

They thing they have realized

They thing they have realized about waiting till the summer is that Melo may decide on the Nets because he doesn't wanna leave 40million dollars on the table( he can't ever make that up). I personally think the Knicks are in a win win because they already have a young playoff team.

If Melo wanted to be a Net,

If Melo wanted to be a Net, he'd already be one.

The Knicks should just take Melo and Billups, play out this season, pick up Billups' option for 14 mil then in 2012, let Billups walk and use the cap space for either Chris Paul or Deron Williams (if they hit the market of course). I agree as well this is a win-win for New York.

I don't think he wants to be

I don't think he wants to be a Net either. But i also think he will if the Knicks decide to not to continue to add players to the deal, the reason......That big money. And that could cause a ripple effect because by the time Dwill and CP3 are free agents the Nets will be in Brooklyn. This will be a very interesting two seasons if Melo ends up going to the Nets

Average with potential and

Average with potential and from a NBA poll, is attractive to alot of NBA players once they move. And in the east they can make the playoffs (the next year doubt if they could this year). Plus draft picks they can trade for players. Its like Amare, you get one star to come to you're team others will become interested. If Amare didn't go to the Knicks no one else would be mentioning going there. If everyone is healthy then you have two borderline Allstar talents (Brook and Harris) and a Allstar SF. The only thing that is Keeping the Nets as a option though is that Contract and if the Knicks decide they will not add another player to the trade

And i'm willing to bet if they agree too adding Tim they Nuggets will then ask for Landry to see if they can get him too. I think this is gonna be very interesting till the very end

Yeah but we have seen that

Yeah but we have seen that the Nuggets keep changing every time the Knicks agree. They are being very smart by continuing to ask for more until the Knicks say no. If both sides were in agreement the deal would already be done. If it was up to Melo the deal would be done IMO.

True, but I doubt at this

True, but I doubt at this point Landry Fields is going anywhere now. They made the option: Gallo or Fields, and apparently, the Nuggets went with Gallo. If the Knicks go and say "Alright, Mozzy's in" I just don't see Denver saying no now at this point. They also have 2 1st round picks coming in from the Nets.

you

guys do know tht chicagos two best players are terrible defenders. rose and booz are horrible just like melo and amare. melo can be a solid defender when he feels like it lol. give them a dfensive big who can rebound...they can get it in the draft or trade AR for one...keeping fields means we would have a 2 gaurd who would be perfect for a team with muiltiple stars.billups will be so important with his playoff experience. and our three best players amare melo billups are all battle tested in playoffs. lets get this drama over with and play some ball

But the problem with that is

But the problem with that is the bulls have Noah,Deng and a defensive minded coach. The Knicks have Turiaf but he gets in foul trouble. You can live with having a PF who isn't a great defender if you have a Center who is as well as good team defense. Knicks don't have good team defense though.

You're right Melo CAN be a solid defender but he chooses not too and probably will be a even worst defender since he would be playing for a Coach who doesn't stress defense

Carmelo cannot be a high level defender

Lateral quickness simply isn't good enough to defend Lebron, Kobe, Durant etc. wings on a game to game basis. However with Fields seemingly remaining on the roster, and personally I think on this potentially new Knicks team he is a better fit than Gallinari, that can be hidden to a certain extent with Fields defending the better wing. They also could look at bringing back Ewing Jr. to play some defense.

I don't think they can go 7

I don't think they can go 7 with the Bulls. They gain Melo who's a scorer so how many more ppg do you think they get?. Rose east up Billups but Billups gets his points. edge rose. Amare and Boozer is a wash since neither plays defense. Melo out scores Deng but Deng is still getting his points. Noah Gets 15 plus on any big man they put on him. and then the bench of the bulls out play The Knicks bench, not to mention it takes time to gel when you have new players. You wont see what they are fully capable of untill next season if this trade goes down

I think with a slowed down

I think with a slowed down pace, Billups and his experience comes in to play. I think Boozer will allow his points to Amar'e and vice versa. Melo should score more then Deng, but Deng is playing at a good defensive level and might lower Melo.

There, it goes to the rest of the guys. Douglas, Mason, Fields, Walker, WilliamsTuriaf vs Noah, Korver, K.Thomas Brewer and Gibson. I think Chicago would win the series, but I can see NYK pushing them.

NYK does have a win over CHI with both Boozer and Noah on the court.

Knicks Dense is what will

Knicks Dense is what will hurt them. The game is slowed down and defense is more important int he Playoffs. Rose has played int he playoffs twice already so he is ready for a first round series. Experience and experience is nice but Rose is one of the best players/point guards in the NBA and he is first round playoff tested. I see maybe 4-2. We are talking about a possible Knicks team where the players have less than half a season to get used to each other and the system( you see how it took a lil time for the the players to get used to the system early in the season)

Knicks v Bulls

I can see the Knicks making it interesting, depending on how Stoudamire plays. Noah would play Amare, not Boozer. Noah has the type of defense that can affect Amare. Another question is if Billups can consistently stay in front of Rose. The match-ups are mostly in favor of Chicago. The bench is also advantage Chicago. The Bulls have the length, tenacity and physicality to beat the Knicks. The Knicks also would struggle v Orlando due to Dwight, Turiaf is simply too short. They aren't quite where they need to be with their roster but they are getting there, if this trade goes through.

If the Knicks can put Billups and Melo with Amare Stoudemire (knowing that Billups will expire in 2012 when Paul and Deron Williams are UFAs and Russell Westbrook is a RFA) I don't think there is anyone on that roster who cannot be easily replaced. Timofey Mozgov is a big body. If they can't find another Mozgov, then they have scouts who aren't very good at their jobs. This is why Otis Smith has done such a poor job. Why match the offer on J.J. Redick? Finding a three point specialist isn’t that hard. They matched and are now paying more in tax and salary to a backup shooting guard that does one thing well more than Miami does Dwyane Wade. Teams don’t win because of Timofey Mozgov, Danilo Gallinari, Wilson Chandler, or Landry Fields. They win because of the stars. If the get the stars, the supplemental pieces aren’t hard to find. With the pieces the Knicks have, they aren't going anywhere. They are a mediocre team. That isn't the goal. With Melo, they'll be better with a real possibility for being a team that players will want to be a part. Not in the way New Yorkers think all players want to be in New York because it is New York when in reality they paid more than anyone else, but because the stars they have in place make it attractive.

Im saying any team can find

Im saying any team can find Timofey Mozgov, thats why he should be a tradable asset. They should be able to replace him easily, but if they want to win a championship replacing him should not be what they want to do, getting a better Center then just Mozgov is what they should do. I dont care who thinks differently no team in the NBA playing Mozgov 20-mpg can win a champonship when going up against frontcourts including Odom, Bynum, Gasol, or Oneal, Oneal, Perkins, Garnett or Boozer, Noah, Gibson in a bestof 7 series. I maybe proven wrong about Chicago but Ill take my chances with my predictions.

Knicks aren't a .500 team

Knicks aren't a .500 team they were more than just a few games over before they hit a losing streak. I wouldn't say their a mediocre team either.

Also they've played the tough part of the schedule already no more games against the Spurs, Lakers, Thunder and outside of the Magic, Heat and Celtics they face mostly weak teams.

The point isn't to give up anyone for Mello, thats why when Walsh was negotiating he wasn't going to give up that package. Dolan is the one who's taken over and is willing to give up all those players. Yeah the Knicks can have Amare, Mello and Billups even. and Mello but there is no guarantee they'll get Deron Williams or Chris Paul.

Yeah Mello is better than Chandler, Gallo and anyone except Amare on the team. Still, it doesn't make sense to give up assets for someone they can get in free agency or for a lot less. Also rumor is Billups wants to return to Denver and what is the purpose of moving Felton if he is only guaranteed a contract for next year the following year is a team option.

An announcer on ESPN said the Knicks are bidding against themselves and with Mello not committing to the Nets he's right on. Anyway it seems the Nuggets can get any package out of the Knicks they want.

I think it is worth trading for Melo. I still doubt they will win a championship with Carmelo, but they have a better shot than with the roster they have now. Right now they aren't looking like they could easily be a championship team in the immediate future.
