The Knicks and Lakers are both looking to rebuild. The acceptable timelines are different, Lakers are on a shorter leash given their new crosstown rival and championship pedigree. On hte ohter hand, the Knicks have neither and therefore can take a little more time.

With the above in mind, the teams should swap their 1st round picks and Kobe/Carmelo. Melo still has lots of productive days ahead and Kobe would be ideal player coach type for Phil, not to mention a contract that is much friendlier for a rebuilding mode.

No way will Lakers trade Kobe and nor New York will trade Carmelo.

Melo put himself out there in his contract year. Maybe just a negotiating tactic, but that kinda opens Pandora’s box. Kobe is kind of guy who may want to go high profile spot like MSG to prove he still can be The Man. Might just have it in him too. He’d sell tickets too and his boss and he have had a modicum of success in past. Phil’s sounding all nostalgic of late too. Both franchises need a return to relevance and the media would love it. Probably not gonna happen but both sides get a boost to be back in the discussion

Kobe has no trade value. Except maybe as a expiring contract.

Oh wait. I get it now.

No trade value? Forgetting about winning games for a second and think about money. Kobe holds tons of value. To be the second team in the league to print and sell his jerseys, basketball cards, posters, etc. is enough value.

I think there’s no chance in this happening, but if I’m the Knicks I take it in a heartbeat. They get to pick Okafor at 2 and get to rid themselves of Carmelo while they do it. The Knicks will never be a real championship threat with Carmelo, and they need to figure out a way to move on. Again, this deal won’t happen, but if it did the Knicks make out like bandits. I’m a diehard Syracuse fan too… let that sink in.

(especially on WFAN) that the Knicks are deadset on trading down, not up. The idea being to add a veteran piece (or two) while remaining high enough to take WCS. A "plan" I find completely repugnant, actually, but … whatever.

Oh, and as far as your trade proposal, PhillySteve? Um, to be perfectly honest, I don’t know where to go with that.

Nobodies going anywhere.  The Knicks and the Lakers could both get good real fast if free agents decide to go there, if not it will be a long rebuild for both of them.
