Do you think Kobe Bryant will pass Kareem as the all-time scoring leader of the NBA?

He’s currently at 28,384, about 8-10 games away from passing Shaq at 5th all-time.
If he goes on a pace of 27ppg for this season, he’ll end up with a bit over 30,000 points.

Once he gets 30,000, Kobe would need to average 25ppg and play a minumum of 70 games for the next 4 1/2 years for him to pass Kareem.

Does anyone doubt he’ll reach Kareem?  Can he hit the 40,000 point mark?  Can LeBron pass Kareem and possibly be in the 40,000 club as well?

You were so close. Just as I was going to compliment you for having a great post you flaked out and put Lebron’s name in there. Anyway, there is no doubt Kobe can do it, the question is if he will. Up until this season I would say yes, because getting 7 rings and the most points ever really helps legitimizes the claim that he would have passed Jordan. However with this new divorce I don’t know, Kobe may now just start to enjoy life a little more and forget about that particular record.

    The most coveted records:

Most rings ever with one team: 11 Bill Russell…in recent history 6 Michael Jordan&co.
Most Points in a single game : 100 Wilt Chamberain…in recent history 81 Kobe Bryant
Highest Career Average: Michael Jordan 30.1….Wow!
    Most Career Points: Kareem 38,387

He can do it, but I dont know if he will want to play long enough to. If he gets to 7 rings, I wouldnt be surprised if he would retire then. He seems like to me that he would rather retire while he is on top.

I think Kobe will pass Kareem IF  he plays until he’s 38. That doesn’t mean he has to average 25 a game at that point, but if he can get 23 until age 36, 20 at age 37, and 15 at age 38, than I think he might be able to get it. I don’t think he’ll pass the 40,000 mark, but it’s possible.

Lebron, in all honesty, will shatter whatever Kobe gets or Kareem’s mark. He’ll get a good couple thousand more. He just has so much more time, and we’ll see how he adjusts his game in 5 years, but he should still be playing at an elite level in 7 years time.

I agree that Lebron will break the record, just because of how strong he started early in his career. I would like to see how good he is when he is older though. His game doesn’t translate to old age as well as Kobe’s does. Durant also has a chance to get to 40,000 imo.

maybe im wrong, but imo one thing you have to take into account is that lebron probably will not play as good as kobe when he’s old… lebron’s relies a lot in athleticism

The fact is, that it is defintely possible for Kobe to pass Kareem, but it will not be easy, Kobe will probably mantain an elite level of scoring for a few more years, but as you get older, his body will have much more mileage on it, he is already on his 16th year in the league. Barring any major injury, and continuing to alter his game as he gets up there in age, Kobe has a chance, but there are many factors that play into it. For one I feel like Kobe is more focused on getting his next ring then passing Kareem on the all time scoring list. We just have to wait and see how much longer Kobe is willing to play, and still mantain his elite scoring ability.

I think he might be able to but we all know this will be Kevin Durants record when he retires

Kobe wants the record.  He wants to have as great a legacy as he can.  I expect he’ll stay as long as it takes to get the record, even if his last couple of years look like Emmit Smith when he was gunning for Walter Payton’s yards record.  Kobe will stay around as long as it takes, and like Emmit, I expect he’ll try to push it as far as possible out of reach for the young guns.

Lebron overall points will be double by the time he is turning 34 just because of his ppg and the among of games he plays every season. Lebron just turned 27 everyone, Kobe is 33 and kobe only got 10000+ more points on Lebron. If Lebron was still on Cleveland he would of been entering the 20000+ for sure at season ends. Kobe got almost double the games played as lebron, so y’all do the math. Most people talk about best scorers in the league and leave out Lebron. At the end of the day Lebron will break the all points record at the end of his career. I also see the ppg record close if he stop trying to get 7apg and 7rpg along the way. Lebron just need 4 titles and he would be consider top three of all time ( Jordan, Byrant and James).

Yup, he JUST needs 4 titles. That’s all. No big deal.

The only thing that worries me about Lebron is how he does when all that athleticism is gone, like we can see that Kobe can’t drive by guys and slam it home the way he used to, that’s the only thing that worries me about Lebron.

Durant has a real chance to get Kobe or Kareem, because he is just a jumpshooing 6’10 player with elite athleticism, but doesn’t rely on it. Durant’s game is built to last him into his late 30s, and if he can stay healthy, than why can’t he average 20 ppg when he’s 39 years old.

i doubt kobe gets to 38k. I would love to see it happen, but not at the cost of seeing him out there just trying scrape by as an nba player. I felt jordan kinda hurt his image a little playing with the wizards. I dont want to see kobe once he’s no longer a top 10-15 player in the league.
