hbomb3300ParticipantPope is a big time sleeper prospect. Chad Ford is very high on him, and I can see why. He’s just starting to get back to full strength after losing his junior and senior year of high school to injuries. Chad Ford quoted a GM today in an article:
Here’s what one general manager told me on Tuesday as I was prepping for the article: "If he were in the draft, I’m not sure you could pass on him once you move out of the lottery. He’s not the same player, but he’s got Antetokounmpo-type raw talent. On sheer raw capability, he’s one of the five or six most talented guys in the draft. I guess the question is, given all the injuries and setbacks, how high are you willing to gamble on him?"
I’m hoping he will burst onto the scene once he gets more playing time. There is a major drop off in talent after the lottery in this draft so if Pope continues to show serious potential I would be all for taking a high risk/high reward player.

JoeWolf1I think it’s a classic example of Ford over reacting to what one scout told him.
Pope has potential, and this year’s class outside of the top 20 is weak enough that someone could potentially roll the dice on upside without much consience, but I think his injury history is a concern, as is how far away he is from being able to contribute at the NBA level. You wrap him up for a 3 year rookie deal, and he might not even be ready to give you minutes before his contract is up. He’d really benefit from coming back at least one more season.

IhateusernamesParticipantIf he can get picked on raw potential he should go if hes a 1st rounder. I always say take the money.
Personally Id like to see him produce big number next year at San Diego St.

JoeWolf1IF is the question, though. He’s been top 30 on 1 ESPN big board for 1 day.
It’s not like Ford is the rule among NBA scouts, or that his same source will be high enough on him to influence his team to pick him.

Magic JordanParticipantIt doesn’t really matter what Ford says, the fact is he is a young, 6’10" forward with ridiculous athletic ability, decent dribbles and a decent jump shot. I think what is being said is he is a first rounder off his profile and potential alone. Much like Giannis.

DukeDaSquadParticipantI was wondering what happenned to him after seeing some high school mixtapes that compared him to durant. I remember reading something that said he was going juco because of his grades or something like that. based on his high school highlights he has alot of offensive potential which was sort of showcased in the colorado state game where he scored 22. looks to have bulked up alot since high school despite being listed at 205 on the espn website

TopShottaParticipantHe has a ton of talent but he would prob be best served to play one more of college ball. It would be hard to turn down the money if someone gave him a mid 1st round guarantee. I figure a team can put him in the D-league, watch his developement, and just take it from there…

r377ParticipantI lost all respect for Chad Ford as soon as he said "Dion Waiters would be a slightly better version of Monta Ellis".
How can a guy averaging just 4ppg be considered a draft prospect ? I understand his minutes are increasing but I still think he would be better off with another season or two under his belt….

ph90702It’s not all about production. If it was, then Tyler Haws would be a lottery pick.

SgtMcSquigglesParticipantYou have to have some amount of production though. It’s possible for guys with mediocre to decent production to be successful, but has there ever been a good nba player that averaged under 13 mpg in college?

r377ParticipantCan you please give me a list of NBA players who have averaged 4ppg in college, before declaring for the draft and having a successful NBA career ?

SgtMcSquigglesParticipantIn the quick search that I just went on the lowest ppg I could find was Zach Lavine with 9.4 ppg, but he isn’t good

hbomb3300ParticipantLike I stated in my original post, he is coming off 2 serious injuries in high school so his college coach is bringing him along very slowly. The 1st round projections are based on him continuing to progress, getting to full strength, and showing his full potential the rest of the season.

cabbycabParticipantI live in the area and get to watch all the Aztec games. Pope definately has a NBA body ( Durant clone ) and talent. His numbers are nothing to write home about because first few games of the season he was so rusty from not playing ball for a few years. He literally looked like he hadn’t played at all in a while. He was airballing shots left and right. As he has picked up his wind and gotten more minutes, you can see that he is a baller. He is just a freak show with his lanky body and shooting and ball handling. He obviously needs to get better but the foundation is there.

r377ParticipantHow is Malik Pope’s draft stock these days ?
Just another overhyped high school kid who didn’t make it….

BallerScriptParticipantI think he goes undrafted and is picked up in the G-League.

BeastMode716Participantfor about 3 years now – maybe more. And he absolutely has crazy length & athleticism at 6’10”
But Pope suffered a horrific injury in High School – I believe he broke Both his legs.
You just Never know how a guy’s body responds to a serious injury. Sometimes he can come back better than ever b/c he’s so young but then other times the player is just never the same.
Personally I am rooting for the guy. It’s taken him a very long time to get healthy & hopefully he can put it all together. But Ford is def not reaching here. At one time Pope was a Major prospect.
