I’m not sold on Julius Randle.

He’s not going to be able to guard PF’s in the NBA like Aldridge, Love, Davis, Duncan, Griffin, Nowitzki, Randolph, West etc

And on the other end he brings no perimeter game at all.

A likely comparison for him is DeJuan Blair basement, Z-Bo ceiling.

I’d love to be convinced otherwise.

On the defensive end you are entirely correct. he will not be able to guard those particular 4s. even though he is a very good athlete, and has good feet he simply isnt long enough and doesnt have a big wingspan. what i dont agree with you about is the fact that he has no perimeter game at all. if you watch tape of Randle in high school his shot was pretty good from the outside, which would be a nice midrange game in the nba. the reason you didnt see it in college is that Cal doesnt ask his bigs to shoot the ball. i remember as a fan begging Anthony Davis to shoot the ball from outside more when he was in lexington but it simply isnt the offense. i dont think that anyone would argue that Davis has a lousy midrange game, it has just shown itself more in the league. i absolutely expect the same from Julius. imo a z-bo ceiling is too low for randle due to his athleticism being at a much higher level than Randolph.

I think he is a gamble. He might really turn out to be average and not a star player.

When you look at his game and break it down, nothing he does makes collective sence and his weaknesses Are part of his strengths, like his "building a castle with his hands and kicking it with his feet." Old saying…

he got great touch around the rim but struggles over length due to short arms and non explosive no-step vert.

his ball handling good, but not good enough for a nba Sf, and his shooting sucks right now.

He is mostly productive with the ball in his hands, and I just don’t see him dominating any aspect of the offensive side of the ball. How could he run the post? (Read above), how could he operate high post truly successfully when he can’t shoot a lick. He can’t run good pick and rolls either.

    doesn’t play defense

With all this "intensity" he supposedly plays, I think he got that James Harden intensity.

hint: check the previous James harden threads.

The guy I compare him to would be David Lee. A very good offensive player and solid rebounder, however will struggle on the defensive end.

I don’t mind the Z-Bo comparison, but he has more athleticism than Z-Bo and more along the lines of Lee.

I disagree somewhat because Lee is pretty good with both hands when Randle is critisiced for being to left hand dominant and not using enough of his off hand

Never been a fan of him. I’ve broken down his weaknesses since HS days when people was raving about him.

for the record I still have him at the 4-5 spot due to potential and production but not a fan…

specially of those double pump behind the head floater bankers he puts up at will, those will get swated by good defense, or at the very least, contested to the point of making the shot’s make % drop to the floor.

julius Randle to me operates like a non athletic Blake griffin in the post as supposed to zach Randolph. I don’t picture Randle making a textbook hook shot like Randolph, more like a set foot spin to pump fake to double pump fake contested lay in.

good night, neg ahead like every other time I blasted him.

Thing about Randle is that hes very solid and confident with the ball in his hands, he’s an above average ball handler and his mid range game looks like it could improve with time.. Defensively youre right he will have a problem some nights with bigger fowards but most guys 6’8 do anyways.. I dont think by any means hes a corner stone talent to build a team around but he will be an excellent addition to a team that plays a flex or high elbow post sets… this will help develop Randles potential the most due to the fact hes a very solid face up 4..

Those guys can’t guard each other either…..and his mid-range game isn’t bad and he can put it on the floor.  Give the kid a break

I think he’ll be alright in the long run. His first few years will be dificult for him. He has to find a niche’ in the NBA. His biggest hurdle will be changing his playing style but I think his work ethic will really be a factor whether or not he’ll be a bust or not. He will have to adapt to the NBA game and change a few things.

if it’s only because of defense, then chill out..he will be alright..

all those guys you mentioned can’t guard each other either.. because overall out of top PFs very few are good defenders..

and Randle isn’t scrub..he can defend..I think he showed a little of that in the tourney..

I think he can be a better defender then Love Lee Griffin maybe even Aldridge who still doesn’t use all of his great length..

Randle is an all around horrendous defender. his defense is worse than the names you posted.

Nobody can guard those guys. And on the other end, if he polishes up his midrange J, he’ll be fine. He’s quick enough to drive past defenders and strong enough to finish at the rim. The more variety he adds as an offensive player, the better he’ll be. The potential is there.

You can point out the weaknesses of Wiggins, Parker, and Embiid too.  No LeBron or Tim Duncan in this draft.  At 4 or 5, Randle is a good pick.  I would even consider him at 3.

I like him on Philly if they can pair him with a great wing player with their other pick.

Randle might not end up as good a shot blocker, but when he had to anchor the defense when WCS was out he did good.

His pick and roll offense and defense will also look a lot better when he is paired with a PG who has lateral quickness.

he did not anchor nothing. Kentucky’s defense was worse when WCS went down. Randle can move laterally but he cant defend the rim for nothing. has zero awareness.

      he’s a wreck on defense.

Minimum he’ll be fine. In time he will be at least a 16 point, 8 rebound guy. His D is not good now but he will get better, very few 4’s come out of College as strong defenders.

theres a difference between not being a strong defender to flat out being terrible. Randle was terrible.

Randle isn’t as large as Randolph physically but I can see some likeness there and David Lee is a decent comparision too. I think that Randle needs to go onto a team with a good defensive anchor at C that will help with his lack of wingspan and allow him to concentrate more on his offensive game.

He reminds me of Z-Bo (his overall play style) and Paul Millsap (In terms of his ball-handling ability for a 4)
