KGMNParticipantI don’t watch much college basketball, but from highlights videos, I can’t get the idea out of my head that Tatum reminds me a lot of Derrick Williams. What are the differences in their games?

OhCanada-ParticipantTatum has a better handle, can get his shot off much more easily has a better release, better footwork, more slight build. Defensively he shows alot more upside as well as he can possibly gaurd positions 2-4 where Williams has proven to be the bad kind of tweener. All Williams has proven to be good for is instant offense. His reaction time is slow and he seems to be a step behind all the time. Also has heavy feet despite being an above average athlete.

Memphis MadnessParticipantDerrick Williams seems more athletic. He had some highlight dunks at Arizona. Maybe I missed those from Tatum. Tatum might be like Mike Beasley. Not super thrilled about the guy.
The Kings are hoping he falls to 10. They go BPA at 5 which is probably a point guard, then he would be their future small forward with the 10th pick.
Or, Detroit at 12.
I doubt anyone is falling in love with him…
There are some better UPSIDE guys ahead of him. Guys who have higher FLOORS, too.

MettaWorldDurant1ParticipantJ Tatum is a solid 3 point shooter to start. He can score in bunches and is elite in ISO and postup situations. Underrated handle imo as well…Derrick Williams Was BELieved to be a elite physical prospect with high upside…. today D WILL Is solid athelete who isn’t good at anything

binetParticipantTatum is not good at anything either though…
Williams is a career 46/90 on 3 pointers in College. You just could not know at the time he could not shoot. The volume is not there but you could argue that was due to his value inside the paint and the fact coach did not allow bigs to take 3s as much as what tatum did at the time. Honestly, Tatum has not proven more 3 point capability on the NCAA level, sorry.

KGMNParticipantIf I remember correctly, Derrick Williams was billed as a very good 3-pt shooter, as evidence by his >50% 3-pt shooting his sophomore year. Good scorer off the dribble, and skilled at taking it to the rim. Had defensive potential with his athleticism, but yet unrealized.

KGMNParticipantSomeone developed a model through which Tatum performed really well. He was in the top 2 prospects, if not first. People are debating between him and Isaac, and hoping one of them drops. They highly doubt he will drop to 7. So some people are falling in love with him.

Memphis MadnessParticipantIf the Knicks move on from Carmelo then I can see them taking Tatum at 8.

llperezDerrick Iliana hasn’t panned out but he was a very good prospect going into draft. Crazy to think there were actually debates about him vs Kylie for #1 pick. But Derrick was legit in college, he just turned out to be too much of tweener without bringing enough of any one skill. But he dropped 36 on duke in sweet 16 and had everyone gushing.

nill650ParticipantI do not see Williams skillset or upside coming into the league as being remotely similar to Tatums.
Tatum is arguably the best iso prospect in this draft with a strong mid range game He has improved his spot up shooting compared to HS , but is still a work in progress from deep. Midpost footwork/moves are elite for his age, high release jumper and solid handle where he won’t get bogged down by double teams etc etc.
Williams was also a solid slasher and decent in iso againt pf in college shooting a low amt of 3’s but hitting them efficiently enough to break down his defender in college despite not having the handle to do so in the pros. He had and still has uncommon explosiveness that got him drafted 2nd before the likes of Kawhi & Butler who both have had stellar careers . I think the biggest issue that Williams has had to own up too & faced was his stubborn attitude coming in demanding of himself and his coaches that he play the 3 not the 4. But he never found that high % shot even when he did log minutes at the 3. and he hasn’t improved his handle enough to play the 3 other than end of the rotation regular season minutes as a good defender 1-4 but again his rebounding is still lacking to much to play the 4 and he still gets caught ball watching. I think the bottom line with Williams is he does not have a high bb iq, where as Tatum certainly seems to.
The games of these 2 players are not on the same tier.

holefillers1ParticipantTatum’s floor/ceiling is TJ Warren/Joe Johnson

Memphis MadnessParticipantAn ISO JOE clone should go somewhere in the 8 to 12 range.
Minny is picking at 7, but I doubt they take him… They might be better off taking Zach Collins as a nice 2-way big man. But, that might be a bit high for him, too. 6-10 is a weird range…
You might be able to combine this thread with the Carmelo Trade thread. Knicks trade Carmeo for assets, and then take Jayson Tatum as their Carmelo replacement…
Maybe they can trade Carmelo to Portland for random players, and those first rounders (15, 20, and 26). Carmelo could be the third option that they are looking for in Portland… Then they consolidate players…

khaled_a_dParticipantAs a prospect and before his NBA weakness was exposed Derrick was by far the better prospect IMHO.
This is why draft is a crap shot at the end of the day, Players like him,Turner,Beasley wasn’t supposed to be having the career they had right now,but even with such prospects there is always the risk they can’t handle pro life and their games won’t translate0 - Posted on: Sat, 06/17/2017 - 6:31pm #1100644
mowestenParticipantTatum was a point guard in high school early in his career ,,, to me, he is similar to Otto Porter with a better handle and better shot creator
Of all the comparisons one could make for Tatum and NBA guys, Williams is not one that would have ever come to mind. I don’t think their games are similar at all, but I’ve seen Tatum play since junior high and the Original poster says he doesn’t watch basketball so draw your own conclusions.
