immaletufinishbutParticipantKyrie Irving or Ricky Rubio, who would you take and who has the higher ceiling?

HitsterParticipantI always thought that Rubio would be the equal or the better of John Wall as both were trading places at the top of numerous mocks going back a few years. So I’ll stick with him at the moment but no disrespect to Irving.

BKKnicksfanParticipantTo you people saying "NOT EVEN CLOSE" have you seen any of Rubio’s game since the World Championships? I have, he’s improved on defense and he’s a even better point guard. He’s gonna be good when he comes to the NBA.
Irving, I love his game as well.
I’m calling a draw

Afactor4ParticipantI still think Rubio is a slightly more proven commodity, being that he is a professional in Europe and has been for quite some time. He also seems to do a decent job playing in a half court setting against favorably zone defenses at the highest level.
That being said, I’d still probably take Kyrie Irving, although him being out for the rest of the season would mean that he’d miss out on the higher exposure games against the bigger teams at the end of the college season.

Ghost01Participanthave i seen his games? yes, and ive done much more than watching half a game on NBA tv and saying "that guy looked good"
First off, he hasnt even shown any interest in coming to america, so thats an immediate red flag. He is a REALLY REALLY REALLY good passer. But, the rest of his game is just way too incomplete.
Just look at his numbers in europe and defend him as an NBA player. He isnt even averaging 7 PPG, last year he averaged 4 assists PG and shot 37% from the field. This season, he is averaging 4 assists and shooting 31% from the field.
LOOK AT THOSE SHOOTING NUMBERS. If you are going to be that horrible of a scorer, you better be an elite passer and defender. He is not both.

KayjayParticipantNo offense, but I’ve read a lot about Rubio. And if you think Rondo’s shooting woes are something to fear, Rubio is atrocious. And i have come to find out…HE’S REGRESSED! I was high on Rubio, and when I thought that he might end up on some team like the Kings I started to think he’s a perfect fit. Then I come to find out he doesn’t cut his own steak, he whines about not wanting to play for teams, and he’s been less than stellar since he’s been away from the T-wolves who could really use his help. But anyway back to his overall game.
I think he’ll be a tremendous passer, and an okay defender. But has nowhere near the potential Irving has. Athletically Irving has him beat, as for court vision, I can’t tell, Irving hasen’t played all that much. But what I can tell you is that Irving will be contributing faster than Rubio ever will. I’m sorry, I was high on the kid at one time or another as well. And I believe that while shooting is only one aspect of making a PG great, I have to admit you always want your PG to be a deep threat. It stretches the defense. Lol the funnything is. I’ve seen more potential from Irving in his short stint of games in college than I have Rubio in the last two years. Just saying…

BKKnicksfanParticipantShooting wise, yes. He will be a issue. However, Rubio won’t be scoring alot in the NBA. He will be a J-Kidd type guy where he leads the team as a playmaker. I think once he gets a NBA shooting coach, he will be alright.
Can we remember he’s only 20?

McDunkinTo this day i say Rubio going pro so early and never playing with his own age group again hurt his confidence and development on offense

jaysmith1987ParticipantI take irving all day he is the complete package he can dribble pass and shoot and rubio is more of just a passer. The way the nba is now its better to have that pg who can hit an open jumpshot as well as penetrate and kick i think he is gonna be a superstar.

OhCanada-ParticipantKyrie Irving for 2 reasons.
-Shooting is very important in the NBA, whether we choose to recognise it or not. Rondo is a very lucky individual he has some amazing players around him, a great coach, and extremely decepve speed and agillity. He just knows how to penetrate amazing, and when you try to close out on him he kicks out for an assist on a jumpshot. Although If Rubio is able to score with floaters, spins, teardrops etc in the paint like Rondo he will be very successful. PGs need to hit that jumper or they will get played off alot and end up having a worse oppurtunity to penatrate.
-Kyrie has already shown he is able to dominate North American style basketball, although at a lower level dont foret he was many peoples front runner for National Player of the Year as a Freshman.

Stanford hoops1There are actually a coupel of NBA PG that come in that can’t shoot well. Actually it seems that most point guards come in and aren’t that good at shooting. I dont think it will affect Rubio much because he is a very exceptional passer and will learn to become a better shooter as his career goes.

Maysek22ParticipantIf i had a team that requires the PG to score due to lack of surrounding talent, i’d take Irving, if i had a talented team that had excellent scoring options and required a great distributor, i’d take rubio. So if i were the wolves and i had my choice of the 2 i’d take irving for sure. I see irvings celing being 18-20ppg 8-10ast 1.5stl 3-4reb, whereas i see rubios being 14-15ppg10-12ast 2+stl 2.5reb. Rubio would be perfect on teams like boston, the lakers, Spurs, GS, miami, atlanta, orlando, or dallas, and Irving better on every other team in the League…

Ghost01ParticipantHey stanford- im not talking about shooting 3s. Im talking about shooting 35% from the field. That is terrible no matter how you look at it. Only if you are a Jennings/Iverson volume scorer type who takes a bunch of hits is a sub 40 shooting percentage even vaguely acceptable. Not to mention he cant even put the ball in the hoop against soft euro defense, let alone NBA competition.

HitsterParticipantDo people think that a PG should be a scorer or a pass first player?
I always think that 3 point range is important for a PG as if they have the ball in hand then it gives another immediate option apart from the pass and most top PG’s have a good 3 point range.
How Rubio will adapt to the NBA no-one yet knows and there was so much hype surrounding him before he was drafted that he has a lot to live up to. Also if there is a lockout next year and he did not come over until 2012 then like Splitter at the Spurs he may be able to negoiate a bigger salary than his draft position usually pays.

midwestbbscoutParticipantthis one is pretty close…..I’ve been thinking lately about the overabuncance of all-star caliber PG’s there is going to be in the league in about 4 or 5 years…..its not crazy to think that about 2/3 of NBA teams will be able to go into a season with possible all-stars at the 1 spot….
