I think everyone is aware that UK’s bigs next season are going to be loaded. What people seem to have trouble agreeing about is who should start. So if you were Coach Cal, who would you start 3-5?

    Personally I’d go

    SF Alex Poythress

    PF Trey Lyles

C Dakari Johnson (Karl Towns would work too)

Cauley-Stein is a defensive force at the college level but he just really isn’t that good to me. You can’t run offense through him and these other guys are just flat-out better. Towns can play either the 4 or the 5 and his range and scoring would be valued off the bench, although I think he’d work as a starter too. Marcus Lee is a nice talent but he’s just in a terrible situation. I think he’d be best working on his wing skills so he could take some minutes at the 3. He’s a very fluid and high level athlete so defensively it probably wouldn’t hurt him. If he could develop a little bit of jumper or work on his handle it’d be able to get him on the floor more.

Don’t be surprised if its Ullis, Harrisons, Lyles, and Dakari starting.  I can see WCS starting as well, people forget that even off the bench he almost always played more minutes than Dakari last year.

Calipari is supposedly really high on Ullis and they may do a 2 pg system like they did with Wall and Bledsoe.

Great post 3! I think they will go with a 3 guard lineup for large amounts of the game. I don’t know if this will be their starting lineup but I think the top 5 highest in minutes played over the entire season will be the Harrisons, WCS, Lyles, and Ulis.

Ulis is going to be tough to keep off the court. If he was a few inches taller I think people would be comparing him to Chris Paul. Kid can flat out run the show.

It’s going to be really interesting seeing what happens with the Kentucky roster. I think out of the freshmen, Lyles and Ulis are the ones who will force themselves into big minutes but obviously they will be extremely deep and can afford to spread the minutes out fairly evenly. I haven’t seen much of Towns and Booker yet to know if they are as special as Ulis and Lyles. Ulis and Lyles were impressive when watching their games. They both seem extremely mature and under control for their age. These guys don’t make many mistakes on the basketball court. Must be nice to be a Kentucky fan!!

I think people are too high on Marcus Lee.

He is long and a good athlete, but I don’t see much post or perimeter skills. My comparison for him would be Brandon Wright.

    PG:Andrew Harrison
    SG: Aaron Harrison
    SF:Alex Poythress
    PF: Trey Lyles
    C: WCS

WCS lost his spot to Dakari last year but still got more minutes than him. his defense and athletcism is too good to have him sit during key moments of the game.  with WCS returning for his Jr season, Cal will give him the edge going into the season to be the starter.

i put Poythress at the 3, but he has very few perimeter skills. if he doesnt improve on shooting, ball handling, etc.  he may lose his spot to Devin Booker coming in.

Cauley-Stein is fast enough to play the PF and he that wreak havoc on another team’s offense.

Trey Lyles, although lacking in speed and athleticism, has upside as a scorer with his ability to knockdown open 3-point shots and create offense for himself on the perimeter as well as in the post.  None of that can be said for Poythress, who is more of an athletic/defensive hustle guy, so I think it’s perfectly possible Lyles can pick up minutes at both the 3 and 4.

It’s a good problem to have with all these guys next year. They are real big, and with the Harrison twins coming back. Watch out.
