JordanC20ParticipantSay John Calipari quits at UK and goes pro or decides to retire who do you think would be a good fit as the new coach and who do you think UK would most likely go after.

Memphis MadnessParticipantI think that the Kentucky Wildcats should apply for the NBA. They can be the new Eastern Conference expansion team with Seattle taking one out West. That would give the NBA a good rival with Memphis as well as the always fun Kentucky/Indiana rivalry in basketball.
If Coach Cal steps down or is forced by the NCAA to play minor league baseball for a year, then I think Shaka Smart would be a good choice if he continues to win. Obviously it would be one of the best jobs in basketball. I could see Rick Pitino’s kid getting a look (based on name recognition). … Josh Pastner at Memphis would be a guy they would look at. If Brad Stevens flames out with the Celtics then he would be a good fit too.
Kentucky should look at the guys with NBA experience. Pitino coached for the Knicks before going to Kentucky. Then he gets an NCAA title. He then washes out with the Boston Celtics, comes back to college at Louisville and then wins a title there too. Coach Cal skips out on UMass, gets fired from the NJ Nets and now he also has an NCAA title.
Why not go after an older guy? Bobby Knight might like one last shot. Former Wildcat and coaching/GM genius Pat Riley would be cool too.
If Coach Cal left, my first call would be to Pat Riley. Make him an offer he cannot refuse, make him a coach for two years and then after that move him over to A/D. In the meantime groom or look for a successor.

TarHeelRavenParticipantShaka does not have to leave VCU sometime.. He has spurned places such as Illinois and UCLA to stay in Richmond. I know Kentucky is on a different level than those two and Shaka’s HAVOC would be fun to watch at UK. I am a VCU alum and it seems like VCU and Shaka are the perfect match. He has been getting some 4 star recruits recently, something that we were never able to do in the past. I know that he will never be able to lure the Julius Randles, Jabari Parker’s and Andrew Wiggins of the world to VCU, but he takes little known recruits and puts them in great positions to succeed. Briante Weber was an unknown recruit not even in the top 100, but he led the nation in steals last year.

ItsRainingNegsParticipantI’d take Phil Jackson, Brad Stevens if he flames out, Pat Riley (UK connection), John Wooden’s hologram, Josh Pastner, Mike Shisefsky, LeBron, Kobe, Rick Barnes, Larry Brown, or Erik Spolstra. Seriously when Cal retires we are screwed.

Memphis MadnessParticipantMan, I’d love to see Phil Jackson or Pat Riley at Kentucky and I am not even a Kentucky fan.
Bobby Knight would be good too, if only to bring back the Kentucky vs. Indiana series.

Memphis MadnessParticipantBruce Pearl might be a guy to look at when he comes off suspension. He had the UT program rolling, and they even beat D Rose and Memphis to get to # 1.
His ego is also big enough to fill the shadow of Coach Cal’s ego.

ItsRainingNegsParticipantYeah I don’t understand why people act like it wasn’t. If I didn’t know how to spell his name I would just put Coach K. I mean Jesus Christ I put Phil Jackson as the first candidate to replace Cal.
