I just read on Hoops Rumors that the Knicks are looking into possible trade scenarios if they decide to go that route.  The Knicks could have a healthy Melo, sign a big time free agent, and trade for a great veteran in one off-season.  It could be a smart move if the right player comes available…  but who?  Here is some possibilites I thought of, but feel free to post any thoughts or scenerios you could see happening.

Ty Lawson- Nuggets are defenitly rebuilding, but I doubt Lawson would be worth a top 3 pick.  Maybe Lawson/Chandler or Lawson/Faried.

Demarcus Cousins- there was rumors of the Kings looking into possible trades…  I’m sure they would have to include more than the pick, but this would be a huge get for the Knicks.

Nets players- Lopez, Williams, Johnson…  I’m sure they are available, but no one player is worth a top 3 pick… maybe a 2 or 3 player deal.

If you are the Knicks and have to rely on Free Agency, that’s the problem. Develop your players and stop trading everyone off for short-term fulfillment.

There has been an extended list of talent to be thrown in the lost and found bucket within the last past 10 years.

It would be ignorant for any team not to consider trading their pick.

What if Russell Westbrook decides he wants to move to NY. Or Anthony Davis. Or any top 10 player.

You just gonna hang up the phone?

I thought a team couldn’t trade their pick if it meant they wouldn’t be drafted in the 1st round for consecutive years?

The two teams can come to an agreement before the draft, then trade the player officially once they actually draft him

     I am with Rip here.

They should keep their options open…

What if the Thunder were shopping Durant?  Wouldn’t OKC think hard about taking Carmelo Anthony and the Knicks pick for Kevin Durant?

Then the Knicks get Durant, wouldn’t they have a better shot at signing some other talents?

If they ended up with Durant and LaMarcus Aldridge that would be a pretty good 1-2 punch.

I think the Knicks would perhaps approach it rather like the Cavs did last summer, they drafted Wiggins and once LBJ was in place they pulled the trigger for the trade.

Phil could easily draft BPA, the Knicks will have at least $30 million in cap space. He has Melo as the main building point, he has Calderon as an effective PG in the right situation. If he can land one good FA and then maybe put out feelers to see what his draft pick is worth.

A lot will depend on where the Knicks draft, the higher the pick the better the return he might get.

Also if teams have top players who may be nearing FA in 2016 they might think cashing in this summer and getting a top 5 drafted player in return is better than the player walking away for nothing next summer. A top player may be under contract for a number of years but might be unsettled so again a team could get a high drafted player in and save a lot of cap space.

The Knicks have traded away so many high picks over the years that personally I hope they keep the pick and look to build around the player they get.
