John Wall is very overrated

And this is coming from a Wiz fan. He's a horrible half court player. He has really poor control of his handle in the half court is often out of control that he can't move laterally when driving and is very easy to anticipate. He doesn't see plays 4 seconds in advance, he is often looking for his shot first and then looking to dish it out when the defense has killed all of his shot opportunities. Wall is not a pass first point guard. Defensively, Wall is very soft, he can't post up other point guards. He doesn't box out well, he isn't very physical with screen and times never attempting to old up a bigman to help his bigman recover. You would think that the coaches would bench Wall until he showed the ability to slow down after he sprinted and attempted throw his man off balance. Maybe even take a step back jumper once he gets into the lane. Again, Wall can't go into reverse once he is full sprint mode and he lacks the ability to stay low and maintain his dribble once he is in the paint. I think Wall is really overrated. He is a fast break point guard but outside of a fast break....he is a pretty below average point guard that doesn't draw up plays with McGee, Blatche, Young, and singleton when the game is over based on film of his opponents.... Just not a high level of involvement. This is what owner Ted Leonsis has to create if he wants his team to move upwards. Force these fives starters into a room and teach them how to dissect the next team at a high level based on defense and what should work to exploit that type of defense.

Or, trade the dead weight

Seems to be a lot of it. I know John Wall has not been playing well, but this team seems like a straight up mess. I mean, these guys all seem like individuals rather than a team. It does not appear that they have defined roles or a sense of where to be on the offensive end. Not to mention, they probably get beat the hell up on defense as they all lack elite strength (maybe outside of Blatche, who still seems like he gets pushed around some).

They are way too young and when you look at their line-up, Wall is the only lottery pick they have. It is not like you NEED lottery picks to win, but it certainly does not hurt. Most of these guys have put up production beyond what is expected of their pick, but than trade that for someone who is a better fit.

Meanwhile, I think the only untouchable is in fact John Wall. Other than that, look to ship whoever for players to build around for the future. Right now, this team has too many fantasy players and not enough solid All-Around basketball players. You need role guys, not a bunch of players with delusions of grandeur putting up numbers and losing games like it is what's in fashion.

0-8

It's tough seeing the Wizards go 0-8 this season.. I just can't believe that Wall hasn't shown any improvements in his game.. The thing about young players is, I'm not ready to criticize them fully just yet... 21 years old and still going, I think he can still improve his skills for the betterment of the team but I just didn't see it during this last 8 games.

Bring on the negs but I think

Bring on the negs but I think second to Monroe, Derrick Favors is having the best all-around year of anyone from the '10 draft class...and he's going to play the whole year as a 20-year old.

Somewhat agree with Wizard

I agree he hasn't improved his shooting and passing all that much sense coming in the league and right now I don't see him as the next derrick rose like he was predicted to be but more like a steve francis. Right now he's been relying on his athleticism and speed i haven't seen much improvement. But to his credit he's a second year player that went through a lookout and I think he will get better over time right now his shooting and some say his attitude might be the problem but I think he has to work harder to improve instead of relying on his talents alone

His situation has really

His situation has really stunted his growth, I doubt he would ever admit it, but going into practice and doing what he loves is probably a burden because of the idiots he has to work with.

I agree that he hasn't shown any real signs of progress yet, but the Wizards have to DO something to better the situation, because this isn't workin. Stop letting your best player continue to be unhappy and MOVE some of these cancerous players, they really have no other options at this point.

Wall is slightly overrated. I would take Rubio over him, just because I feel he's a guy who can play with anyone.

I like Mcgee people think he is part of the problem. He plays hard, block shots, scores when he can. Dunks everything around the rim, not a bad free throw shooter. Does everything centers are supose to do.

It's hard indeed to judge him

It's hard indeed to judge him now, as people judged tyreke evans during the last weeks, whereas his team seems completely destroyed....

Bball is a game of team chemistry and it's tough to judge him reponsible for the whole failure (even if he's their point guard). He's facing his first great disappointments and failures.... ok let's give him some time to adjust and answer. That's through that kind of tough moment a player builds his game, confidence and mental toughness.

Rubio (I've been a HUGE fan for years) was really killed by media and fans last year when he played poorly for barcelona and spain. And now you see how good he is and everybody is in love with him.

Don't overreact when young point guard face issues to make their team win. It takes time to learn this specific position.

Lol bro dont you know you

Lol bro dont you know you cant call John Wall overrated?

The only thing I can say is, he hasn't improved and he hasn't lived up to the OWN hype he brought to himself which was:

Take the Wizards to the playoffs

Improve his jumpshot to be a dominate player and be like Derrick Rose or on that level

He felt Derrick Rose and Russell Westbrook took advantage of him last year so he wanted to prove this year, he is better or on the same level as them.

He hasn't did any of the things he mentioned. And thats big talk, that he cant back up yet.

yes and he played in 34 mins. against ridnour and rubio who arent that great of defenders and as a team.

while rubio had 13pts 14asts 6brds. looks like he's on HS playground balling with kids hence the 5to's

maybe the washington staff or coaching staff have problems controlling/commanding this awful team..

who said he would become a

who said he would become a superstar, I said i didn't expect him to reach rose's,westbrook's, sucess this year, i made a simple prediction i think he will avg 20 and 8(not hard to believe since its only 4 more ppg then last season), and i didnt expect the wiz to make the playoffs because i knew they would be bad(instead i picked the raps who probably wont make it either but i wanted to include one bold prediction) . but its cool I will wait at the end of the season as he improves how many of you get back on the bandwagon(you invalid,Never Ever, and Steven seem like people who have stuck to their predictions, so that last comment wasn't directed toward you).

ok not you.. who said it was you anyway? ok fine with me too.. lets get back here in a month or the end of the year.. 20 and 8 it is..?ok.. i predicted at least close to those numbers, just numberwise. and now i take it back lol. at the end, even at the end of their careers he wont be equal to rose or other elite PG that ive read somewhere in this site.

He is 21. He is clearly a pass first PG... but who is he supposed to be passing to exactly?

He's highest assist ratio as a rookie since CP3s rookie year.

Cut him some slack.. good chance he turns into a superstar.

I though he would eventually

I though he would eventually be a superstar in the league and I still do. Yeah he's having a very rough start to the year but his play last season wasn't a fluke.

The Wizards are one of the worst teams in the league at the moment and Wall is taking his lumps but by the end of the year I think his numbers will be the same if not better than last year. And in the years to come he will be an impact player as well.

Holy duck sauce; he is going

Holy duck sauce; he is going to be a fabulous player. For the fifth time, this team is beyond awful and needs a complete overhaul and change of culture. I like Leonaia but damn, he'd better start making some changes because this is just wasting time of Wall's career and stunting his growth want to get the hell out, and making him. He can't give the ball to a guy that's gonna take 12 dribbles, waste 20 seconds off the clock and then shoot a contested fadeaway like Blatche and Crawford and complain about touches or shoot 30%. Or give the ball to a guy that shoots a spinning hook shot finger roll from the free throw line like McGee. This team is doing nothing but holding him back.

The whole team is messed up

The whole team is messed up but I agree Wall is playing horrible lately. Its hard to be a pass first gaurd if you cant trust who your passing too, its hard to stay confident in your shot when players are out of position for rebounds, and its even harder to improve on these aspects when the people around you arent. Washington has to get rid of Blatche, and one of the shooting gaurds immediatly and salvage whatever they can from those talents. I would also give up on Lewis and use that amnesty, or just cut him. Establish a new team, and a new identity by firing Saunders and developing a new staff that will create roles and honour work ethic.

Until Washington takes a similar route non of their talents will play to their true potential. Wall will have to settle as a good fantasy player, or a "could be" Top 5 talent or a "what if" talent.

And Mcgee is not a Center at all. He is always out of position, Minnesotas front court was punishing him. It might not show up on the stat sheet but that really makes a big difference. Mcgee doesnt have the strength to go up against most PF's in this league. He reminds me of Amir Johnson last year (when he wieghed less)except longer, and with more athletisism although Amir isnt a bonehead and he is about 250 right now as well.

This subject is ridiculous for so many reasons, it's not even funny anymore.

If you've all been Rubio supporters and Wall skeptics since the beginning, where the hell were you before the start of this season?

And the term "overrated" has been used so much, it's no longer valid. John Wall is now an underrated prospect on this board.

"Who mention anything about Rubio other than you ?"

Not many in this particular topic. I guess I'm just disappointed with the lack of crow-eating by everybody else.

"Search John Wall pronostics on this site, I'm in that thread that was before the season during the leage hype."

Ah, looks like you got me.

But I'm with Lemon. Wall's teammates are holding him back, and the kid still has All-NBA potential.

C'omon he's got 21 year he is young and probbably most guy with the most potential in NBA..Reason why he is forcing bad shots its beacuse his team is in mess..everybody play for himself,i think Wizards need's new coach and try with that..You cant be a overrated after monster rookie season that Wall had last year..

Overated?

Overated how? I mean I can see what you are saying if you mean he is overated as far as being a franchise/saviour after only one full year of play but thats as far as I will go.

Who is overating him? Is it the casual fan? What do they know besides hype anyways? Is it the commentators? I havent heard them say much about him outside of his potential this year.

Do you guys know who Gary Payton is? He is an all-time great and former #2 overall pick. He came in with great expectations as well. What did he do in his first two seasons? He struggled. But wait, there's more....Payton played 4 years of college ball. Also, Payton's first year in the league his team won 41 games, 2nd year....47, 3rd year....55. He came in on a team that featured a young (but already better than McGee) Shawn Kemp, Eddie Johnson and Derrick McKey (who were both much better than Lewis at this stage in Lewis' career), and Ricky Pierce. They also had guys like Michael Cage and Nate McMillan.

If you say he is part of the problem, thats a relative statement. He is the starting PG on a losing team, but if you take him and put him on a winning team right now, he'd be the next best thing sinced sliced bread. If you trade places with him and Rose right now, the Bulls would still be a good team although not as good and the Wiz would still be bad although not quite as bad. Rose cant even save the Wiz. Now, Rose is clearly a better player at this stage so that may allow for a few extra wins, but he would essentially be part of the problem if they were losing because he is a part of the team. Of course he is part of the problem, he is a part of the team so thats an absolute and actual statement.

Overating and underating is part of the game, a lot of times we dont know what certain players have and then thats all relative to their situation. For the simple fact that Kobe has been the best player in the league for most of a decade....we as fans and commentators may be overating him in terms of what he truly has left and his ability to lead a team back to victory. Stats dont tell the story and we dont know how much of the old Kobe is left. Some may be overating him and others may be underating him. In fact, I dont like that word when it comes to Kobe or Wall. I rather use the words overestimating or underestimating.

well

after he was drafted and didnt join the wolves soon, some old timers here bashes him early on and how he's too choosy to find a team(he wants la, sac or ny). even some say he wont be a solid player because he lacks athletisism. i defended like he can be picky because he is already a european sensation at such young age and that still is a high level of game plus he's skill set is better fit to the nba so he's best is yet to be shown.., i got negatives that time tho :]

He is overrated because he

He is overrated because he isn't Russell Westbrook or D Rose right now. That is basically how this is being judged. He isn't going to average 10 assists because everyone he that he can pass to likes to dribble the ball too much. Addidtion by subtraction. Get rid of Blatche & Young. Give him some spot up shooters. It is his second year. His first year he had a great season. His second season he didn't have an off season to gel with his guys. He is still going to have a good season. Give him some more time.

I agree he hasn't improved much in some important areas like his jumpshot. H needs to get a better J to reach his enormous potential. The Wizards have a lot of work before Wall & the team can reach their potential.

trade rose and wall as in right now? lol. would you give them bonding time to gel at least. washington players were built since like they got drafted and not improved as "expected". however chicago's players are glued as it is and a fraction of that credit is because rose led them to what they are now. we, talking about john wall/ washington players NOW. not the glove or any.. ffffuuuu.

^ yes right now is what we are talking about. ofcourse he isnt at that level right now like he was treated months ago. thats why. i could look and search for that post where he is in most top 5 PG's coming in this year but i wont just for your satisfaction heh..

I think he's raw, I have for

I think he's raw, I have for a while even in college. The thing that makes Wall's upside so big is that despite the fact that he is extremely raw and is playing off natural talent, he has shown signs that he can take over games with his athleticism. He's not quite a pure basketball player from an overall skills standpoint. He needs to learn how to play at more than 1 speed, work on breaking people down off the bounce to create rotations from the D to pick apart because right now he has not proven to be an outstanding ball-handler from the PG spot, learn fundamentals with his shot and on D, and learn how to play efficient halfcourt basketball in terms of shot selection and running an offense. He has never been great at setting up a half-court offense and simply making plays for others, even at UK when he was pure drive and dish. You have to do more than drive and dish to be an effective NBA PG. He won't take the next steps as a player until he learns how to play in the halfcourt and learns how to make better decisions. On top of that, improving his shot really wouldn't hurt, even though he has the groundwork for a decent mid-range shot.

That team has a lot of

That team has a lot of headcases and low basketball IQ players on it. I suspect Wall has trouble playing smart, in part, because he plays with other guys who aren't playing smart. It is a little like when I play pickup, if the guys on the court know how to cut, I'm going to hit them for easy layups. But if they don't cut right (or maybe at all), then I can't.

John Wall over-rated?

Chauncey Billups played 2 years at Colorado before being drafted #3 overall by the Celtics. It took 7 seasons and 5 teams as a pt. guard before he lost his "bust tag". Since that time Billups has become not just a top pt. guard but a winning player as well. Moral being is that it can take time and the right situation to learn the game and it might not be with the team that drafted the player.

Give Hime Time

In this PG driven league its going to be difficult for Wall to develop fast with the team he's playing with. He needs a co-star...Nick Young and Jordan Crawford are inconsistent. Though Crawford has more upside. McGee lacks post game ability. Blatche...oh for the his sake please trade him. Blatche would be much better in a different system. But most importantly Flip Saunders must go..this team can win at least 30 games but its up to him to give them an identity. Demand toughness and get this team running. They're not built for the half-court game. They need to put pressure on opponents and run the break

f%8s sake, stop the 'give time, cant say now bs' :)) . and giving examples of other vets. isnt a factor. its just about j.wall i am talking about and how is he overrated THIS YEAR alone. before the season starts wall fanboys are too proud to label him as top5 pg/ all star/ wiz playoffs THIS YEAR. but now they're like' oh wait till its done, the team mates suck not him/ and quick to hype based on zero games before the lockout, at least we/i got to prove in 8 games..

wheres the fun to that if we wait, its not like these players care about our opinions. now we're gonna discuss about the obvious? its just for brag.. dont bring those old samples, we know about that already. tsss if u want then make that in another thread.

the Vets are an example. Its not like the Sonics picked Gary Payton at # 2 and didnt think he would be a star. He had huge expectations. Overated/Underated is a matter of opinion. I for one dont feel I am overating him. There were people last year that said he was better than Rose coming into the draft. Remember when everyone thought the Nets were gonna win the lotto and they basically had Devin Harris traded before the season was over? Thats overating. I never said Wall was better than Harris RIGHT THEN. Or that he would be a better pro his first year than Rose would be in his 3rd. Who is saying he is a top 5 PG? I mean who are these people who are overrating him? I am sure there are plenty of CASUAL fans and hype machines, but what do you expect for them to do. My question is.....what knowlegable person has him in their top 5 PGs???

http://nbadraft.net/forum/who-or-what-do-you-consider-elite-nba

read my posts there, I have Wall between 8-11. As far as elite ability/talen right now, I put him 8th, below Steph Curry but above Kyrie Irving.

as far as how GOOD he actually is at this moment, I had him 11th, below Steve Nash but above Mike Conley Jr.

do you think I am overrating him?
