KHAM83ParticipantHoopshype reports that the Dallas is talking to the Celtics for Rondo. Boston is obviously ona fire sale and wants picks. I’m guessing they’ll take Marion and Carter to match Rondo’s contract and ask for a Mavericks’ unprotected 2014 pick. Mavs thinking they can get Howard and go forward with Dirk/Howard/Rondo. This makes Dallasmore attractive for Dwight, but is a risk bc if they miss on Howard, mavericks pick could very well be in lotto. If they get Howard, Dirk’s contract expires next year and will resign for less giving Dallas about 10 million in cap space. This is interesting.

aramboneParticipantAnother desperate team to take advantage of for the celtics. Also, celtics have a vested interest in keeping Dwight away from LAC, that being the 2015 unprotected first rounder from the doc deal.
Larkin, Ledo, 2015 + 2017 unprotected firsts + contracts like Marion.
Rondo and Dwight cant shoot fts, and both have personalities that don’t make for a harmonious lockerroom. And Dwight will alienate Dirk by wanting his shots and attention.
They will prob be very good next year, but less so after that. Plus neither Rondo nor Dwight have a lot of friends, so recruiting other stars other than josh smith will be very difficult.

LipstickParticipantBasically, Philadelphia and Boston will hold 1/3 of the 2014 picks by the trade deadline.

druneave3ParticipantMore picks for Celtics? They have 9 first rounders over the next 5 years already!

aramboneParticipantit’s not like ’14 is the last deep draft ever. Matter of fact, every draft has stud players outside the lottery. The art of drafting.
And look at the pelicans, they just traded the 6th pick in a bad draft + another pick for a 23 yo all star pg who could be first team all nba for a decade.
And the more picks you have the more gambles you can take, and draft both for need and bpa while keeping payroll low.

BothTeamsPlayedHardParticipantI would tend to believe there will be about 10-20 teams who will be pursuing Rondo if Boston is willing to deal him. I am skeptical as to whether Ainge would want to deal him now. It seems to me that with the recent trade and Rondo likely missing the first half of the season (and who knows with knees given what we saw with Dirk, Wall, Rose, Granger, Maynor, etc just last year), Boston might be in the lottery ball business and try to be as close to the Charlottes and Orlandos of the world as possible. An injured Rondo for half a season would better serve that goal (especially if he is healthy enough to be deal in February) than a comparably paid healthy player they would get in return.

LipstickParticipantApparently the Celtics want Dirk. What on earth…
edit: according to Marc Stein

Prime TimeParticipantI hated the New Jersey deal, and I’ll probably hate when we trade Rondo. I do understand it’s time to rebuild, so I hope Ainge makes a good deal for Rondo.
Here’s to hoping we win the Wiggins sweepstakes.

BothTeamsPlayedHardParticipantWhat really is sad, though, is that Rondo might not ever get the chance to be “the guy” with Boston. It seems like the writing is on the wall for what Boston is doing, and obviously the injury is a factor. Still, there is absolutely no guarantee that a team that trades for Rondo ends up laughing all the way to games in May and June for years to come.

HitsterParticipantIf there was a year to have multiple picks then 2014 could be it. Dirk has a no trade clause so what is Mark Stein talking about.

halfdecayedParticipantWell be assured, the future Rondo deal cannot be much worse than the KG/Pierce one ..

LipstickParticipantI’m not sure how this works though. Like Hitster said, Dirk has a no trade clause on his expiring contract so he’s not going to want to end up in Boston.
Meanwhile, Shawn Marion has an ETO for this year. Why would he opt in only to be traded to a rebuilding Celtics squad? Unless Boston wants to acquire him, then buy him out, I don’t see it happening unless a (title-contending) third party is involved that Marion can go to who also has expirings to give to Boston. That would mean Richard Jefferson in Golden State + a draft pick, for example, but the Warriors are recruiting Dwight Howard.
Other options: Vince Carter…picks…Larkin…trade exemptions? It just seems like other teams can offer better packages at the moment.

he_gets_bucketsParticipantI’m not sure getting Rondo and Howard would put us over the hump in the west, especially if we are giving up picks and our young talent (Ledo and Larkin) in order to get it. I feel like we would just be a good but not great playoff team for a number of years, and as others have eluded to, Howard and Rondo are both pretty abrassive and not well liked around the league, and would cause problems bringing other guys in. I’d rather we just ignore Dwight, tank this season, and go all out in the FA and Draft in 2014, and maybe, just maybe, give Dirk a season or two more of a decent team before he retires.
