I feel like players that have so much talent, athletic ability, and physical gifts have been bust or not live up to their potential mostly due to the fact that they have a low basketball iq. The player might be a 6’3" 197 pound point guard that can handle the ball, shoot the ball, finish, and have a 40+" vertical. That person looks the part and have the skill set that suppose to make him a star in this league, but he have low IQ that’ll make him a massive bust.

Look at J.R. Smith for example. He measured in at 6’7" 227 pounds with a 6’10" wingspan at the NBA combine and he’s super athletic. J.R also have a great skill set that includes the ability to make the three point jump shot, mid range jump shot, and the abiltity to finish in the paint. With all of that you would expect him to be Kobe Bryant or someone great with all that in his package, but he does not have the IQ of Kobe. I’m not saying J.R. Smith is a bust, but im saying he could’ve been more than what he is now.

You can look at recent bust that have great physical tool, athletic tools, and skill set but didn’t live up to the hype and you will see a common denominator, low IQ. Look at the likes of Michael Beasley amoung players.

I feel like this is lavine’s biggest problem. He has so much skill and athletic ability but he  looks like he doesn’t know what he’s doing most of the time. Being from Minnesota I really hope I am wrong and that he works out though.

Zach will be fine. It’s a simple game, as long as he sticks to a limited number of go-to moves.

Avery Bradley is somewhat similar. He could get to the rim any time but he just doesn’t have the handles and quick reaction times.

LaVine just needs to get minutes at SG, though any minutes are good.

Dion Waiters for me. Watching him play with the Cavs was awful. I actually thought coming into the league he had a higher IQ then was the case.

He just took so many bad shots early in the shotclock, gamble on D and just demand the ball in awful positions on the court.

I’ll never forgot when after a full time out, Scott drew up a play and the ball was inbounded to Waiters and he jacked up a deep 3 at the top of the ark with 22 seconds to go in the shotclock. Firstly thing he did was call another timeout and drag him off the court.

While bball IQ definitely played a factor, I think Michael Beasley’s biggest problems were poor work ethic and lack of maturity.

In Beasley’s case the word basketball is not required in the term "low basketball IQ. He just suffers from not being smart.

I’ve said for years that the only things that separated jr Smith from Kobe or Vince Carter were work ethic and bball iq. As far as natural athletic ability and talent, Smith is on par with either of them and probably could have been as good or at least close to as good were he wired differently.

I think a common denominator with a lot of these " low iq" guys is that they don’t really have the love for the game that most players in the league do. They play because they are naturally gifted and have been pushed into basketball because they were most like likely told that could make a lot of money. They don’t put the work in that other players at the highest level do because they can get away with doing less. However, as a result they don’t learn the little nuances of the game that most players pick up through years of playing and studying the game.

Kobe and Vince Carter shouldn’t be mentioned in the same sentence when it comes to work ethic.  Carter had more natural athletic ability, but it is Kobe’s work ethic that puts him in the discussion of top 10 of all time, whereas Carter is no where close to that list.  Keep in mind Carter openly admitted that he didn’t give 100% all of the time when he played in Toronto.

I agree. I was comparing natural athletic ability and pure talent. The difference between Kobe and Vince all came down to drive and competiveness to maximize their ability. I don’t think Vince was necessarily lazy but if he had kobe’s passion for the game and work ethic he probably could have been just as good. He still had a very good career anyway. When I look at jr smith, his work ethic was much less than either Kobe or Vince, so his career has gone the way it has. I don’t think there is that much difference in pure talent between the three though.

Vince didn’t give 100% in New Jersey either. Like JR Smith, he was enjoying the night life and sleeping through sunday afternoon games.

But he had more talent than JR Smith. Work ethic wise, it’s closer than you’d think.

Some guys can just hide a bad work ethic better.

I gotta go with Andrea Bargnani. Hoisted up a 3 with less than 10 seconds to go…when they were up.

    Possibly dumbest shot selection ever.

i dont think beasley has a low b ball iq nor a poor work ethic..his problem was he just didnt have the heart…

smh at the thought of putting jr smith in the same sentence as kobe or even vince carter…he isnt nearly as versatile as those guys… he only wants to jump up 3s and dunk…

Again I agree but your kind of missing the point. The reason he isn’t as versatile is because he never put in the work to expand his game beyond pull-up 3s and Dunks. Its all hypothetical, but if he had really studied the game and worked on his craft the way Kobe had, I don’t see any reason why he couldn’t have been just as versatile of a scoring threat.

To me not having heart is the same as not having a work ethic. The ability to push yourself, the passion for the game, the NEED to get better. That is what separates good players from the great ones.

Josh Smith has the lowest IQ I’ve ever soon. Doesn’t know when to shoot, dribble, or pass the ball. When all else fails he will jack up a 3.

Could call by the guys above on JR Smith and Josh Smith, neither know how to take good shots. Certainly both should be sat down and made to watch a best of Ray Allen or Steph Curry in how to take good 3 point shots.

I still think that this topic should be re-named in tribute to JaVale McGee

     Russell Westbrook?

    Uber talent and freakish athleticism.

He can OBVIOUSLY play the game.

    Has a killer instinct.

He checks off the rest of the list.

    Does he GET IT?

Will he EVER win a ring.

The guy was the best player in the league ever since he came off the bench in the All Star Game.

His Emotional IQ isn’t that high, but everything else is GREAT.

If he never puts his team over the top, and if he and KD can’t win a ring then you have to at least take a look at examining Russ’s Basketball IQ.
