I have been going back and forth between the 76ers and Magic, but I think the Orlando Magic will win the #1 pick in this year’s draft lottery. Who do you guys think will win the lottery and who do you think they will select?

Ever since the Joe Smith under-the-table contract the NBA has made sure to punish the Wolves in the lottery and there is ZERO chance they end up with the 1st overall pick.  I’m guessing the best they get is the 3rd pick.

Magic are a good call, they have drafted high but not got that superstar player yet. As a Phoenix fan I’d like us to get top pick but as a neutral I’d be happy with Magic or maybe Hornets who have never had a top pick.

      Shaq, Webber, and Dwight.

Let other teams draft franchise big men

For some reason I just think either the Kings or Lakers will win the lottery. Sac is one of those franchises that is drama filled right now, and winning the lottery could really put everything into perspective for them. Drafting a great player to play alongside Cousins in the post would be ideal, but also have some insurance incase he bolts.Having a young core of CAT, Boogie, McLemore, and Stauskas isn’t bad at all, and I’m sure Karl could put them in a position to be good.

I also think LA will win it, because it’s LA, and when it comes to sports I don’t believe in a "lottery". There is just too much money in these games for stuff like this not to make sense, and LA is where money talks the loudest. Lakers didn’t win it this year, but I feel like this is the year. It would all make too much sense too me.

People also need to remember that the team with the worst record typically isn’t the one who wins the #1 pick, so you can cross Minny off your list. I hope not though, I want Wiggins to have an incredible carrer, and another #1 would go a long way in that regard. Also I think it would be absolutely hilarious to have the last three #1 picks on the same team before their rookie contracts are even up.

Lakers and Knicks Top 3 picks. NBA is a business, the biggest markets and teams are struggling so NBA will give them top picks

I really don’t believe the lottery is rigged, but if you are going the conspiracy route, here are the top 5 possibles this year: Detroit, Denver, New York, Sacramento, and Orlando. If you actually look at past winners, it has very little to do with big vs. small markets, but rather struggling/new front offices after stars leave or shakeups in ownerships. That’s why L.A. would be out in a conspiracy simply because they don’t NEED the #1. Bryant’s jersey will be still sell top 5 next year regardless, you know? On the flip side of that coin is New York. They are a candidate not because it’s NY, but because they have actually been a mess for a LONG time, meaningless playoff appearances aside. Same with Denver and Orlando. The worst kept secret in the league is Sacramento losing a top 5 talent unless they become a playoff staple in the next 2 years, and their ownership is really trying to win, so you could reward that effort. Detroit is another franchise that is trying, but needs a superstar to get them over the hump.

I go back and forth on the whole conspiracy thing. It seems a bit preposterous for an organization to be rigged and last year the Celtics and Lakers didn’t move up so we got that going against us. The NBA is absolutely a rigged league. There’s been proof of it in other facets i.e reffing and collusion/tampering. If they wanted to escape the "rigged" notion, they would just have the ping pong thing out in front for people to see. I’ve never heard an explanation for why they won’t do that.

Anywho, I’ll go with Philly. I think all the talk about them tanking gets even more juicy if they win the lottery and get the top pick. Oh the league would be soooo pissed it would be great.

The league hates Minny, no way they get the top pick. I’d hedge it at like a 5% chance they get #1, 30% chacne #2 55% chance for #3 and 10% for #4

Assuming the NBA is in fact just picking the top 3 teams, here’s how I think it will go down.

I think the Knicks will win. KAT – who is very quickly becoming an almost unanimous #1 pick – grew up in nearby New Jersey and his friendship with Carmelo Anthony is well documented.  From a marketing standpoint, the Knicks – one the NBA’s most notable names – has been bad for too long and if the league is going to tamper in the lottery, it will be to help New York return to relevancy.

Also the 76ers will fall out of the top 3, simply to slap them in the face for actively trying to get a high pick. Then I’d say the Wolves pick at 2 and the Lakers pick at 3, simply because that’s the most statistically likely and the NBA don’t want to give fans too much to complain able.

I actually believe the lottery is rigged, but not every year. Wolves, Knicks, Lakers, 76ers… all have good chances at landing the 1st pick. I believe those teams will have the first 4 picks in no particular order.

Oooo good call on the Towns thing being from New Jersey and the relationship with Melo. I’m officially buying that one. Damn the stupid Knicks are gonna get the #1 pick.

Wow, the Joe Smith under the table thing happened 16 years ago. How long do the Timberwolves have to be punished?
The NBA lottery is a joke around the sports world. It’s the only major sport that doesn’t give the teams with the worst record the first pick and so on.

Does it prevent tanking? Look at the Sixer’s record the last 5 years.

Is it fair? Cleveland gets the first pick 3 years and MN never gets the first pick.

Is it a big TV draw? It’s going to be held on May 19th, in less your completely bored, who’s going to watch? When you can be outside playing ball or having fun with your friends. And then catch the lottery results on the 10 pm sports.

It’s time to scratch this train reck.

I don’t believe the lottery is rigged. I have a friend who works at Ernst and Young and I got an ugly look even mentioning that some people believe it’s rigged. Clearly that’s not facts, but I still don’t believe it’s rigged. I don’t think any part of the NBA is rigged although it’s clear their has been cheating largely based on refs who get themselves in trouble with powerful people.

I just don’t think people understand how the probabilites work all that great. I mean for the Wolves (or the worst team), the worst they can get is the 4th pick. That’s obvious. But statistically, their odds of getting the 2nd pick is 21.5%, and the 3rd pick is 17.8%. The most likely: 4th pick with a 35.7% chance.

Every year, every fan can make some case about why the hell one team will get the number 1 overall pick over others. Literally the speculation of how the lottery is rigged ALWAYS outshines the actual lottery.

Which is preposterous. The team with the worst record in the league has a 75% of NOT getting the top pick. The worst team. That’s beyond stupid. They have a higher percent chance of picking fourth.

I get probabilities…but how many years has there been a lottery? The worst team has gotten the top pick like twice. That’s not 25% of the time. So unless theres a run on worst teams getting the top pick, the sample size seems plenty big enough for me. History shows us the worst team almost never gets the pick and the NBA is the worst league in terms of competitive balance…correlation, I dont think so.
