If a team has a late second round pick, who/what do you think that should they be looking to draft? Should they be going for a safe pick without much potential, ala Harangody/Zoubek, or should they try to swing for the fences and find someone who could either bust or become a seventh/eighth/ninth man in the rotation (as opposed to practice players, like Taylor Griffin or Josh Powell).

This is important for teams like the Suns, who only have two late second round picks and so are limited in how much they can improve via the draft. Should you go for the best player available (which is ostensibly difficult to tell by the second round), or a player that could fit a positional need (like a Scheyer to Indiana in the late second round, for example)?

I would take a chance in the late 2nd round if i am a team because most teams that own those picks were in the playoffs. My team is the Celtics and with there 2nd round pick I hope they try land someone who will have some upside such as Dexter Pittman or Charles Garcia. Why not try to add someone who can contribute and not ride the pine. Try pick up an 8th or 9th man whos good for some minutes.

I am a Mavs fan and I would really love seeing the Mavs using the pick for a player who can make it to the league and take the best available player
Wesley Matthews,Anthony Morrow,Sessions were either undrafted or late second round

With “almost” any 2nd rd pick I would select a Euro player. My reasoning is that only a handfull of 2nd rd picks make the team they were drafted by. A team drafting a Euro player can leave that player overseas to develope and continue to have that player as an asset with a limited affect on the salary cap. An American would need to be waived if they can not make the team or would most likely be sitting on the end of the bench with limited playing time to develope.

Of those guys you listed only Rondo and Deng would really help the Suns, and they were both part of prior arranged deals that suggest they weren’t interested in those players for anything other than as a trading chip. Fernandez is way over rated while Nate is only a situational player at best.

here just off top of my mind area few 2nd rounders who did well for themslevesand have been starters at some point in there careers.

    Michael Redd
    Gilbert Arenas
    Steve Blake
    Monte Ellis
Dejuan Blair- is early on him though
    Ryan Gomes
    Glen Davis
    Ramon Sessions.

Im sure if i looked could find many more.

I think each team has to do what they think is best player wise and sometimes salary cap wise, such as stashing people in europe.

More out of the top of my head:
    Marc Gasol
    Dennis Rodman
    Kelenna Azubuike (undrafted)
    Paul Millsap
    DeJuan Blair
Chase Budinger (too early, but I’m really high on him)

I think a guy like Andy Rautins would be a solid late 2nd round pick up because of his shooting ability and good size, Ben Uzoh would be another solid late 2nd round pick as would be Ryan Thompson. Derrick Charachter showed up to camp in shape and could score on the block in relief. All four of those guys are NBA ready and could get some minutes as rookies adding scoring off the bench. I also think for teams with multiple picks “going Euro” is a good option, but these college guys I listed I am pretty confident they could all get some playing time as rookies.

Obviously some will work out…. but there are 30 2nd rds player per year and you mentioned 8 from about the last 10 years. About 8 out 300 work out huh? So it’s a little tougher than what you are saying huh? and you missed the best 2nd rd of alltime Manu G. who happens to be the same type of player I was suggesting and he developed in Europe.
