Anybody know what the Dallas Mavericks plans are for this offseason? They have my favourite coach in the league Carlisle I think hes amongst the best, Dennis Smith who has one of the highest upsides in the league, a gauranteed top 5 draft pick that has 3rd best lottery odds and 34th pick as key rebuilding assets.

Jonathan Motley is also a great piece he could be a featured starter on a playoff team. I felt Motley should have been a 1st round pick and was surprised he went undrafted. To me he is just as valuable as guys like Adebayo, both Collins rookies and would be a big part of my future plans. The Mavs were slow to give him minutes this year and when they finally put him in the lineup he gave them 9 points and 4.5 rebounds per 16 mpg and actually won some games for the tanking Mavs. Oops. Because of that they couldnt give him tons of minutes. The tank job in Dallas was very noticable to me late in the year when I watched them play Toronto. JJ Barea was killing them all game but he didnt get minutes in the 4th.

I love Dirk and his knowledge is very valuable but Nowitzki really should retire. Watching him run up and down the court makes me cringe the same way nails on a chalkboard do. His touch will never go away so he will always produce offensively but his off the ball movement is slow and his high post iso game does not to relate to todays offensive schemes. Defensively he is non existent despite his effort and the Mavs need a leader who can lead by example.I also think his presence is part of the reason Harrison Barnes is not taking the next step in his development.

Barnes productivity was almost completly identical to last years numbers on a less competitive team. He is still only 25 but as a 6 year vet being paid $25 Mil a year you would expect he shows improvement. He just hasnt developed that alpha instinct that the best wings in the league have. At this point he seem to be comfortable being a decent 3rd option on a contender.

So those are my thoughts, the questions that I cant awnser are…

    Is Dirk retiring?

    Is Barnes being shopped?

Is Motley resigned or being resigned? I think they should. How high are they on Motley?

Who are they looking to draft? Probably BPA but 3-7 on my big board is very close with Ayton and Doncic being 1st and 2nd which could make positional need a priority especially based on my previous 3 questions because if Nowitzki is gonna play another 20 minutes per game next year and they are as high on Motley as I am then that means Bagley is probably not as high as Bamba/Jackson Jr. on their list due to defensive potential.

Bagley, Bamba and Jackson all make sense here. (Obviously Ayton if you luck out and get #1)

Dirk is old, Motley is a good role player and who knows what Noel will end up signing for and where he will be signing. Young front court player to build around would be useful.

Barnes is locked into the 3 for the next 2 years. I don’t see anyone taking that contract, so I’m not sure I would take Porter top 5 considering his stock and team fit. However, I love Porter for my Bulls at 6.

This team will have so much cap availible when Matthews and Barnes’ deals come off the books.

Hoping for Porter to fall to us too…

      1. Porter

      2. Wendell Carter

      3. Mo Bamba

Dallas should run to the podium if Marvin Bagley is still there when they pick, he’s a perfect fit with the Mavs.

They have a bunch of solid, youngish bench pieces (Powell, Mcdermott, Yogi, DFS) and vets that are rotting during the rebuild (Barea, Curry) that they can hopefully consolidate (with the 35th or future picks). Wes Matthews needs to go too

I really want to see Doncic in a Mavs uniform, but they will need to leap frog Memphis as they the only other team I see out of Phoenix, Atlanta, Dallas, Memphis & Orlando in the top 5 that wont go big in my opinion.

If Dennis Smith is the next Westbrook they need to take Porter Jr to be his Durant…

-Dirk already confirmed he isn’t retiring, he is the leader of the team currently and the most important vet presence along Barea, we need him one extra year. He breaks Kobe record for number of season with one team and add some points/games to his record and will retire in 2019

-HB is a stop gap for this club, not a long term piece. You need someone to get fans excited and get some points etc and that for now is Barnes. But he isn’t even a good second option in top 4 conference team IMHO.

-The pick is very important for the Mavs, if they get their franchise player from it (even with top 5 pick odds are still we won’t) it will be huge leap for the franchise. I am not DSJ biggest fan unfortunately and don’t think he will be super star, that is why the pick is important for me.

As it stands now there is no sure thing in this draft IMHO, but with Doncic/Bagley/Ayton you have massive talents. Like them in that order in terms of fit with Rick Carlisle game. In terms of talent there is a lot of question marks around every single one of them despite the obvious talent there.

If we are picking 4 or 5th I think it will depend on workouts. MP/Young and Bamba are all in play for me and hope Mavs will get them all in workouts. MP is a bit of mystery with his injury and whether the medical team will red flag him or not but he is the closest to those top 3 in terms of talent, may be even better

Bamba is a defensive big, but is he worth it at top 5 when you don’t have enough offense?

Young is very underrated IMHO, I think there is very good chance he might end best player from the drat when it is all said and done, but do we take him just like Sixers kept getting Cs? or Wolves getting 2 PG in one draft? RC plays with 2 PGs a lot of time but can he develop both?

PS: JJJ is another option I forget about, he is for me the one with "high risk/high reward’ type of player, not sure that would fit with the Mavs

Now Im interested to hear your opinion on DSJ. I must admit I didnt get to watch many Mavs games but watched alot of his highlights (not enough of his lowlights).

I hope the Mavs get Doncic he really needs to go to a good situation. Seems like a match made in heaven.

I feel JJJ is a very safe pick. Hes proven as a defensive playmaker that can shoot the 3 offensively at the very least. Serge Ibaka worst case scenerio.
