Jason Kidd joins a list of the greatest players to become an NBA head coach

After thinking about Jason Kidd becoming a head coach it got me wondering who the best players in the NBA to become a head coach. Off the top of my head this is my list.

Tier 1
Bill Russell
Magic Johnson
Larry Bird

Tier 2
Isiah Thomas
Jason Kidd
Kevin McHale
Bob Cousy
Lenny Wilkens
Dave Cowens

Tier 3
Paul Westphal
Mark Jackson
Doc Rivers
Moe Cheeks
Scott Skiles
Byron Scott
Don Nelson
Jerry Sloan

I know there are other guys like the ones below but they were probably better coaches than players.
Pat Riley
Phil Jackson
Doug Collins
Paul Silas
Avery Johnson
KC Jones

I know there are probably a bunch of guys I am forgetting but I think the top 3 tiers are pretty solid players. Jason Kidd is easily one of the top 10 former players turned NBA coach all time.

Usually the former players

Usually the former players who tend to succeed as coaches were those that weren't superstars or physically gifted but used their basketball intellect to have a long playing career.

Rudy Tomjanovich is really

Rudy Tomjanovich is really underrated by people nowadays. Back in his day he was one of the best power forwards in the league. Made 4 straight All-Star games before the punch that almost ended his career, missed most of that year and then made the All-Star team the following year as well.

I don't know about having

I don't know about having Collins in Tier 2. Those other Tier 2 guys are hall of famers and guys that are among the 50 greatest players in history.
