Lotto StudParticipantThose who have or are scouting him, do you believe that he can develop some type of point guard skills for the next level?
I just envision him turning into a Chauncey Billups type of player if he can.

CoachWyersParticipantHe is a wing in my eyes that could play as a combo guard. He is a strong athletic slasher that knows how to score the ball in the mold of a OJ Mayo to me.

OhCanada-ParticipantIm no scout not by a long shot but watching him play he reminds me of Rodney Stuckey.

Lotto StudParticipantOne thing for sure, two for certain, is that he will have to relive this moment for the rest of his life of missing that free-throw. Darius Washington Jr. can relate.

True_JafiParticipantThis don’t compare to Darius Washington at all. Bad? yes but not same circumstances. Memphis was down 2 and Washington got fouled shooting a three with 0 seconds. Miami was up 1 and he missed a one n one but still had the opportunity to get a stop with the lead. Even if Lonnie make the free throws Loyola still had the opportunity to tie. Washington makes 3 they win. He makes 2 out of three its overtime

RUDEBOY-ParticipantI Like that OJ Mayo comparison. Brandon Roy is another 1 I like. His game is better suited for the pros. Mid Lottery pick.

Sewok15ParticipantMore Roy than Mayo…he has good playmaking ability just didn’t get to show it this year much.

Sewok15ParticipantI just wrote a whole paragraph on Lonnie but will elaborate here since I only saw this thread now.
My girl was Lonnie’s Spanish teacher in 9th grade and I have been watching him play since then. Not to say I have any supreme insight but I can say I am certainly a fan of his but also one of his bigger critics because I see the amazing amount of potential he has as a basketball player. The kid is already a great human being so I feel especially bad for his late game meltdown (if you want to be severe)….however I feel like this might actually be one of the best things for his future.
To answer the question ballhandling appeared to be one of his bigger weaknesses this season. His game will definitely translate to the NBA as a he is a great athlete and really good shooter with near perfect form that will only continue to improve. I do believe he does have the ballhandling skills to become a legit NBA PG but he might fit better as a Combo guard…or a PG on a team with another player that handles the ball alot.
I honestly think the main issues with Lonnie’s game (especially ballhandling) come from issues with his confidence. He is such a nice modest kid that sometimes it seems like he lacks that killer instict. I don’t believe he lacks it I just think it takes the right circumstances to come out. This year at Miami those circumstances did not occur. The main culprit was his meniscus tear prior to the season. Early on you could see he wasn’t himself phyiscally and then as the ACC season got going so did Lonnie.
I don’t know that he was every really himself mentally with the turmoil surrounding the program. Lykes took over as PG because Newton started the season pretty horrendously. As a shooting guard chemistry with your PG is almost as important for your scoring as it would be for a PF. Lykes dribbles quite a bit and Lonnie would get in the habbit of standing around watching and waiting.
Some of his best plays late in the season came on back door cuts as he was being denied the ball. He is getting better at becoming a threat to score when he doesn’t have the ball. He is still at his best with the ball in his hands.
I think the way they lost in the tourney will prompt Lonnie to return to school. He is already serious about educaiton and while staying 3 years for such a talent seems silly 2 years isn’t unheard of…Miles Bridges comes to mind recently as far as sure fire top 20 picks returning. If he comes backs fully healthy and confident he will be a force next year. I would hope his coach puts the ball in his hands more so he can develop as a playmaker because he has great passing instincts. If he reaches his full potential he will be a top 5 pick next summer and a 20 PPG scorer in the NBA at some point. I honestly see his ceiling as D-Wade with better range.

Mr. 19134ParticipantWalker doesn’t need to play PG in the pros because he’s big enough to play SG full time. He reminds me in many ways of Donovan Mitchells situation last year coming out of college. I’m obviously not saying he will have a Mitchell type impact nobody could predict that for any prospect, but physically and play style are similar.
And for the record I don’t think Mitchell will or should ever develop into a full time PG he should be used like Wade was.
