ag-pennypackerParticipantI wanted to see what you guys thought about the Joel Embiid article that SI wrote. My opinion is that it is sad for two reasons. Firstly, if Embiid really cost himself to miss another year because of maturity issues and poor conditioning/diet it’s a real shame because he has so much talent. Secondly, it’s sad the Sixers sold Embiid out like this because you know they must have released this information to the SI reporter. Let me know what you guys think.

T RexOne more reason top picks aren’t the be all end all. Many hyped top prospects develop major entitlement issues. Jabari Parker with the Bucks is probably almost identical to PHI’s struggles dealing with Embiid.
And Wiggins looks thrilled to be in Minny, rarely a good sign.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Exum had a bit of a motivational problem either. Always tired.
Randle to his credit looks to be in the best shape of his life, and he’s not running out of gas after a few bursts up and down the court like he did at Kentucky.
Russell and Winslow both looked out of shape at summer league, and neither has done much since.
I swear, the pre-draft workout process is a huge part of player development, with that cut-throat competition.
Think of DRussell types as the Apollo Creeds, and the Terry Rozier types as Rocky.
Russell was smarter than Apollo Creed though, and refused to workout against Rozier and every other point guard that would have whipped him all over the court.
Look at Anthony Bennett, #1 pick, and the lazy entitlement he developed.
Same thing with Dion Waiters, who hardly did a single pre-draft workout before shutting it down with a team promise.
Having a top draft pick is rarely what it’s cracked up to be, and drafting beyond the top 5, or even lottery, makes it easier for a team to take a risk on a guy that the fans don’t necessarily know about and believe to be god’s gift to basketball.

Are you trying to imply that Wiggins being thrilled to be in Minnesota is a bad sign? I’m really confused by this statement.

T RexOut of this next 2016 draft class, who is most likely to coast and get lazy after being assured of being a top draft pick? Probably half of them, just based on recent history of these AAU spoiled brats.
Sullinger is another one, his entitlement was so bad it didn’t even matter that he dropped to the 20s in his draft. That’s what happens when you’re the best player in high school and college, and when you don’t have some intense life circumstances that make you really angry and motivated, like Marcus Smart.

natevalParticipant+1 for the first time I’ve ever seen a post from you knocking a Celtic.
As a Celtic fan I really had high hopes for Sully. Luckily I don’t think he’s going to be good enough this year to trick the Celtics into paying him in the offseason. Sully s prime trade bait for the Celtics, he needs a fresh start.

BothTeamsPlayedHardParticipantThe way in which Philadelphia is going about rebuilding is not a new conversation. Sam Hinkie has his share of defenders, but the big problem I have is that he is selling a fanbase on pushing his job assessment and the difficult decisions associated with building a winning team down the road. After reading this article, my initial takeaway is to wonder, ‘who are the sources?’ Other than Brett Brown, nobody comes off well, but certainly Embiid comes off worst of all. For the life of me, I do not know how an employer can get into an employee’s residence and fill his home refridgerator or check his room service bill. I know some teams have gone all out with their practice facilities and hq to include healthy meals, even meals for players to take home if they want, but a person’s private home is his not his employer’s. I cannot help but wonder if it is the same guy who said he weighed 300 lbs last season. I also hate to think Brett Brown is behind it, though it is possible he is starting to wonder if he is going to lose his chance to be a head coach in the league before the Sixers ever give him a representative squad with which to work.
To me, the funny part of the Embiid mess is that they were gifted Okafor last summer. This is not to dismiss D’Angelo Russell, but there is going to be another guard of his caliber in next summer’s draft. Joel Embiid was not on Okafor’s level as a prospect, and none of the centers candidates for next summer seem remotely close to Okafor. The Lakers allowed them to luck into near certainty (injuries can always happen) at the most difficult position to find it. It should be all smiles, but I guess not.

T RexI don’t know if somebody was trying to drop Okafor’s draft stock, but somebody before the draft compared Okafor’s work ethic to Sullinger, and said Okafor will only do the bare minimum, work wise.

NBAjunkie81Participantfor flat out "mistakes" ie falsehoods contained in the article by author & full blown Hinkie hater Geltzieler – he seemed to be just throwing ish at the wall to see what stuck – falsey claiming the Sixers front office was at war over the MCW trade – Geltzieler named a person named o’Niel as the president when O’Neil has not been associated w/ the team since before Hinke & Hinke is the actual president… Geltzieler also falsely claimed that the Sixer do Not have a buy out clause in Saric Euro contract when they most certainly do….
I’m not a Sixers fan, but the attention they have recieved nationally has puzzled me since we have several rebuilding teams that have been losing for a decade & they are largeky ignored… Phila hired Hinkie only 28 months ago after they had to accept that the Bynum deal destroyed the franchise & he would never play for them… reportedly, Doug Collins was so distraught that he suddenly quit right before the 2013 Draft on the verge of a nervous breakdown…
I started to look into & actually research what Hinkie was doing last year b/c in all my years I have Never seen the national press line up shoulder to shoulder & attack a team that was already flat on it’s back…
I figured this October there would be an All Out assault on Hinkie b/c they came within a Whisker of having 3 top 10 Lottery picks for the first time in history… Add to that Saric attempted to break his contract in June b/c he Wants to join Phila & Joel Embiid was reportedly Destroying NBA vets in 5 on 5’s last spring… Imagine how we would all feel about the Sixers if they started this season w/ Noel, Stauskus, Embiid, Saric, Okafor, Mudiay & Winslow???
Well it looks like they could have an even better hand next year… according to Durant’s doctor – who was part of the surgical team – Embiid’s foot was in "far better shape than Kevin’s (Durant) & we expect a 100% recovery.." So expect Embiid, they do have the buyout for Saric, so expect him, it looks like they have a real chance to get Ben Simmons & Jamal Murray w/ that Lakers lottery pick – they will also have two picks in the 20’s owed to them from Miami & OKC… When you consider that all star level pg Ty Lawson could Not garner even a #30 pick last draft, imagine what Phila can get for Two 1st round picks in the late first round – I’m reading that Hinkie is going to package these picks & possibly a prospect for a young established star – I’m reading Paul George all over the boards… It sounds crazy but they made a run at Jimmie Butler last June, if Indiana falls apart, they could go into rebuild mode, but if not PG13 – they WILL get someone Very good for those picks….
I find this Fascinating! I have Never seen national media go balls to the wall to wreck a franchise before & it’s going to get 1,000 Times worse b/c it seems these sports media outlets – which Are NBA partners – do Not want Hinkie to succeed in Phila… but imagine if Phila trots out a line up of Noel, Stauskus, Embiid, Okafor, Simmons, Murray & Paul George – Every struggling team in the NBA would have an All Out Fire Sale! trying to duplicate the same results for their franchises… I’ve been an NBA fan since the early 70’s & I have Never seen anything like this before… This is going to be very fascinating…

whiteflashParticipantI never understood the hype around this dude in the first place. He averaged 11 and 8 in his lone college season and people were talking like he was the next Olajuwon. Add to that his injuries BEFORE being drafted, obvious maturity issues, a weak work ethic and his one season whete he didn’t exactly set the world on fire and the Sixers decided to throw millions at him and waste their top pick. Makes sense.

MopgrassParticipantGet real, he was a massive prospect. Before they found out about his injury he was expected to go 1st.
However, he was new to basketball and his motor memory wouldn’t be as good as a lifelong player. I’m quite concerned that, even if fully healthy, he might not have "it" anymore. I watched him every Kansas game. And wow, impressive. Hope it’s still in there.
The 1st maturity issue I saw was on draft night. They said he was drafted by the Sixers and he looked angry. Announcers played it off like there was a delay on Embiid’s end (for, like, 30 seconds…. right). But he didn’t look unaware, looked mad. They eventually cut back to him, his agent probably yelled at him to smile and act happy. And he did. I remember being pretty put off by it.

NBAjunkie81ParticipantLast January, I attended a Clippers game & I watched Embiid in warm ups & you really can Not take your eyes off the guy.. He seemed bubbly & outgoing, he was clowning around w/ members of Both teams & everyone seemd to enjoy his company – even the Vets gravitated towards him (which really surprised me)… His size & abilities were utterly shocking… He was so smooth & natural w/ both hands, displaying post moves, shooting 3’s & completing trick dunks… He is a real life Giant & he’s not just tall, he is Wide too – he Towered over Blake Griffin, Deandre Jordan & Nerlens Noel – I was floored b/c you never know what the real height of these players are…
I don’t know what the real story is, but, whether it is in Phila or for some other Franchise, I really want to see this guy play, All over the internet for the past year, I have read snippets by GM’s & scouts who watch him in warm ups & practices – & they seem just as awe struck… and b/c he has not played for so long, he is taking on mythical status like "Big Foot" or the "Abinomal Snowman"(hope I spelled that right, lol..)… Supposedly he is Still growing & currently is a Legit 7’2” – that is Nuts for a guy w/ a skill set & a fluidity like that to be That big is So rare – as a fan of the NBA I just hope we at least get a chance to see this kid on the court…

CameronCrazy11ParticipantThese were Hakeem’s freshman numbers:
8.3 ppg, 6.2 rpg, 2.5 bpg on 60% from the field
Here were Joel Embiid’s freshman numbers:
11.2 ppg, 8.1 rpg, 2.6 bog on on 62% from the field
I can see why people don’t like annointing young guys as the next (insert Hall of Famer here) because it’s an inexact science that doesn’t always work out how it’s planned. That being said, I can say without a doubt that Joel Embiid is one of the most naturally talented big men that I’ve ever seen. It was a gamble but after his freshman year, he looked like a future stud.

whiteflashParticipantThat is so dumb. Everyone throws thumbs downs my way but forget that people were saying almost the exact same thing about Michael Olawakand, and then Greg Oden, and then Embiid…. Oden at least could really play, just couldn’t stay healthy. Embiid was "a masive prospect" because it’s a watered down league with basically zero true centers and people are lookibg for a homerun in the next great big man. And people who think he moves and plays like a young Olajuwon are out of their fucking minds.

BKGingerSnapParticipantBig men with chronic foot injuries generally don’t make it in the NBA. That article is just a lot of speculation on the attitude stuff. Hinkie could easily be throwing that stuff out there to deflect that he made a horrible draft pick hoping it work out like Noel a year earlier. The bigger issue is that Embiid isn’t healthy and probably will never be 100% ever again.

Ebown5ParticipantI’m a die hard Sixer fan.
Embiid has not been a great patient. That has been documented and admitted to. He apparently was not very disciplined before he got back on the court, and is immature.
Some of the main charges in the article are factually incorrect though, and that makes me take the rumor type stuff with a grain of salt.
Here are four facts that the article got wrong, some of which have already had to be corrected.
1. MCW was drafted in 2013 and not 2014
2. The MCW trade was not a surprise to Brett Brown as he talked about how Hinkie approached him with the potential deal a few days before in his office.
3. Saric DOES have a buyout after this season
4. Emviid was not told not to go to The Vegas summer league, and in fact flew out with the CEO of the team.

WinterSoldierParticipantHere is another article on Embiid. If it’s true I feel really bad I was hoping for him to be the next dominate center.

Ebown5ParticipantThis isn’t another article. It is a rehash of the same article.
Now is when the feeding frenzy begins. One report comes out, and everyone else reports on the report, and suddenly it is a huge story.
Just remember that Embiid was shooting without a boot on at Sixers summer league practices. It certainly didn’t seem like the Sixers expected him to be in a boot at that time even though this article states that he was expected to be wearing a boot.

Adidas30ParticipantHe is still very young and has plenty of time to grow on/off court I personally haven’t closed the book on him yet. Maybe a change of scenery for him could do wonders because honestly at this point he may never play a game for philly I still think he has the talent to were teams would bite on him off talent alone(trade bait)… He needs to be somewhere with veterans that would really enforce basketball ethics … He wouldn’t do this in LA with a Kobe or a Spurs or lebron team

ropeParticipantI think there might be a tiny bit of a Darko analogy to this, even though Embiid is hurt and Darko was not.
Where I would see a similarity is that they took a really young kid who was not really going to be part of the on court product. They weren’t part of the team in the same way and found they really liked the perks of being rich, young and not obligated to their team mates in a noticable way. The drifted. They went through the motions. They were being instructed by low leverl staffers, rather than coaches, so they didn’t listen. And then they bust.
The other analogy I see here is Matt Millen and the Lions. One of Millen’s draft "strategies" was to draft players who were undervalued because they missed time due to injuries n their last college season. Noel and Embiid were similar risks. It didn’t work out for the Lions and it isn’t really working for the Sixers. Like a lot of pro athletes say – "The most important ability is availability."
This team does have some pieces, but the rest probably need to be assembled by another guy and it is easy to say that Embiid might not be one of them when they get it going.

BothTeamsPlayedHardParticipantIt is still way too early to write off Embiid’s career. Given that he was raw coming out of Kansas, missing two years does not help the cause. Nobody misses two years and comes back like nothing happened. It is a terrible start, but big men are never really given up for dead. Nikoloz Tskitishvili was given a look this month. If Darko wanted to make a comeback, some team would bring him in for a look.

TrillaParticipantYeah Saric was quoted as saying that the only reason he is still overseas is because his team wouldnt let him leave this season

HitsterParticipantThe problem with foot injuries are that they can often re-occur as happened with Yao which finished his career.
I read the article and if Embiid isn’t listening to his team’s medics then it is worrying and something the 76ers need to address. His contract may well not be insured as he was injureed when they drafted him too. But if the 76ers had decided he needed surgery then I’d assume they would schedule it ASAP. I doubt any major sportsman contracted to a professional team could delay surgery to apparently party during summer league as was alledged.
Dario Saric was always going to take time to come over and Hinkie made that trade to get a pick back from Orlando which they owed from the D12/Iggy/Bynum trade.
