Looks like Lavar Ball has started contacting high school kids for his Junior Basketball Association.  Funny thing is they are sending invites via Instagram.  The concerning thing is he is contacting players that have already signed with a college to try and presuade them to decommit.  Other colleges are not allowed to do this, so I am not sure why it is OK for a professional league to do so.  At the end of the day I am very skeptical that the Junior Basketball League will even get started.  If it does it will likely not last long, which will ultimately screw any kid that accepts money to play in the league.

Sactions are a problem, but I could see kids like Billy Preston not waiting around to find out if they are eligible. I am not saying this JBA is the answer but the way the NCAA drags it’s feet on issues pertaining to eligibility a friendly league that doesn’t require an 18 year old kid to spend time in a foreign country and not garner much playing time might be enticing enough to move the league forward. Also not dissing the idea of kids experiencing culture. This league would present a viable alternative to while offering substantially more playing time. Problems I have with this league… Lavar Ball is running the show. Who would coach these teams? Will it become an extension of AAU?

I really hope no one signs until there is definitive proof of financial viability. The Amerileague scammed more than a few guys. This has the potential to scam guys who are even younger and lesser known. If this falls through, then what? Everyone heads to Eastern Europe to play in scrimmages?

Ball has already apparently scammed the few people who were dumb enough to buy his ridiculous shoes. There’s basically no chance that this takes off.

He’s already reportedly been turned down by Simi Shittu, Tyler Herro and Jalen Carey. If the lower-tier prospects are seeing through this, I can’t imagine the JBA will be able to get top 5 guys.

It’s just such a stupid idea. I understand that school isn’t for everyone, but getting a free education while pursuing your dream is invaluable. Trading that in to make what I assume would be a paltry salary while playing in a glorified men’s league that NO SCOUTS WOULD TAKE SERIOUSLY would be insane. Hopefully this (and Ball himself) just disappears.

Lavar Ball is the worst thing to happen to basketball in a  long long time in my humble opinion.  I can understand people saying he’s an entrepeneur, he’s making moves, he’s selling his brand, but he’s such a blowhard, arrogant douchebag it’s impossible to like him.  I would hope that college prospects would not give up playing high level college basketball and put their professional future in this guy.
