What a roller coaster ride for this guy.
From being ranked as high as the # 1 highschool recruit to struggling on kansas leading to a second round selection .
This summer he was unbelievable and was hot scoring almost a point every minute and shooting over 60% from 3.
I know there are alot of good guards on Memphis but he needs a chance .
Do you think he’ll be any good in the future?

I don’t know summer league is very misleading, he needs to improve his handle so he can create shots for himself and others, despite his explosive hops he is very small add in the fact he can’t create for others and you got an undersized shooting guard.

I really thought he would get a bigger role his season in Memphis as they needed shooting, looks like he may have to go elsewhere

Imo shooting that percentage in any organized league is eye opening.
Especially against other nba and former NCAA or international players.

I don’t see it but I think his max potential is a poor mans Monta Ellis.
If he busts I see a Eddie House, basically a specialist off the bench.

He has all the tools, cept height and character. Talent wise he can be very effective. Needs a shot though. Not quite sure where he would fit in, Portland has a thin bench, maybe start out there as a reserve and earn minutes. I think he can be a solid scorer off the bench, maybe a poor mans JR Smith.

People like him because what he did in high school, but he’s not that good in the NBA. He may be able to drop 7 or 8 points off the bench for the Wizards or Bobcats, but that is probably his peak IMO. For a good team he’ll be stuck on the end of the bench because he doesn’t have what it takes to guard two guards or play the one spot and run an offense.

When he goes to another team, I think it will make or break his career. Playing for a terrible team would probably benefit him because I can’t think of a single playoff team that he could get more than 10 mpg for. If he can get 15 mpg he can score a bit, but again, he’s not going to get 15 mpg for very many teams.

Best case, he carves out a spot on a 2nd or 3rd unit somewhere, a la John Lucas III, who he reminds me a little bit of, but with less passing skill.

and there is a lot to like. he is talented. any player with talent can succeed. its like everyone is saying…it depends on the opportunities and roles he is afforded.

right now there is just so much talent in the league, its just not easy for a guy like him, and as each new draft comes about, it gets that much harder.

I hear what you are saying about being able to defend but not all successful players can do that effectively and individually. He is athletic enough to guard PG’s, dont go telling me he is not. If he falls in the right situation with a team that has excellent team defense, he could be a valuable player.

He’s not a superstar as projected out of HS, but that doesnt mean he cant succeed. I made a post here a while back about Selby and Wroten as a duo. Selby being the SG on offense and Wroten being the PG but guarding opposite positions. It was just a thought and example of how a team may be best served to utilize him.

No, I’m not saying Selby can’t guard points, just that he isn’t one so most guys like him don’t play big minutes because they struggle at creating for their teammates. I don’t think he’ll ever start in the league because of the reasons I mentioned. I think his biggest asset is his 3 point shot and ability to get hot, which, to me paired with what he can’t do, scream specialist. At least that’s what I see now, he’s still young and could develop more, but he seems to be honing his shot more than expanding based on what I’ve seen in the past year and a half.

I remember you Wroten/Sebly post and it was definately thinking outside the box. I just don’t think Selby will be with Memphis too much longer, and unlike Selby, I think Wroten will be a fairly important piece of Memphis going forward. He hasn’t played much right away, but I think he’ll be Conley’s primary backup by the end of next season. He can’t shoot a lick, but with has the size to be a good defender and he can penetrate and dump off to Gasol and Z-Bo for the Grizz.

right, he is odd man out in Memphis…but you mentioned specialist and ability to get hot and knock down the 3. there was a guy that won some championships when I was growing up that fit that bill. they called him the Microwave. a tremendously successful player…who incidentally wasnt a starter.

Selby was a HS talent who wouldve been a college talent if not for such a rocky career. To be an NBA talent he has to work hard but that alone wont do it…he has to fall into the right situation as well…before someone more talented or polished beats him to it.

my point is, you dont have to start to be successful, guys like Jamal Crawford and J.R. Smith are playing at high levels on winning teams and neither one of those guys are defensive stoppers or great creators for others yet still playing close to All Star level.

Yeah, Waiters reminds me of the Microwave a bit, but I follow you. I think we see Selby in a similar role, but our difference is how big and good we think he’ll be in that role. Maybe he’ll be another Jamal Crawford like you think or maybe a John Lucas III or Jannereo Pargo like I think, or he could shoot the gap and have a nice career like George Hill.

no, I dont think he will be Crawford or Smith, just using them as examples. Selby is not that dynamic a scorer as those guys but he definitely has his strong points. It depends on the offense. I think he has pick and roll potential with the right big men. I think he can be better than Daniel Gibson for sure…and that aint bad because Boobie has managed to stick around and be a $4mil per year player. Not an all star level player but a valuable one.
