    Hey, guys.

Since right now is the time everybody makes their mock drafts, I was wondering how you do it, more specifically:

    1) Do you choose who the teams SHOULD take in your opinion, or try to guess who the teams WILL take?

I personally don’t try to get into GMs heads and just choose guys I think would be best for the team, just because it is more interesting for me that way. If a guy I had high falls and later becomes a good player, I can imagine I was smarter than NBA GMs.

    2) Do you try to guess draft day trades?

Trades are what screws the mock drafts most and are hardest to anticipate, so do you try to guess them or just make your mocks the way the draft order is right now?

Just thought it could be fun to share how exactly you guys approach your mock drafts.

Great question. I personally make mocks on who I think teams WILL take which is more challenging and fun to me. I read all kinds of reports and rumors on free agency and draft prospects and try to anticipate draft day trades and then who will be picked where. I’m kinda crazy/obsessive when it comes to the draft for some reason.

". I’m kinda crazy/obsessive when it comes to the draft for some reason." That’s kinda why we all came here in the first place

I also try to get inside the GM’s mind and pick who I think they will pick. I look at past draft’s see what kinds of players they drafted. I also look at team needs, as well how a certain draft prospect will mold with other players of the same team the draft prospect would be going to. I don’t worry about trades unless there is a lot of info and its kind of obvious something will happen. Trades are hard to predict, and I remember one year my draft was totally messed because I thought trades would happen that never did. So I now just do the mock the way the draft order is and then add in trades when necessary.

Right or wrong I listen to guys like Chad Ford and see what’s trending.  GM’s spin and lie about who they want, that makes it tough to figure out.  You can look at who they bring in for work-outs, to get an idea of who they like, but sometimes teams pick guys they never worked out.  You can look at team needs, but Sactown picked Stauskas a year after picking McLemore, and they passed up PF’s when they needed one.  Trades "F" the whole thing up, so it’s a bit of guessing game.  I just have fun with it, and don’t worry how well I do.

Last year I didn’t make a mock draft until the final day before the draft and this year I plan to do the same. For the 1st round I speculate what I think the GM’s will do, and for the 2nd I just place players who are projected to go in that range on teams. In years past in the 2nd round I thought of team needs etc. But that’s almost pointless because of the trades and teams just pick players highest on thier big board so I would have no idea.

I always try to include a good amount of international guys in the 2nd round.

Past two years I have gotten like top 10 both years in my mock, so I guess I’m lucky or I’m doing something right.

    1. BPA – Put in the best player available in order for each team. When you reach a point where talent seems to plateau, move onto point 2.

    2. Where there is a ‘tier’ of players all around the same ability, then look for team need and fit.

    3. Don’t worry about trades, they will mess it up for everyone, you’re not alone. Besides, if you get it wrong, then you’ve messed yourself up.

    4. Have fun with it.

This is what I do. Others may do it differently, there is no right or wrong way. Just enjoy it – makes watching the draft a bit more enjoyable (if that is even possible)!

I think I make the pick that makes the most sense. So more like the pick I feel is good. Because it’s hard to guess what the teams will do,even if it’s kinda fun.

I like to make a mock according to where I think players should be taken, not where I think they’ll actually get taken. That way years later, when I find out I’m right about a player, I have bragging rights for ranking him ahead of where he actually went. If the player I said would go high never even makes it into the league, I just don’t bring it up and hope no one notices.
