Saw this article just now and it really got me thinking:

    http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/knicks/post/_/id/47899/woodson-two-starting-five-spots-are-open

The Knicks are DEEP- but with a lot of ‘great offense, limited defense’ players I think there’s a few line-ups there which would absolutely bomb. So who would you guys start, and what other lineups would you like to see? (obviously depends on opposition etc, but always good to go in with a plan!)

    I’d probably start with

    Felton
    Shumpert
    Artest
    Anthony
    Chandler

I like this lineup as a defense-first lineup. I think Artest is the key- if he’s motivated and fit, then he can be practically interchangeable with Anthony to keep ‘Melo out of tough matchups on the defensive end. He can guard the biggest threat out of the 3 and the 4 and space the floor. That means coming off the bench I’d have Prigioni, Smith, Hardaway, Bargnani and Stoudamire…lots of offensive weapons coming off of that bench, but probably not all at the same time! So I’d like to see a little bit of Anthony/Bargnani/Chandler in the frontcourt (when matchups allow), a little bit of Artest/Stoudamire/Chandler to go big or to rest Melo, and Smith as my first guard off the bench.

    How about you?

I dont see Artest starting, he shoots bricks alot. Mine would be

Felton – Shumpert – Anthony – Bargnani – Chandler, more shooting more spacing for melo to do his work

I love the additions of Artest and Beno..They’re very good on both sides on the ball..The Knicks have alot of players that good on offense or on defense, but few players that can do both…..

Beno should start,he might be the best playmaker on that team….Playing with Tony Parker,Brandon Jennings,Tyreke Evans & Jameer Nelson proved that he can still succeed while playing with an assortment of different backcourt partners and in any team system…….

Ron Artest/Metta World Peace or whoever his new name will be when the season starts…Brings some things to them they were missing last yr,like defense, rebounding and physical play..And when he’s paired with Carmelo,it allows Melo to create mismatches in his favor at pf,and he doesnt have to defend pfs….

Guys, Amare just played off the bench in the playoffs last season because he was recovering from his injury and not at 100%. He’s still a pretty good player, and I’m pretty sure he’s still gonna start now that he’s in better shape health-wise.

    C-Chandler
    PF-Stoudemire
    SF-Anthony
    SG-Shumpert
    PG-Felton
    6th-Smith
    Bargnani
    Artest
    Prigioni
    Martin
    Tyler
    Hardaway Jr.

If, and only if, the chemistry issues with Carmelo and Amare out there together reoccur, then Woodson might consider playing Amare off the bench. But I’m not seeing the season starting that way.

Not sure why they didn’t just go after Robin Lopez who was acquired as a throw in/sign and trade in the Tyreke Evans deal. Portland only gave up Jeff Withey, a future 2 and cash. Lopez would have made only $5M for 2 years which is still less than the $11M Bargs will cost this year. Would mean less tax and a better fit alongside Melo/STAT coming off the bench behind Chandler. They could easily match Portland’s offer (Camby and future 1st/or 2 2’s?) and have kept Novak to be the stretch 4. Better rotation and minutes fit, better need fit, cheaper and how fun would it be to see Robin guard Brook for a playoff series?

I would go with a smaller starting lineup like last year:

    Starters:

    PG Felton
    PG Prigioni
    G Shumpert
    PF Carmelo
    C Tyson Chandler

Last year they used Kidd at the 2 and that seemed to work. Prigioni in the starting lineup gives the Knicks another shooter and ball handler. I think Melo at the 4 and Chandler at the 5 works best for them. Then put Shumpert on the team’s best perimeter player. Shumpert also gives the starters a good athlete.

Then use J.R. Smith as the sixth man to sub out for one of the perimeter guys. I like his instant offense and his swagger.

Since the Knicks are really deep now I think they should sub in a complete second unit after J.R. Smith and the rest of the first unit needs a break. Perhaps at the 3 or 4 minute mark of the first quarter. Then you can leave them in at the start of the second quarter.

    Bench (2nd team):

    PG Beno Udrih
    SG Tim Hardaway, Jr.
    SF Ron Artest
    PF Amare
    C Bargs

Use Amare as the featured scorer in this attack with Bargs spotting up and trying to get out of Amare’s way. I also like the potential of a Udrih to Amare pick and roll. Hardaway Jr. will be a secondary ball handler and offensive weapon. Ron Artest will guard the other team’s best offensive weapon and will act as a main rebounder in this group since Amare and Bargs are sub-par in this area.

This is a great rotation for the Knicks. They can utilize all their weapons as well as their depth.

Now, in the fourth quarter and crunch time they may want to tighten their rotation. If so they could use this starting group with these three guys off the bench:

    Main Lineup:

    PG Felton
    SG Shumpert
    SF Carmelo
    PF Amare
    C Chandler

    Subs:

    SG J.R. Smith
    SF Ron Artest
    C Bargs

It looks like rookie C.J. Leslie won’t get much playing time but he wouldn’t be a bad 12th man. Also, if Earl Barron stays on the roster he wouldn’t be a bad guy to have at the end of the bench.
