Looking back from the 2001-2011 drafts, only the Portland Trailblazers have repeated back to back years in the top 3 (2006, 2007 with Aldrige and Oden.)

What is your explanation for this? Is it rigged as some would like to believe? Is it just luck? Or do you think that top 3 picks are so valuable that they lead their team to the playoffs, or a 10-14ish pick range where they usually won’t win a top 3 pick on lottery night?

Aldridge was drafted by the Bulls and then swapped for Tyrus Thomas who was the next pick. My explanation is that Portland was bad enough to get the 1 pick and when Oden had to miss the year they still were bad. Teams have had back to back years of good picks. Orlando had two 1st picks (Shaq and Webber) and the Nets (Coleman and Kenny ANderson) It doesnt happen often but it does happen

^ Made me think about a Shaq and Webber tandem. If they learned how to play off each other that would have been amazing. Maybe the best frontcourt duo ever.

yeah but they got Penny Hardaway in that deal for Webber. If no Penny then it would have remained Scott Skiles as the PG, who was limited athletically along with fat Dennis Scott at SF

In the actual lottery, like powerball, if you win the lottery once…you actually have a better chance of winning it a 2nd time than those who have never won.  It’s a different realm of lottery, but I just thought it was an interesting stat I’d share.
