Mavs looking to shop lottery pick
Just seen across ESPN bottom line that they are looking to shop the pick to free up cap space to target Dwight.
Cavs 19 31 and 33, and eat some salary if necessary
I don't think Dallas would want the 19th pick if the want to free up salary. All first round picks get guaranteed contracts and the salary diff can't be that much between 13 and 19. Of course they could take a stash guy with 19 but if they wanted that why wouldn't they take one at 13 and guarantee the get the Euro they want.
Lakers are looking to move up in the draft. Trade Jordan Hill or Jodie Meek for the the lottery pick. Then Lakers Sign Dwight Howard and the Mavs get screwed again.
Dwight Howard by himself might not be enough but if they could also get Chris Paul, then a Dirk, CP3, D Ho trio would be pretty nice. All they would need would be some extra shooters with Shawn Marion and Jae Crowder being the obligatory glue guys/energy players.
Those five players would cover pretty much everything plus they have Bernard James as a reserve center from last year's draft and Jared Cunningham at backup point.
I think that would be the best scenario for Dallas as well as for Chris Paul and Dwight Howard.
I saw this earlier too, and was thinking this is a way for another team to possibly get a lotto pick for cheap. Dallas will be looking for "future" picks in return. They do not want the $1.35 million cap hold, or any other salary from this year's draft. They'll be looking for future picks and/or overseas contracts in return.
Just off the top of my head:
PHX- has a lot of future Lakers picks, maybe can offer a few for Dallas' lotto pick.
Chicago- I honestly do not know much about Mirotic, but he has a lot of buzz. Maybe they offer him to Dallas for #13. Target Caldwell-Pope and provide Rose the perfect backcourt mate.
Mirotic is worth way more than the #13 pick in this weak draft.
He just won MVP in the best league in the best domestic league in the world outside of the NBA at the age of 22.
If he was in this draft he'd be right around the top.
Dallas isn't taking back salary or it defeats the purpose.
2014 2nd Rounder (The better of the Sacremento and Toronto picks)
2015 2nd Rounder (Raptors)
Draft Rights to Tomislav Zubic
Maverick's 13th Overall Pick
Also, I don't think Chicago would trade Mirotic. They traded a first and a second rounder plus cash just to stash him, and he'll be in the NBA sooner rather than later.
The salary that would need to be moved is Marion. $9.3 million for him at this point is a bit much, and one has to wonder how much is a late lottery pick in this draft worth? A team would have to really like a guy. The best bets is Toronto giving Kyle Lowry and John Lucas III to Dallas. The Mavs absorb the $1 million buyout for Lowry and decline the option on Lucas. The Raptors then can draft a point guard that is at very least lower maintenance. It would be an up front financial hit for the Raptors, even if they buyout Marion and amnesty Kleiza to get under the tax line, but the move would save them in years 2-4 if they get the right point. If you really wanted to get cute with the trade idea, they could reroute Bargnani and Marion to the Lakers for Pau.
It would be a good move if they wanted to start a rebuild. Honestly, though, I assumed Marion wouldn't be a part of the deal, as I can't think of many teams willing or able to take on that much salary. Sure, they are teams like Houston that have big cap space, but I doubt they would want to hinder their chances of signing a big name free agent this summer. For this reason, Dallas could just settle for stockpiling future draft picks and draft rights in exchange for the pick.
I don't see Paul leaving LA. He just got Del Negro fired and should be able to hand pick his next coach if he desires. He has good young talent around him and will be in a contending situation the remainder of his 5 year contract.
As for Dwight Howard I can see him leaving LA. It all seemed like a bit much for him too handle this year. He wasn't 100 % healthy but was still one of the best centers in the game without a doubt. He will clearly draw the most interest around the league. I can see Houston and Dallas fighting over him in the end. Houston has a young star in James Harden to take the pressure off Dwight where Dallas has the former MVP Dirk but he is approaching the end of his career. If Dallas can't sell Dwight on bringing in other young talent like when they whiffed on Deron Williams I don't know if he will want to go there in fear of ending up in the Orlando of Texas.
Dallas has to start over they have almost nobody under contract. Mark Cuban has a reputation of treating his players right so it could be an appealing place to play. I think Josh Smith has a good chance to end up there and play along side Dirk causing mega mismatches up front.
If Dallas wants to rid themselves of Marion's contract, Atl can take #13 along with Marion. Marion can man the sf spot for the year and add a lotto pick. I think they are looking towards the future if they don't think they can bring in both Paul and Howard.
Atlanta would make sense as they need a SF and by the looks of things are not going to give Josh Smith a big contract.
Just a question though, why would they shop this pick just to save a million of so in salary ? A 13th pick wouldn't cost that much and there is a good chance he could play better than what that salary is worth. Just looking at last years rookie contracts - Rivers and J Lamb got $4 mill for 2 years and Zeller got $3 mill for 2 yrs. Moe harless got $3.5 mill for 2 yrs. Tobias Harris was earning $1.5mill on his rookie contract.
As a Dallas fan I dont want Dwight.. With him alone(People who think CP3 is coming to us are retarded) we would be a fringe playoff team during his tenure, I'd rather us pick up a guy like McCollum or Shroeder if they fall that far, and then have one more down season for a good pick in next years stacked class.
I also think Dwight to Dallas is a bad idea, as he alone will not make them contenders. But as long as Dallas is willing to move the pick, someone might jump on it. Another possible deal is the Chicago one I mentioned above, but instead of Mirotic, they can give Dallas the Bobcats pick they own. Mirotic should be over after next season, and Im guessing he can play pf?? This year they can take Pope at 13.
