Ghost01ParticipantOn a night where the Lakers lost their fourth straight, the Dukies knocked off MSU behind an oustanding performance by Kyrie Irving, and Thunder won in double OT behind two epic performances by Russ Westbrook and Jeff Green, I would like to give a non-sports related shoutout to Kanye’s new album.
Hes Kanye, so he doesnt need any additional attention, but if you havent listened to this album, you are missing out. It is an absolute masterpiece.

IndianaBasketballParticipantI spend a lot of time in the studio, so I understand a lot of what goes into making a song… And this guy Kanye is serious at what he does. People may not like him, but he’s a great artist. It’s not always so easy being creative, original, thoughtfull, etc and he does an amazing job at being just those things lol.
He isn’t necesarily the greatest rapper or MC, but the dude just makes great music. Everything from the beats, samples, drums, bells, ad-libs, backround stuff, the way he puts everything together, etc… He goes all out. He’s not just doing this just because or to make money… He has a purpose. The dude is just a genius. You can always tell a Kanye produced track when you hear one. He has his own stamp and you can’t say that about most artists. And his lyrics in this album are very good. There’s some depth.
Overall, I’d rate this album a 9/10.

MuggsyParticipantI miss the days when rap was good, nice list Dymes. Living in Oklahoma where rap wasn’t exactly mainstream in the 90’s I found myself listening to a lot of Louisiana rap, specifically No Limit Records.

IndianaBasketballParticipantHa ha No Limit. I used to be a big fan as well, but then I started listening to Nas and he changed my whole opinion about hip-hop/rap.
And M-Dymes should be smacked for not putting Lupe Fiasco on that list lol. Keep an eye out for J. Cole. He’s got next.

mikeyvthedonParticipantHe is awesome, love Little Brother, Foreign Exchange, his solo work, all of it. The only Drake song I listen too is "Think Good Thoughts" with Phonte and Elzhi and I think Phonte steals the show. I have only heard "Power" and "Monster" off of Kanye’s latest album, though everything I have heard so far has it being a great album. Little disappointed he did not use the stuff he did with Premo and Pete Rock, but maybe that will come out later. Kanye makes good music, is a great producer and while I do not think he is a great MC, he is not bad. I had a huge list of people I listen too if you look through the archives, it was a post concerning hip hop, and I am not sure if I listed Phonte directly, but I listed Justus League which encompasses Phonte, 9th, and a great deal of others. Like the shout out of Phonte, McDunkin, he is one of my favorites.

McDunkinThats whats up Mikey..i have always been a little pissed that 9th left I think him staying would have kept the group together.
You could kind of see it coming though. Pooh rapped/joked a few times about people favoring Phonte over him
As far as Kanye. I think Graduation, College Dropout, and Late Registration are all great great albums…after that is another story to me

mikeyvthedonParticipantYeah, very much agree with that too. Not too sure about the whole 808’s and heartbreaks thing, though "Gay Fish" was a great track (South Park reference). Yeah, I was bummed when 9th left LB, but that is what happens to groups and especially to producers who make it big, they get sidetracked on other things and creative differences arise. The only thing I liked about Elite was 9th getting the Executive Producer cred on the soundtrack, would have loved to have heard that. Sure he still got some money though :). Again, still have to listen to this album to judge it, but I know it is getting really positive reviews.

JNixonParticipantSome people say this is a masterpiece, and some say Kanye is too weird and scatterbrained on this next CD. I want to listen to it. I hope it’s really good, because 808’s was mediocre at best (even though it is still better than the vast majority of rap albums nowadays)

Ghost01ParticipantLike the feedback-
MDymes- its 2010, not 2001, not 1991. I have listened to every Pac song ever released, thats all documented and over. Ofcourse hes amazing, i am talking about right now. Nas is a joke but atleast you put Rakim on there so you know something about something. But again. 20-10. That shyts old.
jnixon- this is odd and different, but nothing like 808s. totally different from beginning to finish. No auto tune in sight.

Ghost01ParticipantJay Z is vastly overrated. I think hes probably a boardlerline top 10 rapper of alltime. People put him 3rd behind Biggy and Pac which is hilarious.

IndianaBasketballParticipantI have every studio, collaboration and compilation album that Nas has every made and to be honest… He hasn’t dropped anything GREAT since Stillmatic.
Nas is an amazing lyricist and has a smooth flow, but I don’t like the production of a lot of his tracks. The beats are garbage.
I don’t have a problem with mainstream. I love listening to Nas, Talib Kweli, etc, but I can’t listen to them all day. That’d be boring… I need a variety.

IndianaBasketballParticipantI can’t wait for Lupe’s next to drop. Food and Liquor is one of my favorite albums ever. And The Cool was super creative. Even his mixtapes are off of the hook. They keep pushing his new album back. Now, it won’t drop until March 8. Really feeling the single "The Show Goes On."
What did you think about Nicki Minaj’s album?

MkadozaParticipantUrban, are you crazy? Nas’s recent stuff has been garbage? Have you not listened to Distant Relatives? The production on "It Was Written" was phenominal. Illmatic, God Son, Stillmatic, I Am…, Streets Disciple (criminally underrated), Untitled was hit and miss.
Jay-Z has the best produced and lengthiest track list of classics. Just listen to any album, and realize how many bangers he made. Then listen to his words and understand how many of your favorite rappers he birthed.
No one mentioned anyone from Wu? Even with Raekwon’s album? With RZA, GZA, Ghostface Meth?
Lupe needs to be allowed to do him. The most talented younger lyricist in the game. Cole is nice. Drake and Minaj are literally trash. They have no substance whatsoever.
Eminem Show and Encore were the best? Slim Shady or Marshall Mathers. Even Infinite. But seriously, nothing he did after those is really close.
Other people who need to be named: Jadakiss, Styles P, Kool G Rap, Common, Mos Def, Busta Rhymes, TI, Ludacris, Andre 3000, Big Boi….
As for Kanye… I will reserve judgement until I hear the damn album.

Im Your FatherParticipantNas needs to get back together with Premo, I have no idea why he doesn’t do that. I think he did say he wanted Kanye to produce his next album, which would be good, but he and DJ Premier make magic together.
No one every talks about It Was Written, but I think that’s a classic album too. I would say it is one of his 3 classics. I would rank Nas’s best 3: 1) Illmatic 2) It Was Written 3) Stillmatic
I actually think Jay-z has gotten such a perception of being overrated that he’s actually become underrated. His most recent stuff hasn’t been very good, but he is still easily top 5 greatest of all time. He used to be an amazing lyricist. He spits fire throughout reasonable doubt, that is easily his best album and one of the best ever.
I also just re-discovered discovered a couple great Jay-z tracks that I had forgotten about because they are on such awful albums. "U Don’t Know Remix" ft. M.O.P on the Blueprint 2 and "Where Have You Been" on the Dyansty.
Also for Jay-z, why do people hate on In My Lifetime Vol. 1 all the time. Sure it has a couple of garbage tracks, but it also has some very, very good ones, just like almost every other album. It is generally regarded as one of Jay-z’s worst, but I don’t really think it is.
Ice Cube doesn’t get near enough love, like Jay-z, he is easily top 5 of all time and no one ever really talks about him anymore. He was the genius behind N.W.A. and his first two albums are both classics and I listen to them both all the time.
Speaking of N.W.A… why do people operate under the delusion that Eazy-E was a good rapper? He never wrote any of his lyrics until he went solo and then his lyrics sucked. Sure he was a badass and had a really cool voice, he is a hip hop icon, but that doesn’t make him a good hip hop artist.
Speaking of overrated West Coast artists, why do people think Snoop is one the best of all time? He literally had one good album, which was very good I will be the first to admit. Since then, 95% of his material has been absolute garbage.
For a long time, I got really tired of Eminem. My issue with him is that he is amazingly talented, but he doesn’t really seem to have all that many good songs IMO. But, I have been going back and listening to some of his stuff, and at his best he unbelievable. I am particularly partial to "Run Rabbit Run".
I never get tired of Biggie. Ever. He is in my mind everything a hip hop artist should be. He was a great lyricist, had great wordplay, he was funny, he could be series, he was one of the best story tellers of all time, etc.

Also, a blast from the past from Jeru the Damaja:

Mr. 19134ParticipantThe Format is amazing I love that song. Premo was supposed to produce the whole Doe or Die 2 album which is coming out soon people should be on the look out for. AZ is so underated and it was him that inspired me to start writing. Listening to AZ rap is like listening to a waterfall the dude defines FLOW.
Eminem is still amazing as ever. Have you heard his new ish with DRE? The Song off T.I.’s new album all she wrote. And Eminem and Royce Da 5’9 got a crazy song out right now called Echo…It’s fire. Slaughterhouse is hot and just wait for their Shady debut. Their was a rumor that Eminem’s next album will be titled The World Is My Slaughterhouse, and it will be formatted like Jay Z’s Roc La Familia pretty much an Em album but with heavy feature from Joe Budden, Crooked I, Royce, and Joell to set the stage for their Shady debut. The song Echo was also suppose to feature T.I. but he got arrested before he could record his verse. But Just Blaze has already spoken that Em is about halfway thru recording his next album and it might drop this spring. Eminem is a machine and is still on top of his game. hiphopdx.com is a good sight for new audio and news from rap. BTW Hunger For More 2 is a solid album, Lloyd Banks is as good as ever flow wise.
But I am sick of people posting about a new album and then other people getting on here hating then naming a bunch of 90’s artists like that was real hip hop. NO!!!. KANYE WEST IS REAL HIP HOP! What he did for this album was revolutionary. He released all the tracks on this album, except 2, as part of his G.O.O.D. Friday promo. (Getting Out Our Dreams) He basically gave this album away just to hype it up. But like Ye said a bootlegger can’t give you what I give you. If anybody on here has ever tried to make music on their own, when you hear the mastered versions of these songs it will blow you mind.
Also you know what 2 producers Kanye brought in to help him make this album a classic hip hop album just taken to the next level? Pete Rock and Q-Tip. 2 legendary producers who were never associated with candy coated songs or mainstream. Matter fact the only knock I have against the Kanye album is the songs he left off. Like The Joy featuring Pete Rock, and the Q-Tip produced My B!tch.
Not for Nothing….My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is a masterpiece in production and relevant lyrics. Kanye West sounds like the new Ice Cube on Chuck D on this album. He don’t bite his tongue for nothing and I have never hear him rap this aggressive. Kanye West is taking hip hop to new heights. And people hated on the Runaway performance saying he used auto tune and it stunk. That just shows your ignorant because it’s not auto tune but a voice distortion tool used throughout the album to give it this hard fuzzed out edge. On Runaway dude is killing the MPC while playing the piano all while singing the lyrics to runaway but fuzzed and distorted in a way that his voice comes off like an electronic harmonica. It’s truly revolutionary.
If you are a fan of real hip hop, and groundbreaking production, not to mention world class track mastering you must buy Dark Fantasy. Kanye West is one of the few artists that actually know how to make a themed album nowadays. In an era where rappers just make a bunch of songs and throw them on an album. Kanye West actually has a vision for his album and makes it all tie together by his production.
"Aint nobody as cold as this, did the rap and the track, TRIPLE DOUBLE NO ASSISTS!"

mikeyvthedonParticipantKRS is my favorite MC alive, but Biggie is still my favorite of all-time. I love everything he ever did with Preme, my favorite song is actually similar to that of Allen Iverson, Unbelievable. But, here is one that is underrated. They all just kill it.
