JoeWolf1I was watching the MIssouri State v Creighton game last night and for those who aren’t familiar with the MVC, those two teams have serious upset potential in the NCAA tournament this year. The MVC conference as a whole is really good, Wichita State and Indiana State are also capable of making an NCAA tournament birth as well. So far, this season, the MVC is 9-2 against power 6 conferences and 4-1 and the Big 10 in specific.
This was a great game, and I wanted to see Doug McDermott and Weems matchup head to head. Most of us know McDermott, but I seriously think Weems is a legit canidate for the draft or to make a roster as a free agent. He’s the conference MVP from last year and plays SF, but has NBA 3 point range and could probably play some 2 guard in the NBA. He’s 6’6” so he is a little undersized at SF, but he’s an athletic guy and well built at 235 lbs.
He is just a well balanced college veteran who, despite being in a mid major, has played a lot good level competition over the years, including this year when the Bears took West Virginia into over time and lost a nail biter to Oklahoma State ( Weems dropped 24). He was off to a bit of a slow start this season, but has really turned it on lately. He’s just one of those players that does everything pretty well, including perimeter and post defense. He did a good job on McDermott in the post and he is a very hard guy to slow down due to his very high motor.
I think he is worthy of a late 2nd round pick, but if he doesn’t get picked up I think he is a guy who is good enough to make an NBA roster.

providencefriars1ParticipantYa I think he will have to take a Jimmy Butler route and go off in the PIT. He is a really solid player but there are a lot of those especially with mid major players this year.

JoeWolf1Yeah, agreed, the NCAA tournament will be a "potential" big boost if they make it. A big performance against a major conference opponent, especially in a victory, usually always helps the mid major guys out. Missouri State is good so that’s definately a possibility.

JoeWolf1I was kind of spacing out over the Porstmouth, apparently, and did not notice Kyle Weems was playing there. I stumbled upon his athletic and size tests from the tournament today…
As of right now, I think it’s a long shot he’ll get drafted, but he tested very well athletically at 6’5.5” with no shoes, 223 lbs a 6’10” wingspan and a 34.8” no step vertical.
He averaged a very respectable 13 ppg 4.7 rpg 1 apg and 3.3 spg over the tournament. Probably not enough to get vaulted into the the top 60, but I certainly think he’s a relevant player to keep on your radar because there actually will be a summer league this year.
