I just read the new player comparison on this site for joel embiid, and while I hope he can live up to those lofty expectations, I dought he will. what does every one else think of this comparison?

You should have added Hakeem name in your question. What has amaze me with Joel is his corination for a legit 7’1ft player. He definetly isn’t a stiff. The kid has only been playing ball for a few years and has improved this much with a good shooting stroke and passer. That is a crazy expection to have to think he’ll ever be at Hakeem level, but I do understand the comparison.

I don’t know how to spell corination. I can’t check my spelling on my cell.

Kid is really impressive. These are highlights from his 3rd college game.  His footwork is really what coach self raves about.  More offensive skill than drummond right now and shows very good touch on his outside game.  I think he projects as a top option for an NBA team in the future.

The kid is fluid with his moments. He hasn’t filled out either, and added with potential rising skills. Me personally I would take him top five.

Remember me a bit of Greg Oden on D, but Embiid is more polished than Greg in the other side of the court

I like Embiid as a prospect but I have to think his career will be closer to that of Samuel Dalembert than The Dream who started his NBA career with 12 straight 20 and 10 seasons. His career averages are 22 11 and 3 blocks…those are huge numbers for any player.

I just don’t see any NBA team winning two titles with Embiid as their best player…but he should be a capable NBA starter if he continues to develop…will he develop into a potential league MVP though…I don’t think so.

Why not? The kid is really young and bigs take time to develop. I think he has Potential to be in the challenge of league MVP.

i really like what I see from Embiid, I see another Drummond-like in him

I would take him 4 over Smart.

Comparing Embiid to The Dream is like comparing Wiggins to Lebron, not fair and unrealistic. That being said I think Embiid has great hands, footwork, and terrific balance for a 7ft+ 18 year old. I think Embiid is going to be everything Bynum lived up to.

I dont think he will be as good as hakeem either but he is only 18 and Hakeem was 22 when he entered the NBA. He has time to develop regardless of when he enters the NBA, you should compare them by age, not year in the NBA

Near impossible for him to reach the level of that of a top 5 C all-time. That said he has some similarities to Hakeem. Like Hakeem at a similar age he hasn’t played a lot of basketball which is right now why he lacks understanding in some areas of the game. He also lacks strength right now. He’s listed at 250 but if he’s really 250 then that’s a skinny 250. He has the frame to carry 20-30 more pounds without losing his agility or speed.

It’s a lofty comparison and one that’s hard to see him reach. With his skill level already, size, and fluidity would not be surprised at all if in 5-6 years we’re talking about him as the best center in the NBA.

I think Embiid’s ceiling is Bynum (healthy), but with all this hype if he somehow does get selected before Smart, Wiggins, Randle, or Parker, he will be one of the biggest busts of all time. Not saying Embiid will bust, but centers in general seem to be bust magnets..

It may seem obsurd to have such lofty expectations, but Joel has that kind of potential. Obviously, Hakeem put in so much work to become an all-time great, but few remember or looked up that his freshman year at Houston he averaged 8 ppg and 6 rpg. He wasn’t the polished player we all saw his rookie year when he burst on the scene to average 20/10 in his first season.

Joel has really showed some real promise this year, and he’s been far more productive than many thought he’d be 4 games into his college career. Look at his stats compared to Andre Drummond and Steven Adams’ first 4 games their freshman years. They have both had relatively early success as NBA players, despite being raw freshman who had a lot of bumps in their season, and early on Embiid is outshining them both, and against better competition than Pitt or U-Conn faced early in their respective seasons.

    Joel Embiid – 19 mpg – 8.8 ppg 8 rpg 1.5 bpg (72% FG / 50% FT) 2.8 PG per game

    Andre Drummond – 19.75 mpg – 5.75 ppg 6.25 rpg 2 bpg (42% FG / 29% FT) 3 PF per game

    Steven Adams – 21 mpg – 7.75 ppg 5.5 rpg 2.25 bpg (66% FG / 75% FT) 1.75 PF per game

Kansas has Florida and New Mexico back to back in middle December. I’m exicted to see how Embiid fares against Patrick Young and Alex Kirk in back to back games. He’s hit his stride against some smaller teams after hauling in 7 boards against Duke, but two big potential draft picks like Young and Kirk will be a better measuring stick for Joel.

I agree 100 with your argument and your angle.  The thing about the Hakeem comparison is that Embiid is actually much bigger as Hakeem wasnt a true 7 footer.  I actually think Patrick Ewing is a better comparison especially is your basing it on physical profile.

Touching on an earlier thread this is the same argument I use to justify my argument that the closest player today to Hakeem is Anthony Davis.  Imagine what Davis numbers would look like if he was playing for Kentucky right now.as.a.JR he would be ridiculously dominate.

I think we have to take the Hakeem comparison as an absolute upside and we have to respect Aran’s views on things like this. Andrew Bynum ( when sound) is a much fairer comparision of what we are likely to see in Joel’s early years. Also Hakeem was 21 when he was drafted and had a quiet start to his college career, red shirting for a year so the player he was in 1982 was vastly different to the elite prospect he was in 1984 who went onto become one of the greatest bigs ever.

Being UK based I have not seen much of Joel this year but will hopefully catch up online soon as I have a few games saved as I want to check Wiggins out mainly. so I don’t feel as if I can comment on his draft prospects too much apart from that he looks a very good prospect but is still very much a work in progress.

Raw big man who looks physically impressive and has a high ceiling…

LETS COMPARE HIM TO HAKEEM AND OTHER ALL TIME GREATS.

Good god. This guy is barely even a decent college player right now. We have no clue how he’ll progress.
