I admit that I am not the most patient fan, so it’s probably a good thing that I’m not a GM.  However, assuming the Lakers don’t magically end up with Melo, I am extremely disappointed with their approach this offseason.  It seems as though they are giving on all 2nd level free agents and just trying to clear up cap space for next offseason.

Now, I understand that it is unwise to throw around money to undeserving players but I think it is ridiculous that they haven’t even offered a guy like Lance Stephenson a contract.  This team isn’t going to win a championship this year or the following year no matter what.  It just simply isn’t plausible.  However, in 2016, once Kobe’s contract is off the books, they will have a massive amount of capspace to become contenders.  They are worried about having money locked up with high level role players, but when 2016 rolls around, they will be looking for players of Lance’s caliber and those players will cost just as much as he does now.  I just don’t understand their logic.  Why not attempt to sign him or Monroe or Parsons or anyone now rather than just putting a horrible team on the floor and having 0 assets.  Even if they somehow sign Durant in 2016, he will need good players around him, so why not start building that team now?  I know many people will just say to be patient but it doesn’t make much sense to me.  So you missed out on Melo and Lebron, big deal.  Make a run at the next level of guys so that when Kobe’s contract is off the books you are a star away from contention rather than a star and 3 other starters away.

They are definitely going to be paying the most money per win in the NBA this season. Look at their contracts to date.

    Kobe 23.5 million

    Nash 9.7 million

Lin 14.98 million ( at least they got their first rounder back)

Jordan Hill (9 million) rumored to be only one year with team option but still

    Nick Young (5 million)

Julius Randle (2.5 million) bargain on rookie ccontract rest of roster will have to be veteran minimum guys. Robert Sacre, Kendall Marshall,

Exactly! Also, I suspect part of their obsession with landing a superstar free agent rather than good role players is because they promised Kobe a championship or something.  I love Kobe but if he truly only cared about winning he would’ve taken about half of that 23 million.  Thus, don’t worry about winning with Kobe.  Worry about gathering assets for the future.  As a selfish and impatient fan, I’d rather see Kobe surrounded by solid guys and be a borderline playoff team rather than whiffing on big names over and over.

I understand your frustration, but i must admit, i kinda like what theyre doing. Finally not overpaying upper-level role players stupid contracts. I think you answered your own question, they are not contenders this year, or most likely next year, no matter what now.

Assuming they dont get Melo, why would they throw a bunch of money at Lance Stephenson? Doesnt he play the same position as Kobe? Add that with a bad attitude, you think hes going to be happy losing AND playing second fiddle to Kobe???

If theres one player i think they should go after, its Monroe. He is worth whatever he is asking for because hes a young, proven big man who is one of the most skilled players at his position. I dont know if they could get him, but he would really help Randle develop and i think he fits well with Kobe. Then when the big free agents come around, you will at least have Randle and Monroe as your bigs.

But honestly if im the Lakers, i just chill. Just suck for a couple years and re-build. Dont throw money and bad contracts around like you used to. Collect picks, expiring contracts, and other assetts along the way.

Lol, I really hope llperez responds to this thread with some wild excuse about how the Lakers are going to compete in the West next year.
