McDunkinKentucky guard Charles Matthews will transfer from the school, head coach John Calipari announced Wednesday.
“The hardest thing as a coach is to lose a player that you really want to coach,” Calipari said. “In Charles’s case, I believe he is going to be a productive college player who has the ability to play at the next level. I know Charles’s best basketball is ahead of him, and while I’m a saddened to see him go, I support his decision and will help in any way I can.”
Matthews has been granted a full release without restrictions. “I want to thank the coaches, my teammates and the Big Blue Nation for all of their support this season,” Matthews said. “I gained great experience during my freshman year at Kentucky. This was a difficult decision for me, but at the end of the day I felt like it was in my best interest to explore other options. I appreciate the support Coach Cal has given me in making this decision and the commitment the coaching staff made to me for this past season and beyond. Kentucky will always hold a special place in my heart.”
The freshman played in all 36 games with the Wildcats during the 2015–16 season. He averaged 1.7 points, 1.6 rebounds and 0.4 assists per game. Matthews has not said where he will transfer.

ChewyParticipantHe would get open looks and just seemed like he didn’t want to take the shots. He showed some promise defensively. He seemed intimidated/ 2nd guessing himself all season.
If he were to transfer to a school like U of Illinois, he would start immediately and I bet he shows more confidence offensively.

Kokayne_DawkinzParticipantAgreed I saw him play along t this year and he was just so tentative. He would even pass on open drives. He really needs to work on his handle and shot which is weird because he was once projected as a PG. I hope he goes to a school like Illinois my Illini can really use him. Calipari also gave him a full release which is great because not to many coaches do this now a days. UK is going to really need someone to step up to provide some perimeter depth

ChewyParticipantI would like to see Hawkins get more minutes as a sub. Very athletic, GREAT defender and is improving as a shooter.
I understand why he hasn’t played, seeing as UK has been stacked the last 3 years, but I just liked him agrresive he played. Everytime Hawkins was on the court, he knew he only was getting a few minutes, so he went 100% every second and drove ball handlers crazy.

DunksNJordans23ParticipantIllinois is his likely landing spot. During his recruitment it was essentially UK or U of I, Charles even commited early in the process during his junior year of high school. I am sad to see him depart from the UK program.
Also since we’re on the topic of transfers I would like to see the sit out a year thing go out the window, as long as these kids are on good acedemic standing they should be able to play immediately.
Good luck Lil’ Penny.

doubledribblerParticipantI agree with this 100%. Scholarships are year to year. Any other student can transfer and any coach can trade coaching jobs without sitting out. No reason to penalize players as long as they are handling their business in class and staying out of trouble.
