How good do you think Isaiah Austin will be in the NBA?

I am just not convinced that he will be able to get his shots, unless he is wide open, because of his lack of strength. He doesn’t have the offensive game inside, which is why i didn’t compare him to any true post players. I mainly was looking at stretch fours.

Poor man’s Heat’s Chris Bosh, with more range.
Not Channing Frye, not BJ mullens.
His body is coming along pretty nice since the start of the season.
I like him in that 10-15 range, would easily take him over Alex Len.
What makes him the most intriguing is his ability to shoot it ANYHOW. off the dribble, off the post, catch and shoot. Close, mid and long range.

1st or 2nd big off the bench. Spot up shooting, pick n pop specialist. Huge bust potential if he’s taken high. I don’t even see him being that big of a threat as a face up player because he has no counter if defenders play him for the shot.

Like i just said, what makes him special is his ability to get his outside shot ‘up’, with different array of moves… floaters and all (as a legit 7 footer). He is not someone you have to strictly spot up like Kyle Wiltjer. His handles cant get any better for a 7ft freshman.
He doesn’t have good post game because he cant establish deep position, but he actually has some skill in the block, more so than Len who is often regarded as ‘extremely skilled’.
And yes, Austin can score inside, he knows how to use his freaky length when he gets in position.
The stronger he gets, the stronger his stock is getting.

His handles don’t matter if he lacks quickness and agility. If he gets run off his shot what is he gonna do, take the ball straight into the help defense?
What makes Bosh special is not only his shot but his quickness. If defenders play him for the shot, he can just show n go and get to the bucket with quickness.

I also think that because of Austin’s terrible frame, he can only add a certain amount of bulk and mass, which still won’t be enough for him to be a legit post up threat.

I think Austin’s first step is decent for a big (7’1), quickness will only get better as time goes thru.

Length is best used on defense. Austin does not use his length well defensively. Gobert is a defensive-minded big with a bigger wing-span.

Austin is getting 1 SPG and 1.5 BPG as a Fresh. If Rudy played in Austin’s posit in Baylor he would get like .5 SPG and 2.5 BPG.
In which case, Austin’s offense would makes up more for his “lack” of defense, more than Gobert’s defense makes up for his lack of offense.
Any way, neither will be a good NBA defender. Gobert is about right on par athletically with Austin.

Both of them are huge question marks but I prefer Gobert since he has like half a foot of reach on Austin, is more agile and he naturally gravitates to paint play.

He’s got an uphill battle to add weight and more agility, Chris Bosh is polished all around and has a nice low post game that he can’t use anymore, like siggy said you have to respect bosh or he will just take it to the rack, did you watch him play last night? Perhaps he’s flexing harder in the second pick but there is no denying Austin body has been progressing at a good rate.

Yea he got Kevin Durant legs but you simply can’t overlook skill, and production to certain extent. Austin is the same guy who gets more rebounds than Alex Len. Rudy Gobert is getting 5rpg per 20 minutes which is also less than Austtin even if you adjust time.
If he was Austin was getting…….. 13.6ppg 6rpg .4bpg .3spg I would understand the hate.
But he happens to be averaging 13.6ppg 9rpg 1.5bpg 1spg. Pretty solid numbers across the board.
Give him all the time Plumlee’s had to develop and how good would he be?

Len is only 4 months older than Austin and has over 30 lbs on him. Len has a really good frame that’s just starting to fill out. He could be around 265-270 by the time he’s done filling out. I know who I’d favor fighting for boards on the interior in the NBA. Same thing with Gobert. He already has a stronger base, a better frame with more agility than Austin and he’s being groomed to play in the paint.

After 4 yrs I still think Austin will be thin and perimeter oriented. Sure there is some value to a stretch 4, but I personally value a big who can help control the paint.

7 footers who can shoot don’t grow on trees. Considering how often teams go small now there’s no way and how often teams reach on big men, there’s no way he doesn’t end up a lottery pick.

Ajinca was actually more similar to Austin offensively. He didn’t bang around the paint because he couldn’t. He’d rather play on the perimeter and shoot jumpers.
Gobert is strictly an interior player. He also has the better frame now and weighs more now at the age of 20 than Ajinca ever did.

He simply has to add weight and strength, then he must add post game. This way he could be a very intriguing player with size and shot. Otherwise he has no position… too weak to play in the paint (and injury prone…) not enough skill to play outside.

I’m also a big fan of Austin’s game and I think if he continues to play well and put up production in conference play he’s gonna be a top 10 lock. I think his numbers are actually going to go up a little and by the end of the season he’ll be averaging around 15ppg and 10rpg but he should become one of the rare freshman to average a double double in a tough conference.

I’ve never understand all the hate that Austin get’s, I think he’s a very similar prospect to Lamarcus Aldridge coming out of Texas except Aldridge stayed 2 years and used his added weight to do work in the post. But Austin is already putting up better numbers as a freshman then Aldridge as a sophomore and is also showing off a wider ranging skill set.

Austin does need to continue to add weight and whatever teams that drafts him needs to make sure he don’t fall in love with the jump shot and spends time in the paint. Greg Monroe is another talented big that Austin reminds me of. But I do think Austin is more of a true big man then a stretch big man because he will go down low and get rebounds and block shots. Plus his length advantage can’t be ignored.

A few months ago Chad Ford reported teams having Austing in their top 5. I really wouldn’t be surprised to see Austin drafted top 7, this depends on how he ends the season. If he starts putting up really good numbers he will probably become a top 5 pick based on age, production and physical tools.

I remember seeing that not to long ago and wondered what teams had him in the top 5. I think that is important remember he didn’t say lottery teams he just said some teams have him in thier top 5. A team like The Bobcats having you in the top 5 should be looked at vastly different than if a team like San Antonio had you in thier top 5.

Isaiah Austin is an interesting case. He has all the skills to be a top prospect, he’s young enough to have upside, but it seems that he gets more criticism than guys in the past like Austin Daye or John Henson. You watch him play against Gonzaga and Kansas, and Kentucky and see him putting up numbers against NBA Sized talent and you think okay this is the week his stock shoots up but, he stays around the same. The he has a 20 rebound game and you think okay this is the week his stock shoots up but, it stays about the same. The biggest criticism on him that I’ve seen or heard has been his lack of position. So in some ways he may be a victim of his own versatilty. Personally, I think he’s as good a prospect as any in this draft.

The Big 12 season has really been hard on him. If he was shooting better than a 43 percent clip and better than the low 30s from three, it would be a different story. If he can shoot, he has a place. With the way he is playing now it is probably best for him to return for another year.
