Knicks Championship contender with Melo?

I don't think so, I'm tired of hearing that the knicks are contenders from all these NBA analysts if they add Melo. Melo is a great player, but he will not improve their defense or their size inside. The Knicks would improve, but I doubt they would get past either the bulls, celtics, magic or heat in the playoffs. What do u guys think though? They are "experts"

I think I smell a Gallinari

I think I smell a Gallinari for a big trade in the future. They would have to many forwards and still no center.. I also See randolph being traded

Put it like this: The Knicks

Put it like this:

The Knicks would not be title contenders, but they'd be a interesting 1st round matchup against a team like Orlando. Amar'e, Melo would dominate alot of the scoring, Felton would be the playmaker. It's tough to go from there because NOONE knows what would remain after that.

Also, there is rumors of a Randolph-Pryzbilla and a 1st rounder deal on twitter. I dobut it happens.

The Knicks already get it

The Knicks already get it done on the offensive end, their weakness is defense, an inside presence and rebounding and Melo doesn't really help with any of those. Also having good deep shooters spreads the floor better for Felton and Amare to work and putting Melo's post/mid range game would kind of mess with that.

Melo can be a spot up 3 point

Melo can be a spot up 3 point shooter. They do need a big though. I think if they could find a way to add Melo and a big like Joel or Tyson, they will be contenders in the East. They just took the Celtics to the brink in a hype up game. Melo and say Tyson Chandler would help them match up better but I would rather Knicks waited to add Melo so they can keep their depth. It they do make this move though they need to either give up Chandler or Fields and not both. Also next year they could get guys like Jared Jeffries, Telfair and some other one year players to sign with them. I doubt they will have trouble getting someone to sign with a team that has Melo, Amare, Felton, and Chandler or Fields. Melo is an upgrade to Gallo but that is right now, Gallo could actually be a Melo light in 2 years. Their games are different but both guys can score and drive to the basket. Melo has more confidence and strenght down low though. I am almost to the point where I think they should just get Chandle and anothe solid big man and call it a day. I would not mind seeing Toliver play for the Knicks. He can shoot 3's and block some shots. Minny may give he up along with Telfair.

Melo would definitely help

Melo would definitely help them, but I think they should go after Mayo and Thabeet as well. Both of them have been shopped by Memphis, and would give the Knicks a defensive presence in the middle as well as a a good shooter and defender on the perimeter in Mayo.

If by some miracle they manage to get all three, then that is a solid starting 5.

THIS TEAM DOES NOT NEED MORE

THIS TEAM DOES NOT NEED MORE OFFENSE. I'm just gonna copy and paste hollinger here:

If Anthony is truly dead-set on becoming a 'Bocker next fall, the Knicks will have the means to sign him without compensation in free agency. Thus, New York remains the favorite to land him, either by trade this year or via free agency this summer.

But that only raises another question: How much would he help?

I ask because the Knicks' offense doesn't appear to require much first aid right now. Anthony is primarily an offensive player, and primarily one who operates more on volume than efficiency. He rebounds well for his size but doesn't play much defense and has a fairly high turnover rate.

And there's much more great analysis from Hollinger but I don't wanna weight this forum down. Since they started winning it became clear that what they need is a true center who will just rebound (*cough* tyson chandler) and block shots (*cough* tyson chandler) to protect Amare, and another veteran guard. Look at the Knicks' numbers. That would be BETTER than Melo.

Melo is not a very good three

Melo is not a very good three point shooter. He can shoot them but he's not very good at it(career 30percent and shooting 27 so far this year)

They wouldn't be a title contender because of there bad defense which melo wont help but they would be hell to play in the playoffs like PHX

They would be a powerful team

They would be a powerful team and win a bunch of games. But unless they don't get a real center and some guys who can actually defend they won't be a real contender on the Lakers, Boston, Miami, Orlando.

I do wonder this: I think you

I do wonder this: I think you can find defensive stoppers however. I feel if NY can find guys at the center and shooting guard positions, they could be solid.

Remember, that 1st Suns team had like Steven Hunter at C. The Knicks will have some draft picks (2011 and 2013) as well as some money to do this. If the core is Melo-Stoudemire-Felton, then it will be interesting.

Dont get Melo. Trade the

Dont get Melo. Trade the Curry and Azuibuke contracts to get something smaller.

Dont gut half your rotation, not for melo who will be there in the offseason as an FA.

They would probably finish

They would probably finish around 4th, lose in the 2nd round. But if they can also get some height (maybe a guy like pryzbilla) and sign a solid big for the MLE in the summer and maybe develop a guy like mozgov into a contributor they could be title contenders next year. Thats more than I can say for Melo with the Nets.

they would need more then

they would need more then just a defensive center. they aren't that close where one defensive center would make them a contender. they would need that and there current players to step up on defense. Melo can do that because he did for a lil while a season and a half ago so he does have it in him

Why would you want to blow

Why would you want to blow apart your rotation (a rotation that's actually winning games) for a player who's only really good quality, scoring, isn't an issue on the team. And also do it for over 20mil a year which ties up too much money to try to fill in the holes that you just created and/or didn't fill (a SG, a C, a bench)?

I just don't see the logic of adding Melo to this team. Sure, it would be great on paper, but I'm not so sure it would really create a better team.

This is where I have the problem. I don't know if Tyson Chandler is added, what would this mean? I would think maybe a couple more wins. I think NY needs some more tough players. Thinking back to the 90's, we need a Xavier McDaniel/Charles Oakley ( or more today) Ben Wallace style dude. I also think we need a shooter if we make that Melo move ( the John Starks type guy).

It will be tough if we get Melo but I think we could rebuild in that following offseason with that 1st round pick, cap space ( even if we sign Melo, we will be good) and the fact that NY will be booming again, maybe we can pull a dude for vet min.

It would create a better team

It would create a better team long term... a core of Felton, Melo, Chandler or Gallo, Amar'e would be extremely dangerous.aving that core makes them a 50 win team (but not a championship contender). They can fill the rest of the roster over the next year or two and contend.

If Melo is there then Gallo

If Melo is there then Gallo isn't ( unless Melo comes via free agency). And even then Gallo would be gone not long after with teams willing to pay more for him then the Knicks could with the new cap

I also don't think they would

I also don't think they would be title contenders but I do think it would be very interesting and appeasing to the eye to watch.

I don't think they will be title contenders because those teams need to have a ton of defense and a coach who emphasizes that. Mike D'antoni is great coach but he does not emphasis defense a lot. (He actually emphasizes all offense and absolutely no defense) And that will have a huge impact on the main contributers to the team (ie. Melo, Amare, and Felton)

Also the scrapy way the

Also the scrapy way the Knicks are playing, a defensive Center would correct a lot of their areas of weakness. You could see in that Boston game where a legit big man would have gotten key rebounds. Fields and Chandler are pretty good defensively. I would rather Knicks waited and signed Melo as a free agent. They could trade Gallo for a big man and then they would still have Fields and Chandler off the bench. Depending on the team and what quarter would determine where Amare played at either center or power forward.

despite the Celtics Knicks

despite the Celtics Knicks game, I have trouble believing the role players on the Knicks (Gallinari, Chandler) will score consistently against elite defenses especially over a 7 game series. While I'm sure Melo is capable of averaging 30 for an entire series so thats the real upgrade i think.

that said, i don't think

that said, i don't think adding just melo will make the Knicks a legit contender. They probably need one more piece maybe CP3 instead of Felton but more realistically a better defensive center although i think Turiaf is doing pretty well

I really like the idea of

I really like the idea of acquiring Thabeet from Memphis. Melo isn't a good fit for the Knicks in my opinion, because Amare is dominating as the 1st option and has great chemistry with the other players on the team. They already have a great spot up shooter in Gallinari, all they really lack is depth at the C position; they have Turiaf at PF. Thabeet has been disappointing, but he can block shots and rebound, which is all they really need. Knicks could also look at getting Jordan from the Clippers, possibly packaging Wilson Chandler, as the Clippers could use a SF. So basically Thabeet or Jordan would fit the Knicks better than Melo IMO.

The Knicks as things stand

The Knicks as things stand are a play off team but in a 7 match series I could not see them beating a full strength Boston, Orlando or Heat. Teams like Chicago and Atlanta they would be a good match up against. If you look at likely play off seedings then the Knicks could probably grab 5th place if we assume that Boston, Chicago and the Heat win their divisons and that Orlando achieve the best record outside the three divisional champions. The Knicks best case scenario would be somehow grabbing 3rd seeding probably behind Boston and the Heat and avoiding Orlando in the first round.

With Melo the Knicks would be stronger but still behind the Heat and probably Boston. Regarding Boston, a lot could depend how many frontcourters they can wheel out behind KG, if Shaq, Perkins, JO, Davis and Ereden are all fit then they have huge depth there and can look to nulify the likes of Dwight Howard in particular.

Anything beyond making the play-offs that the Knicks do this year will be a bonus unless Melo comes on board soon but assuming they add Melo or another top FA next summer then 2011-12 should be a 50 plus win season for the Knicks. They may achieve 50 wins this year but that would be outperforming rather than having a team which you can look at and say if everyone stays sound then they should win 50 plus games.

Also after 2012 Boston may well have to rebuild so if the Knicks have a top core in place they are well placed to continue being challengers for a few years beyond that.

If Gallinari was still on the team as well as Melo then the Knicks can easily retain him as they have the resources to match any offers and luxury tax isn't a problem for a large franchise like them especially when you consider the potential revenues they will make from any future play off runs or the amount of mechandise they can shift at the Garden.

A veteran C via FA next summer is a priority so Dalambert, Big Priz even Kendrick Perkins could be serious options. Lets say the Knicks missed out on Melo then some combo of the above and one of Tayshaun Prince, Shane Battier and AK47 could be a decent fall back option as you'd have a couple of rock solid defensive guys who could play around STAT,Felton, Gallinari and Chandler.

Are you guy retarded? You

Are you guys retarded? You talking about defense? Playoffs are about matchups, and if they get Melo they will be title contenders that's just obvious. Defense is no problem when you have talent like that. Furthermore, the x factor you're forgetting about is the garden, those NYers will go nuts! Oh yeah and Melo and Amare are top 5 talents in the NBA. Anyway, the Lakers would beat them but that's all. Orlando no way, Miami no way, Chicago lolz, Boston toss up.

PS anybody saying the Knicks don't need Melo...wooooooooooooooooow.

Make a trade with Portland. right meow!

I would much rather see NY make a trade for a defensive center, Bring back Camby, or Pryzbilla. That guy is heads above all the other bigs not named amare as far as talent. Give him minutes bet he wouldnt get 10 and 10 a night and provide a big body to go beast mode on others bigs in the league. It would be tough because portland needs and wants there bigs but if I were NY I would just wait and see what happens with this team, if they flop and dont make the play offs Melo still wants to be there, and we will see that next year. It's worth a shot.

If they get Mello w/out

If they get Mello w/out giving up Fields and Chandler I could see them being title contenders.

Especially if Azubuike comes back and Mozgov improves.

If they make a stupid trade like giving up Chandler, Gallo, Fields for Mello they'll have no depth at all and won't be a title contender.

Impossibility. Melo for Gallo and Eddy Curry only happens in Knick fans wet dreams.

They will need to include Chandler AND probably Fields. Its not worth it. As mentioned above, Melo is a scorer. One of the truely Elite scorers, but a scorer. The Knicks score plenty of points. He isnt going to help them get 4th quarter stops at all. And the team has rallied around Amare. Hes playing out of his mind because he is the unquestioned star of that team.
