We all know by now that Kentucky had arguably the greatest recruiting class in history, and to add to that some of last year’s recruits have stuck around. Calipari’s going to have a hard time distributing minutes to keep everyone happy, and a hard time deciding the starting lineup.

What is your projected starting lineup?

    Mine is:

    PG- Andrew Harrison
    SG- James Young
    SF- Alex Poythress
    PF- Julius Randle
    C- Willie Cauley-Stein

Another lineup they could try out if Poythress hasn’t improved his aggressiveness is:

    PG- Andrew Harrison
    SG- Aaron Harrison
    SF- James Young
    PF- Julius Randle
    C- Willie Cauley-Stein

My only concern is the Harrison twins. As a coach, I wouldn’t want them sharing a lot of time on the court together unless they fully bought into the idea of playing as a team. When they’re on the floor together, they like to run a two man game and not get others involved. That said, I’m sure Calipari can get both to buy into the Kentucky brand of basketball as the twins have great chemistry between the two and the team would be really scary if they built a similar kind of chemistry with the rest of the team.

The other hard choice was between Cauley Stein and Johnson at the starting center spot. I like Johnson more as a player, as he’s a more natural back to basket scorer, but I feel Cauley-Stein has earned his starting spot as a returning vet of the team. Also, I think Cauley-Stein and Randle make a better fit, as Johnson might take away shots from Randle.

Any thoughts on my lineup and any different lineups you guys see maybe happening?

Here is roughly what I think the UK rotation will look like

PG Andrew Harrison 35, Jarrod Polson 5

SG Aaron Harrison 28, James Young 12

SF Alex Poythress 24, James Young 16

PF Julius Randle 30, Alex Poythress 6, Marcus Lee 4

C Willie Cauley Stein 25, Dakari Johnson 13, Julius Randle 2

Derek Willis, EJ Floreal and Domonique Hawkins will play in garbage time. I don’t see Marcus Lee getting much PT at all either

I don’t think Aaron Harrison is better than Young but is a better fit in the lineup because he is a shooter while young is more of a scorer. Harrison will spread the floor more for his brother and Randle to get in the lane and score

I like your rotation as well because, as you said, Young is a better scorer than Harrison. He’d be a scary good 6th man in college, and maybe the best bench player at the college level.

I think Johnson will get a little more playing time though. Maybe those 6 minutes you have Poythress at PF go to Johnson? Or maybe half of them. I just think Johnson’s got too solid of a post game to not get at least 15 mpg. He’s one of those rare back to basket kind of guys.

I think their might be chemistry issues if both the twins don’t start.

Besides i think James young would be best served as the sixth man of the bench as an offensive spark. He’d be like the college version of James Harden when he was with the thunder. Can you imagine how frustrating it would be to be guarding poythress or one of the harrison twins only to have james young come in who is prob the best offensive player on the team.

Now that I think about it, Young probably would be best served coming off the bench to provide a scoring option. I agree that Aaron Harrison doesn’t have the same creating ability as Young and is more of a complementary role player then a scorer. Also, with Young starting, they’d have three guys who could create their own shots, Andrew, Randle and Young. I think this would take away opportunities from each other. With Young coming off the bench he could play more in his scoring role while Aaron could stretch the floor for Randle and Andrew.

with so many good players coach Cal has a lot of different directions he could go in. I like your starting five with Young at the 2 tho.

    PG: Andrew Harrison
    SG: Aaron Harrison
    SF: Alex Poythress
    PF: Julius Randle
    C: Willy Cauley-Stein

    Sixth man: James Young

    Bench:
    Dakari Johnson
    Jarrod Polson

    Reserves:
    Marcus Lee
    Dominique Hawkins
    Derek Willis

Cal has built a team that can rival ’12 overall (though I prefer ’12) due to the depth this team has. Cal only goes eight if he has the players and they are all so versatile. I see Poythress having a Terrance Jones type of improvement from year one to two and I hope that Aaron Harrison can play a Doron Lamb role.

I’d give 2012 the nod only because of the defensive presence of Anthony Davis. If you factored out Davis and Randle, I think this team is just a little better. But that’s just my opinion, and I think it’s a case of 1A and 1B with the two teams. I just prefer the potential play of Andrew Harrison to Teague’s, but we’ll have to wait and see if Harrison does out perform Teague. Also, I think this team’s bench will be better with Johnson and most likely James Young off the bench and with garbage minutes from Marcus Lee.

Their practices are going to be more competitive than most of their games, whoever starts will have earned it.
