A while back I posted something about how I thought Maryland could be a real sleeper in the ACC and perhaps contend for an ACC title.  Boy was I wrong.  The Terps sit at 7-5 after a head-scratching home loss to Boston University.  They’ve played a pretty tough non-conference schedule losing a clone one to Uconn 78-77 and getting blown out at Ohio State 76-60 in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.  Losses to Oregon State with Obama in attendance, GW and BU are puzzling.  Mark Turgeon has talent in Dez Wells, Jake Layman, Nick Faust, Shaq Cleare and Charles Mitchell.  I know Seth Allen has been out with a broken foot moving Dez Wells out of position to run the point. I I think Turgeon has done a solid job thus far replacing Gary Williams, especially on the recruiting trail, but with no NCAA tournament bids to speak of and a rough start to the season, Turgeon’s seat could begin to warm as ACC play nears.

Mark Turgeon can recruit but can’t win…I’d rather have a guy that wins with 2 and 3 star players…He’s had a chance to prove what he (evidently CANT) do, I think Maryland is a more respectable program than what Turgeon has turned them into

As a current Maryland student, I can attest to the fact that our basketball team sucks this year. However, this is not a reflection on talent. Dez Wells has the potential to be a scoring tour-de-force in college, while Jake Layman has near elite shooting and pretty good athleticism for a white guy. The rest of the team is also relatively good compared to the current level of play. The problem is Turgeon. As a coach who prides himself on stingy defense, Maryland might be one of the worst defensive teams in the NCAA. In the Oregon State home loss, we were down by 5 for the last 5 minutes. We scored on almost every possesion, but could literally not stop their guards from simple layups and quick rebound lay ins. This was reflected by the dual 25 point games from their starting backcourt. Although we do have a very good class coming in next year, it will be reared fruitless if Turgeon continues to "coach" them. Just ask Calipari, great recruits mean nothing if you can’t properly teach them. At Maryland, the problem is not talent. There is plenty there. The issue is Mark Turgeon, who repeatedly shows that he has no idea what to do with this team. Take us out of our misery, and fire him. Remember, we had a top 5 pick last year, along with the rest of the talent, and still did not even make the NCAA tournament.

Turgeon needs to plant Nick Faust and his 33% from the field on the the end of the bench. He has talent, but hoists up some absolutely ridiculous shots game after game. Freshman Roddy Peters should be playing more minutes than Faust and will eventually turn in to one of the ACC’s best guards in the coming seasons. Maryland has two recruits coming in in Melo Trimble and Dion Wiley who are both better than Faust and should help out next season.

If they don’t have a "good" year next season, then that might be the time to panic because they will have all the necessary talent. They have no graduating seniors and should hope that Dez Wells doesn’t make the mistake of declaring early. Their entire team will basically be filled with four-star recruits (10! if I’m not mistaken according to Rivals)
