SwatLakeCityParticipantThe Jazz just signed former Wizard forward swigman, Josh Howard. espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/7357940/former-dallas-maverick-washington-wizard-josh-howard-agrees-deal-utah-jazz
Do you think its possible that Hayward, Howard, and Miles will all fight for the starting spot? Or will Howard and Burks back up both Hayward and Miles? I really would like to see Howard and Hayward start because that would mean an inconsistent Miles can be on the bench where he belongs. I’m tired of the Jazz starting inconsistent players. The starting lineup is for players that are consistent. I’m not saying that Howard is not inconsistent but at least it will spell Miles, if Howard starts. And maybe this signing will bring back the edge the Jazz lost when AK left via free agency. (and injuries) I just hope Howard doesn’t become another injury prone player. Is this a good signing or a bad signing? Thoughts?

the27guyParticipantAs always the Jazz front office believes that young players need to fight for their playing time. While most fans think young players need to be GIVEN time, the Jazz front office believes they need to earn it.
What this signing means is that you’re going to have to earn your playing time with the Jazz. Outside of the PG spot, there is going to be serious competition at the other four spots, and it’s anyones guess who will claim the minutes.
At the 2, Hayward, Miles, Burks, and Bell are all going to be competing for time.
At the 3, Hayward, Miles, Millsap, Evans, and Howard are all going to be competing for time.
At the 4, Millsap, Jefferson, Favors, Evans, and Kanter are all going to be competing for time.
At the 5, Memo, Jefferson, Favors, and Kanter are all going to be competing for time.
Some people might feel that it "stunts a players growth" when he has to compete against the vets for his time; I disagree. You have to earn playing time to appreciate it. Malone had to take it from Dantley. Stockton had to take it from Ricky Green. Hayward’s going to have to take it from Howard.

butidonthavemoneyActually, there’s a good amount of weed in Utah. Porn too. More people watch porn in Utah than any other state.

CheesusParticipantFinally someone who gets it. I’m so sick of hearing all the Jazz fans compaining about free agent signings becasue it will "stunt the young players’ growth" do people not understand that players need other players to practice against? competition is a good thing, especially in the NBA. The young guys will get better by learning from and outplaying these vetrans during practice and earning playing time (especially this year when depth will be important). I personally like having Bell, Howard, and Okur on the team. All three have been on successful teams. All three have been on teams that have made deep playoff runs. I think the young players on the team will be able to learn from these guys. And I hope the Jazz play there hardest to make the playoffs. I’m tired of Jazz fans saying that we should tank just to get better draft pick in a loaded draft. The Jazz have enough young players.

chevilicousParticipantI totally agree that they need to work and compete for their playing time. I just hope to god the orginization as it goes forward realizes we have better options at the 2 than Mr. Inconsistent CJ Miles, the dude has been given the benefit of the doubt for years, and has always rested on the excuse "well he’s still really young". Well guess what you’re a veteran now, it’s time to put up or shut up, and lets hope they dont let burks walk to keep miles for the future like they did Matthews and Brewer. Also do you guys remember when Deron had to fight for playing time behind Milt Palacio? That shit still cracks me up.

SwatLakeCityParticipantIn the end I think the starting lineup will look like this: Jefferson, Millsap, Hayward, Miles, Harris (No real 6th man on the bench except for possibly Burks or Howard)
After about 10 or 15 games into the season I think that Favors will be inserted in the starting lineup and Millsap will go to the bench as a 6th man. I like Millsap, but I think he is a lot better defensively off the bench. Also the Jazz’s frontcourt gets a little bigger with Favors in there instead of Millsap. Will help out against tougher, and bigger teams.
After the trade deadline, I expect to see Burks inserted into the starting lineup and Mr. Inconsistent Miles will go to the bench.
I think CJ Miles is a lot like JR Smith, chevilicious, very inconsistent, yet when he’s on, he is a potent 3pt shooter and that is what teams need in close games. I like Miles for that reason. He’s more of a spark plug off the bench and if he is inconsistent on the bench at least it won’t hurt the Jazz’s starting lineup. JR Smith eventually lost time when Denver brought in Afflalo, and I think the same will eventually happen with Alec Burks. He won’t start immediately, but sometime this season I expect him to be starting.

bebopParticipantThats prob how the lineup will go. However, Burks has said that he’s been bringing the ball up alot in practice, so if he can make a full transition to the one, we could see a starting backcourt of Burks and Hayward, which would be sick.

the27guyParticipantSince we’re talking about starting lineups, I’ll throw my two cents in.
C-Jefferson
PF-Favors
SF-Millsap
SG-Hayward
PG-Harris
Everyone keeps talking about how Millsap’s too slow to play the 3. When he played the 3 last year I didn’t see that.
So here’s the question… and I think it’s a good one. Which would you rather live with…
1. Millsap’s inabilty to guard 4’s because of their size/length or
2. Millsap’s lack of speed against 3’s?
I say give him a shot against the 3’s.

chevilicousParticipantI dunno why they should have to give up anything defensively and just start hayward or howard at the 3, Millsap in my mind is an ideal 6th man in the NBA if he accepts that role, tweeners have historically dominated as the first guy of the bench due to the fact that they aren’t required to cover the other teams best players for as long of period of time, and they can flourish against other teams 2nd units, which is exactly what millsap can do, he has proven over time that he struggles against big 4’s, and I think quick 3’s would be even worse. Why not be the horse off the bench win a couple 6th man awards and average 15 a night.
