OhCanada-ParticipantNow this is just from my basic knowledge of the NBA waivers so someone with more or correct information please add.
Josh Smith has been waived. Now whether it was a good or bad decision is irrelevant. I believe it is a mark of a rebuild in Detroit. You don’t need a salary cap when he acquiring assets and developing prospects.
Waiving Smith allows Detroit to spread out the remaining $26-million over 5-years instead of the original 2. Trading Josh would have resulted in losing an asset such as a lottery pick or KCP as we have seen in the past with similar situations like with Gilbert Arenas.
He can be claimed off waivers for the remainder or his contract although I doubt that will happen unless a contending team has a $13-Mil trade exception.. Not likely.
Ultimately Smith will likely clear waivers in 48 hours and then become a Merry Christmas Free Agent.
Where do you expect him to sign?

don042488ParticipantThe Houston Rockets have the most money to offer him, he has a very close relationship with Dwight Howard, and he has a chance to start for a contender. The odds on favorite to land Smith’s services in my opinion

mixtape2003ParticipantRockets make the most sense for him , cause if gives him a change to start at the 4 for a contender and play with Howard. Ariza, Smith, Howard will make a scary front court on the defensive side. I can see the Clippers or Mavs making a run at him as well.

GBeeParticipantSmith isn’t better than motiejunas. Hes not even better than terrence jones. hes hardly a great fit there. Quite simply, hes not a starting caliber player. One fit that could possibly see is the clips. Glen davis is as fat as ever and the clips have a stretch off the bench to allow smith to operate near the paint for 15 or so minutes a game.

r377ParticipantHouston are the favourites. Others include Clippers, Grizz, Heat, Kings and Dallas who all have had interest.
"A team source has said that he could succeed in Wright’s old role in Dallas. " – report
Smith was high school team mates with both Howard and Rondo.
I agree with GBee – Houston already have Terrence Jones (who was coming along well before injury) and Motie who has played well also.
Even in his Atlanta days his dad came out publicly and told him to watch his shot selection and T/O’s trying to run fastbreaks. He has never listened to his dad nor has his style of play changed. I think he would be a risk to any contending team

Detroit FanaddictParticipantI’m with you on Smith not being as good a fit with the Rockets as everyone thinks he will be but it does seem most likely at the moment that he goes there. The best fit for him in my opinion is Miami.

esperanzafleet69Participantthe move should immediately save the pistons around 8 mil per year in cap money, using the stretch exemption.
this should make detroit again one of the teams with the most money going into next years FA class along with philly. i just hope SVG isnt stupid enough to use it.

Willo15ParticipantHe will probably land in Dallas. I went to college with Rondo at Kentucky. Of course I didn’t play basketball, but I played baseball and me and Rando became cool. Rondo and Smith played high school ball together at Oak Hill and are BIG TIME buddies. I’ll say Rondo talks him into coming off of the bench and being a defensive guy and a threat off the bench.

ExumInfernoParticipantWith Crowder and Wright traded, the minutes and role off the bench are there for Smith in Dallas.

Magic JordanParticipantI’m hoping he goes to the Rockets and does Josh Smith things so he improves the pick that the Rockets are sending to the Lakers by 2 or 3 positions to the low 20’s. I think he hurts any team he goes to at this point, minus the 76ers.
0- Posted on: Mon, 12/22/2014 - 4:06pm #959827
For_Never_EverParticipantI agree if he starts he isn’t helping in my opinion. Donatas brings more to the table, and Black is pretty good doing the dirty work. Smith is a declining inefficient player whos game is based off his athleticism that isn’t what it once was for at least a couple years.

JordoParticipantCould Dallas turn him around? I mean Monta had that rep of chuck first cancer before he really turned his game around as a Maverick. Spurs? If anybody could get the best out of him, it’s Pop.

TheArtistPaysthePriceParticipantI wonder if the Mavs get him and force him to be Brandon Wright 2.0.
I know its impossible for Josh not to be Josh but there is a ready made role for him that would in turn help him get a decent pay day.

TheArtistPaysthePriceParticipantNobody has considered the Cavs. With Lebron and Love they could give him 15 minutes at center. They could use Smith to limit Andy’s minutes and supress Tristan Thompson’s free agent value.

SmooveKRYPTParticipantYou see what Aldridge did to Terrence Jones in the playoffs last year?
Houston wants him for his defensive versatility above all. Another gifted athlete to throw at the likes of Aldridge, Dirk, Blake, Ibaka, etc. come playoff time so Dwight doesn’t have to get in early foul trouble chasing them around and trying to stay in front of them from 17+ feet out. He doesn’t have to see the ball much offensively…put him in pick & rolls with Harden and tell him if he shoots too many mid range J’s he’s coming out. That simple. I love T. Jones and Motie, but come playoff time they’re a liability starting against the 4’s in the West. I feel much more comfortable with them splitting 30 bench mins than one starting and playing that many.

jaycee24ParticipantI see him in Miami they could use him at the 4 think him Deng and Bosh in the frontcourt and how versatile they’d be. I think id like him with the Pacers before the Rockets I think thatd just be a toxic mix for Houston. I think he could work out in NY as well not that theyd even be interested at this point

tuck243ParticipantHe’s not really a stretch 4 and strictly needed for his defense and running the floor. I can’t think of any team he would thrive on starting realistically… MAYBE Sac-town, but they won’t win many games anyway with changing coaches recently.
He’s almost restricted to a bench player IMO… Maybe Detroit was a bad fit and that’s why his game suffered so much. Currently at this moment though, what we’ve seen, Josh Smith is a role player off the bench.

HitsterParticipantJosh isn’t a stretch 4 as his 3 point range is so average, Houston remains the best bet but Miami would be a very possible move.

cozmojimParticipantRealistcaly I think he goes to Houston or Dalas, but I like the fit with the Grizz. He would have to be willing to take the 6th man role, but his game fits thier style and they have strong enough team leadership. This is a team that took Z-Bo and Toney Allen when they had similar reputations to Smith and made them into leaders. The real problem is that he thinks he’s a starter on a contender which he’s never proven to be. He can start for just about any non playoff teams, but he may have to take a smaller role on a contender. Can his ego handle that?

HitsterParticipantHe’d be 6th man at Dallas too. One team not mentioned is The Thunder, they could use a big man scoring option and with Ibaka and Smith they’d have great defensive options.
Also he was a bit of a legend in Atlanta and they are in contention in the East so could he make a sentimental return home.

i’m jus so offendedParticipantThey maay not want to deal with his sauntering attitude, but if any team can fix a player’s broken shot, it’s the San Antonio Spurs. Kawahi’s couldn’t shot 10ft coming out of college. I read an article about the Spurs having this guy who their shooting "guru" which has worked wonders on guys. Danny Green became an elite shooter. If he could buy into being the 6th-7th man on that team, he’d be a force.
