I wasn’t quite sure if Kanter would be traded but I am kind of glad he was. Reasons why I like it:

    • He provided no defense, only offense. Even though Favors can defend well, he needs that extra help especially in the starting lineup.
    • He was unhappy
    • Jazz got a lot for him. Pliess, Grant Jarrett, a future first round pick and second round pick. If I remember right Jarrett is a young player from Arizona similar to Kanter, but he hasn’t quite developed yet.
    • This trade allows the Jazz to keep their lottery pick where its at, or move up. With no center to backup Gobert, Jazz are going to have a small bench. (I don’t know how much Jarrett will contribute to the bench)

Reasons why I don’t like it:

    • The Jazz will not be keeping Perkins. They will buy him out and he is likely to go to the Cavs or the Clippers. I understand that he’s old and consequently does not contribute much. And I understand that the Jazz are more concerned about getting young players right now to build for the future. What I don’t like is right now, the Jazz could really use him. He can provide defense, and intimidation off the bench something that the bench depserately needs now that Gobert is starting. I also think he can be a good mentor for all the young players the Jazz have.

That’s really my only beef about the trade. If I were to grade them, I’d give them a B+. This had better be the last year, the Jazz finish in the lottery. They have a ton of young players and its time to see those young players help the Jazz win games and thus make the playoffs. After this draft, it is time the Jazz start focusing on winning now. They have enough young players for a starting lineup and they will even have some young players on the bench!

Assuming the Thunder resign Kanter, which they should, this was a fantastic trade for them. They needed someone like this, and they aren’t paying Brook Lopez for the same job who plays half the games and makes triple the salary.

I’m not sure if Brooks has the coaching prowess to integrate Kanter into this offense but he needs too. This team now has weapons outside of Westbrook and Durant- they need to be plugged in a meaningful way.

As for the Jazz, they got a solid haul for someone on an expiring contract. They were lucky enough to find a team that was looking to win now and was fine with a center who can’t defend. There aren’t many Serge Ibaka’s out there- a perfect compliment to Kanter- and there aren’t many teams who already have a young defensive guy as well to split time with him – Adams.

Overall I’m psyched about this trade.

Love it for the Thunder as well. They lost Reggie Jackson and got back almost an entire bench; Kanter, Augustin, Singler, and to some extent Steve Novak (watched a lot of him while with NYK, can really shoot the 3 but that’s it…literally).

As you said, Brooks may not have what it takes to integrate Kanter and the rest of these new pieces into the offense. The Thunder have it all now, they really have no weaknesses on either end. Their weakest link at the moment is Brooks, which is crazy to say in light of this team’s continued success. It’s a very similar situation to Mark Jackson being replaced by Steve Kerr in Golden State.

I forget what number Kanter was selected, but after about 4 years you turn that into Grant Jarret, an intl guy I have no clue of, a probable mid 1st rd and 2 rd pick and Perkins who will be bought out. I know he forced Utah’s hand with his trade demand and hasn’t exactly been lighting it up and will be a restricted FA, but Utah shouldn’t be feeling that great about this, I’d probably give them a D.

Don’t sleep on Pleiss. As a fellow german he really is a more than solid talent and already a pro who could have similar impact to what Mirotic has in Chicago.

By NBA standards he isn’t really athletic or strong but is very long, a good defender and rebounder and can shoot the rock very good from midrange. I always hoped he will hook up with the Thunder on a winning team but this never happend. Now with Adams, Kanter, McGary and Collison who was resigned a few weeks ago Pleiss wasn’t part of the Thunder Plans and expendable. Pleiss is already 25 but he chose to stay in Spain to work on his game 2 years ago rather then joining the Thunder which kind of worked out as he has been player of the week for a few times since then. Btw he is 7’2" and him and Gobert could do havoc on defense if he really comes over at some point.

All in all the Jazz got something in return for someone who doesn’t want to be there anymore and on top of that Grant Jarret is the definition of a clue guy and still has some upside.

This was the best trade Utah could have hoped for. The team has freed up playing time for Gobert, found salary relief for this offseason, and picked up a first-round draft pick.

Contrary to what Jazz fans seem to believe, Kanter wasn’t worth much at all. Yet the package the Jazz received is almost as good as what they gave up for three years of Al Jefferson (Kosta Koufos and two first-rounders) in 2010.

Great trade for the Jazz. Great trade for the Thunder.

Now let’s just sign Wesley Matthews this offseason, and we’ll be a much better team in 2015-16.

I don’t think you understand the word great, whatever Kanter’s value is (and I’d argue better than this based on his size, skill and upside) landing a mid 1st Ed pick, grant Jarrett, a 2rd pick and some foreign guy is never great

The Jazz could not have expected anything better for two months of a player that made the team worse on both offense and defense when he was in the game.

Again: The team cleared away cap space (Novak), freed up playing time for Gobert, and acquired several assets.

This trade was an excellent one for the Jazz. Even if the return was modest, it’s certainly better than what they would have received had Kanter walked away this offseason. Sure, they could have matched his deal and paid him $12 million dollars a year to pout, take up Gobert’s PT, and make the team worse. Maybe he would improve enough to help the team, or maybe they could have tried to trade him afterwards with a few more years on his deal; even then, that’s a really stupid way to spend resources, considering that they’d be sacrificing all of their cap space to do it. The team is better off making a run at Matthews, Green, or Leonard in free agency this offseason.

        Great deal for the Jazz.
