What is his position in the NBA? I saw where someone compared him to a taller james harden and i couldnt agree more. He is a very good passer and shooter but will he be considered a "Point Guard"

I have seen him play a lot in Europe.

    1. He is not the next Lebron.

2.He is not the next taller Harden.

    3. He is not the next Turkoglu.

    4. He is not the next Kidd.

    5. I dont like comparisons to just one player.

    6. Sometimes stats dont lie. Dirk Nowitzki, Kristaps Porzingis, Dennis Schroeder, Dario Saric, Timothe Luwawu Cabarrot, Hernangomez, Ivica Zubac filled the Box scores at the age of 18. Hezonja, Bender, Hartenstein, Caboclo, Seraphin sat on the bench for the most of the games at the age of 18.

    7. There are definitely exeptions: Antetokounmpo low score, Karasev great stats.

    8. Doncic has got a unique skill set.

Doncic is a versatile wing. He runs sreens or create for himself or for others. Great assist turnover ratio, some steals , some blocks, a lot of rebounds, free throw looks very good for his age. It is to eary to predict his ceiling. If healthy he could be in the mix for a the top pick in 2018.

    9. Position: SF or SG, Point Forward when PG sits.

Luka Doncic is so hard to project, he has to be one of the best players at his age ever, but he is so well-rounded, skilled, tall, strong and smart that it is hard to see which part of his game can make a big jump. He has just turned 18 so realistically any part of his game can.

I guess the same could have been said about Nowitzki before the draft, and he turned out fine.

P.S. I hate not being able to edit my posts.

good points.  He really is about impressive of a prospect as you’ll find when it comes to skill and having a well rounded game. I’m gonna get negged to hell but I can see a mix of Chris Mullins and Terry Porter. He reminds me of Chris Mullins physically but he might be a superior athlete. Their savvy and feel for the game remind of eachother.  I see some Terry Porter in his game as well, but his size brings more dynamics to the table.  He’s a pg in the same mold as porter, relying on size, pace, angles and IQ to orchestrate an offense and both are very poised.

I’m sure there’s a better comparison but off the top of my head, I believe the comparisons I’ve made are valid. Not saying they’re the best.  Marques Johnson, Magic, Lebron etc are even worse comparisons imo though.

It’s going to be very interesting to see where Luka takes his next step developmentally. He really is so well rounded that it is tough to project. I’ve noticed his physical development has taken off, as expected, in the last year, which could spell an increase in athleticism, hopefully explosiveness. That’d be great, but I don’t think his future success is contingent upon it.  Hopefully he continues to add range and consistency to his jumper both off the catch and pull up. If he can do that and get a slightly quicker first step, the sky will be the limit. It may already be…..

The thing that stands out for me about Doncic is his understanding and reading of the game. He may not be a highlight reel athletic type but he makes up for that with an already excellent basketball IQ. Add to that his impressive build and size for his position and we could have a very good player.

He isn’t easy to find a good comparison for, Gallinari might be a lower to mid range type but I think Doncic has a better all round game at a similar age. Chris Mullin as suggested by Purp-n-Yellow above is a fair good to upside comparison for him too. Best case scenario might be he could be one of the next great point forwards almost in a Grant Hill mould but their skillsets don’t really compare for me.

The biggest selling point for me about Doncic is his BB IQ as with that he can potentially have a very long career as he won’t need to rely so much on his physical abilities.

I’m not there yet, but am definitely entertaining the idea.  He’s one of my favorite prospects to come around in quite some time.  When I say Chris Mullins/Terry Porter as comparisons, I’m not talking about production, just style of play with porter and size/physicallity with Mullins (and feel for the game, court savvy and tenacity).  Him and Mullins move around similarly as well, both are always engaged and always put themselves in advantageous places. But Doncic plays point alot and does alot of the same things Porter did as well.  I can also see some Joe Dumars in his game but theres truly no GOOD comparison, just alot of players who he is reminiscent of at any given time. He’s just so cerebral that he can show shades of a half dozen players in any given game if needed to do so.

If Rudy Fernandez can have marginal success in the NBA, then I am supremely confident that Doncic will too, at the very very least.  I think his ceiling is almost as high as anyone and his floor is significantly higher than most as well. I think he’s going to be a franchise changing talent and could very well be the best euro prospect ever… Sabonis, Petrovic and Schmidt might have something to say about that but I believe they would all be very big fans

How about Joe Johnson as a comparison for Doncic?  I admit I haven’t seen him play except for short YouTube clips but I see some obvious similarities.  They’re both about the same size height and weight (JJ is slightly bigger, but Luka isn’t even done growing).  They also share the traits of a combo gaurd with the size and strength to play the 3.  That versatily usually is mentioned in regards to defense.  I hear the phrase "can gaurd multiple positions" quite often in scouting reports.  It’s less common for a player to be able to excel offensively at the 1, 2, and 3, in my opinion at least.

Johnson and Doncic both have tight handles and good court vision that allows them to play pg and distribute effectively.  However, they are both scorers at heart and share the ability to finish at the hoop and light it up from deep.  Defensively they do not stand out, but they are not liabilities either.  Let me know what you guys think?  I think Luka Doncic could be a very special player, definitely better than JJ.  It just seems like a good comp.

I can see that comparison with their physicality and athleticism but think Doncic is a much better team player.  He’s a true floor general even when he’s playing off the ball. I’ve only seen a couple of his games in their entirety but was completely impressed. Joe Johnson drifts and ball watches when he’s off the ball, but Doncic is perpetually engaged and putting himself in positions that help his team. But when he has the ball in his hands in the iso and his team just needs a bucket, Doncic shows some shades of Iso-Jo.

All in all, he makes prospect Joe johnson look raw and underdeveloped….

Doncic’s two best attributes are his shooting and passing ability, but I don’t think he can play PG in the NBA he could play as a point forward though.  He just doesn’t have the explosiveness to be a primary ball handler.  I think his game most resembles Gordon Hayward although I think he should be slightly better than Hayward because he is a better passer and defender,

I like the Hayward comparison quite a bit too.  To me Luka seems like a better natural athlete (again based only on a few YouTube clips I have seen).  It’s possible that his competition makes him appear more explosive than he really is.  I remember Sasha Vujicic looking like a Euro Jesus Shuttlesworth in a summer league game years ago.

My prediction is Luka turns out to be a better athlete than Gordon Hayward.  He looks closer to a Ginobli type athlete: Quick, but not an above the rim guy, at least not on a regular basis.  Very agile, can change directions, and get to the hoop no problem.  Capable defender most of the time, but not his strength. I also think he will improve quite a bit as an athlete.  Much like Gordon Hayward, Doncic will benefit greatly from NBA strength and conditioning.

My scouting report on Luka is clearly a work in progress, but I think for now Gordon Hayward/Joe Johnson gives a pretty good description of his outlook.  Small forward body with excellent guard skills.

A Hayward/Johnson comparison works well for me too, Joe was putting up around 6apg at his peak, so we maybe don’t give him the credit for being such a good creative player as well as a scorer as we should. If Doncic can become a 20 plus ppg player combined with his good creative game and superior basketball IQ then he could be a top level player for many years.

He also has the potential to be a good defender, maybe not say in the Jimmy Butler level but if he has a good understanding of the game then he’ll naturally be a good defender as he’ll know how to position himself and try to negate superior athletes.
