I just have this nagging feeling that Jabari Parker is not coming out this year and will choose to go back to Duke for at least another year instead.   You can almost see it in him, being the religious and devoted Mormon that he is.  I feel he’d rather choose a religious and scholarly path before the materials path, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.  And, Duke will also have some awesome new players next year as well.  So, assuming he and Joel Embiid choose not to declare for the draft this year,  and therefore throwing a monkey wrench into the whole predicted draft order and shattering at least two NBA teams’ dreams, what do you think the new top six draft picks prediction would be, taking into account each team’s needs ?

I really would be surprised. In basketball terms it makes no sense, of the 6 or so "top" guys in this draft he is the most known quantity and most ready to contribute. Wiggins, Exum and Embiid are all upside guys, Smart now has some issues hanging over him and Randle is a bully in college but some question his ability to translate that game to the NBA. But with Parker scouts think you get what to see – a high-level scoring wing in the ‘melo/Pierce (ceiling) mould with a high floor.

He can only lose stock in another college season, in fact Smart is the best example of this, known-quantity/low floor, top 3 pick guy who stayed and now has some question marks. Some guys really do benefit from staying in college – Wade, and more recently Lillard), but these guys were in a system where they had the ball in their hands a lot. I just don’t see Parker from benefitting from another year – and he’ll have people making sure he knows this.

Working under the unlikely assumption that both Parker and Embiid stay in school, this would make Wiggins a lock for the #1 pick.  Then, I think Exum goes second, Randle goes third, Vonleh goes fourth, Smart goes fifth, and Ennis goes sixth.  The bottom half of the lottery would be a mix between Saric, McDermott, Anderson, Young, LaVine, and Warren.  Cauley-Stein, Tarczewski, Gordon, Capela, and Hood would be in the mix as well.

    No.

    Jabari Parker will go pro.

    As will Joel Embiid.

It defies all logic to turn down being a TOP 3 pick in the NBA draft.

In Parker’s case, he is one of the most NBA ready players in college, there is literally no upside to him coming back.

I’m not sure where you get this idea his religious beliefs are going to force him to want to stay in school..there is no way he is staying for 4 years, and so its not like he will get a degree if he stays one more.

Jabari shouldn’t stay but I’d he did that Duke team next year would be one hell of a team with the recruiting class they have coming him.

P.S. I don’t think the Magic should draft him because he plays a lot like Tobias Harris ( Just thought I should let everyone know)

His ceiling is infinitely higher than Tobias. Also, Harris isn’t really a great shooter, especially from beyond the arc. Jabari and he have really similar bodies, but their skillsets do have some differences. Regardless, the Magic wouldn’t hesitate to trade Tobias if they thought that Parker was the right choice and then some redundancies in their game became apparent.

I agree but if they had to choose between Embiid, Parker, and Wiggins. Parker should be the last choice of those 3.

My nephew also has a nagging feeling there is a dragon living under his bed. Both assumptions are as likely and logical.

Jabari was talking in a midseason interview with ESPN as if it were already a forgone conclusion that he will be entering the draft. He didn’t even mention the possibility of coming back when he was asked the question about his position in the 2014 draft. I thought there was a chance he would return until I saw that.

I could see him coming back to try to win a national championship with one of his best friends Jahlil Okafor but i seriously doubt that happens

But just imagine if he stays:

    PG: Tyus Jones
    SG: Grayson Allen
    SF: Justise Winslow
    PF: Jabari Parker
    C: Jahlil Okafor

With Sulaimon and Cook coming off the bench. That would instantly be one of the most talented teams in NCAA history.

another year and go from being the heir apparent to a guy fighting to get the ball. He’d transfer or go pro. And I don’t blame him. These "Super Teams" are made with the one and done mindset, and if a kid stays (look at Alex Poythress at UK), then the next super class takes all the love. Sulaimon would bolt.

There has been the question mark about Jabari Parker doing his two year Mormon missionary work which his faith likes young people to do. I recall Shawn Bradley played a year’s college ball then did his missionary work in Australia before declaring for the 1993 NBA draft.

If Jabari did choose to follow a similar path then I’d assume that if he declared, teams would want to know if his intention was to play straight away. Imagine he is drafted in the top 3 and then announces he’s going to work in say South America doing charity work for two years, whilst this would be very noble, I bet that the team that drafted him would not be too happy. If he did declare and say he’d be doing his faith work for two years, I still think he’d go pretty high. Noel went 6th last year with a serious injury and the likelihood he missed a lot of this season, Rubio was taken 5th when he was unlikely to come over straight away, Jonas V went 5th when again he was likely to wait a year. Even the great David Robinson had to wait two years for his NBA debut but was still a top pick back in 1987 due to his millitary tour of duty.

Parker whilst a great prospect isn’t at the comparitive level Robinson was but he is certainly as good or better than Rubio was when he was drafted. Adding in that this year is a deep draft I’d be surprised if Parker fell out of the top 6 or 7 even if he said he would not go onto a team for two years.

If Parker did decide to spend 2 years doing his faith work, he could keep the options open to return to Duke by not declaring or follow the Bradley route and declare when he was ready to go to the NBA in say 2016. The interesting option is he maybe does his faith work but declares in 2015, that way he gets onto a team but they only have to wait one year for him the same as say for Jonas V. That would consolidate him as a likely top 5 pick even if a team had to wait a year.

Parker’s choice this summer is entirely his own and I will not comment on what option I think he should choose.

To be outed as the Mormon prospect, in this day and age??? I have always questioned the depths of his Mormon convictions. I’m sure he’ll be changing his tune once he hits the league and those checks start rolling in. I’m not saying he’s going to turn into Allen Iverson overnight but he better try to silence that Mormon talk By June.
