The Island of Misfit Toys: The Phoenix Suns

Whether you're a fan of what the Suns have done this offseason or not, Phoenix has had one of the most interesting summers I've seen in a while. Here are bullet points of what the Suns have done this offseason in no particular order

  • First off they got rid of or decided against resigning their elderly veterans (Redd and Hill) and face of the franchise (Steve Nash), but signed a different veteran (Scola).
  • Second, they rid themselves of unproductive/inconsistant role players (Childress and Warrick).
  • Thirdly, the Suns acquired multiple draft picks (two 1st rounders and two 2nd rounders from LAL and another 1st rounder from Minn).
  • Fourthly, Phoenix signed Eric Gordon to a max contract offer sheet, saw it get matched, and ended up just resigning Shannon Brown instead, saving money for a possible run at James Harden next summer.
  • Finally they decided on acquiring younger talent by the draft and free agency (Marshall, Dragic, Beasley, and Johnson).

All of this in the spand of a month. Now all of the new players they acquired (minus Dragic) were unwanted one way or another. Scola was amnestied by the Rockets. Beasley was considered a goner in Minnesota as far back as last summer. Wesley Johnson has been seen as a bust and was easily let go by Minnesota. NBA scouts didn't consider Marshall to be a lottery pick. Even Dragic wasn't seen by Houston to deserve the money the Suns gave out to him. Now can these unwanted players come together and prove that they indeed can be effective NBA players? I'm not sure but I can't wait to find out!

Suns

Man, this team is going to look so different. I'm glad they picked up Dragic, he is so talented and cheap at the same time. I just remember him torching the Spurs in the playoffs a few years ago, he played incredibly.

So they'll go

So they'll go Dragic-Brown-Beasley-Scola-Gortat with Marshall, Dudley, Wes Johnson, Markief Morris off the bench?

Fan.

I like what Phoenix has done. I think most of the bball community will be shaking their heads next year when it becomes obvious that Dragic is a top-10 pg. People were shocked at the "over payment" he received at $9M/year. I think it will prove a bargain.

Im lovin it!

You know what happened to those misfit toys though right? The promise land! lol! Seriously though should be a fun ride with all the talented young guys. They should sign Milicic as back up center.

They actually will be tough

They actually will be tough to guard but possibly the worst defensive team in the NBA though Gortat is solid.

Ya, phoenix did good over the offseason.

They will be a solid 30-35 win team next season.

It might be a long shot but

It might be a long shot but I'm praying for Beasley to show people that he was written off as a franchise cornerstone to early in his career.

If Harden signs next year

If Harden signs next year they'll have a bunch of left handed players (Harden, Dragic, Marshall, Beasley) haha
