There has been a lot of talk about Julian Wright lately, and increased minutes for New Orleans this year. So far, It’s safe to say he hasn’t backed up his lottery selection at 13th. He has shown flashes as a defender and an athletic benefactor to Chris Paul alley-oops, but his shot selection has not developed, and he often tries the to force action with the drive and dish often resulting in a turnover. It seems every time Hornets reward his short bursts of potential with a start or a significant amount of minutes, he just proves how inconsistent he really is. In no way do I think the book is closed on Wright already, but I think year is pivotal for him. If he doesn’t produce and show significant improvement in the increased minutes the Hornets have already talked about giving him, he could be out of the league.

Do you guys think he is going to show up and improve this year? or is he speeding down the highway towards Bustville?

Probably he’s gonna be the 6-7th man of the team. I project the starting 5 of NOH would be Paul, Peterson or Thornton, Peja, West, Okafor. . . Posey would be the 6th man and Juju getting minutes at the 4 position… If i were the Hornets, i would probably trade away peja. and make posey the starter at the 3. So that Juju could play more minutes at the forward positions

i really look at him as a more athletic boris diaw. If u remeber, Diaw struggled his first few years with Atlanta, and then as soon as he got traded to Phoenix he exploded. I think Wright needs a change of scnerery. Plus, I dont think Byron Scott is that good at developing young talent, so Wright really needs to get traded if we want to see the player we saw at Kansas

You took the words out of my mouth. I think of Wright the same way as Diaw. Both have the versatility to play a bunch of positions and their coaches (Scott and Woodson) werent sure where to play them. He would be better off getting stronger and improving his perimeter game more though, but his handle and passing ability along with his size will allow him to play the 1-4 effectively in spurts if he’s used right. I believe if Wright went to Pheonix or New York he would be a valuable utility player, because their systems are made for guys with his versatility and athleticism.

There are a lot of interesting comments on this guy. Personally, I think he will never pan out. Some of you may be right though. He may just need a change. He is never going to get to do much ball handling with Chris Paul on his team, which takes away from Wright’s game. There are a ton of guys in the league that are just in bad situations or on teams that don’t utilize their talent correctly.

As for Byron Scott, I agree that he doesn’t develop talent very well. He was the same coach that wouldn’t play Bass. I’m sure NO could have used a guy like that and personally I thought Bass was as good if not better than Big Baby when they were both at LSU. But again, I don’t think of Scott very highly. His most effective big man against the Lakers in one of the finals was Mutumbo who Shaq has always had trouble with and who was super effective on him, but instead he kept giving minutes to Jason Collins and Aaron Williams. Even though I’m not 100% sold on Wright I think he can do a lot of things that could help that team out.

Peja won’t get traded until he is on the last year of his contract. The only other way I see him getting traded if for some crazy reason they were dumb enough to trade Chris Paul. If they did so, I see them being able to easily include Peja to help dump salary.

I agree, Brandon Bass was a very very good player at LSU. Big Baby played better in the year they went to the Final 4 (Tyrus Thomas and Tas Mitchell also factored to) but Bass was a steadily great player throughout his career. His teams just didnt have nearly the talent of Big Baby’s, which is why he was less heralded in college.

he will never be a bust, because i think he can be a like down defender when given the chance, and that would not be standings from i guy who barely made the lottery

I don’t expect Julian to ever become a starter or difference maker. He just doesn’t bring anything in particular to the table that stands out other then being tall and versatile. One advantage Diaw has is that he can post up and read the defense and make a pass or look to score.
