2011 NBA Mock Draft Looks Different After Marshon Brooks Owns Alec Burks In Front Of Milwaukee Bucks

Marshon Brooks reportedly dominated Alec Burks one-one-one today in front of the Milwaukee Bucks.  According to sources "it wasn’t even close."  Brooks even threw down a dunk on Burks.

It’s a shame it took NBA scouts so long to realize how talented this guy was.  When Brooks did well at the NBA Combine, scouts told him they hadn’t even checked him out until just before the workout, but they were impressed

His stock has been on the rise since the beginning of the offseason and it will only get higher now.

There isn’t much not to like about Brooks.

In his senior year he put up 24.6 points and seven boards a game while averaging 34 percent from downtown.  He has great size at the two-guard at 6’5" with a 7’1" wingspan.

He put up  52 on Notre Dame this season, a Big East single-game scoring record.

Maybe what is most to like about Brooks is his work ethic.  If you just look at how he’s improved as a scorer each season at Providence, you could argue there isn’t a harder worker in the entire draft.

I just wrote an article today on who will be taken first between two-guards Alec Burks and Klay Thompson.  Well, as of now, Marshon Brooks looks like the clear favorite.

I still like Burks the best amongst all the other SG in this draft. If you watch game film, you can see his explosiveness, quickness, and playmaking ability is second to none amongst the top SG in this class. I don’t put too much stock on one on one workouts, I care more about the 5 on 5 drills and how the player plays with his team mates and against a defense.

One of the reason why Kemba refused to workout one on one against Jimmer is because Kemba is more effective on 5 on 5 drills where his PG skills are on showcase, while Jimmer is a superb one on one player and a better scorer.

Hold on what did you just say Kemba is better in a 5 on 5 setting so he can display his ability to set up his teamates?  That is bull and you know it because Kemba was one of the best one on one scorers in college basketball last year.   Jimmer is bigger, stronger, and a fooled everybody with his deceiving lateral quickness at the combine and Kemba was just making excuses.

And I’ve been a big fan of Alec Burks since last year but facts are facts and Marshon Brooks beats Burks in any head to head matchup you want to put them in.  Brooks is longer, faster, and more explosive.  Brooks has better ball handling skills at this point and a better shooting touch.  The only reason Burks should get drafted ahead of Brooks is based soley on potential but after the combine I’m not sure who really has the most potential out of the two.  Brooks combine numbers resemble D. Wade the most with his 7’1 wingspan, 39" vert, 34" standing vert, and his blazing lane agility and 3/4’s sprints.  Combine that with his already lethal repetoire on offense and Brooks is looking more and more like a legitimate top ten pick.  I see no reason why he shouldn’t be in the running for the Bobcats 9th pick instead of their 19th pick.

Jimmer is a better scorer than Kemba, but Kemba has the better PG skills and PG skills are displayed on 5 on 5 drills. So your telling me Jimmer has better PG skills than Kemba? I beg to differ.

The NBA isn’t about head-to-head. Who cares?  Deron has historically dominated Chris Paul, while Paul gets more out of less and is a more effective, efficient and better player.  (not a knock on Deron, who’s great; there’s no shame in not being as good as Paul).  Burks, with slashing and better passing, does more to help a team than Brooks, who has atrocious shot selection.  Also note how many mediocre shooters become good in the NBA and Burks athleticism advantage and it’s actually reasonably hard to argue Brooks is a better prospect, even though he isn’t shabby in his own right.

I’m glad he’s dominating and finally getting some attention, I’ve always thought this guy could really play and can bring something to an NBA team.  The only thing that makes me sad about his stock rising is that the Twolves won’t have a shot at him at 20 any more which I was really hoping for because I thought he made a lot of sense for our team.

Classic case of people thinking workouts determines who’s a better player. 1-on-1 basketball games aren’t played in the NBA as much as 5-on-5 basketball is. Burks and Brooks both have talent as scorers, but Burks plays more of a team-oriented game as opposed to Brooks who shoots seemingly every time he sees the ball, and thus he has a much greater chance at a better career if he can get a better jump shot. I don’t see anything in an actual game Brooks does better than Burks besides shoot. Burks isn’t the best defender at all, but Brooks and his team never even tried in any of his years at Providence.

Also, it wasn’t a matter of him improving more than any player in the draft. He’s improved in some areas, but it was mostly the graduation/dismissal of some prolific players, and Providences style of play that were responsible for him upping his scoring. He’s always been a scorer who likes to hunt his own shot.
