I’ve been hypping Isaac Humphries for the last 18 months, yet he’s continued to fly under the radar based on a lack of US based production.

At the start of the season when Skal Labissiere was still the #1 prospect, I was universally ridiculed for suggesting that Hump would be Kentucky’s starting centre before the end of the season and compared him with Marc Gasol.

Yesterday, Humphries had a breakout game that suggested he’s going to be Kentuckys first-choice bigman for the remainder of the season. This would surprise many as UKs frontcourt is full of future pros.

He was inserted in the lineup and completely changed the dynamic of the game with his size, defense and rebounding ability.

He made what would have been the game winning block (had it not been for possibly the worst Technical Foul of the season for overcelebrating his game-winning play). It was his 5th foul, and Skal was inserted into the lineup and got abused on defense….Texas A&M steal the game.

Humphries is the youngest player in all off College Basketball and isn’t eligible for the upcoming draft. However, I believe he warrants consideration as a top-5 pick in 2017 alongside other promising bigs DeAndre Ayton and Thon Maker.

Kentucky Fans: How do you feel about Humphries as the starting center in March Madness and what do you feel his pro potential is?

He’s the Australian poster Rip who got his account banned for saying ridiculous stuff like Jon Jones can play in the NBA. He’s been around for a while.

And Rip, I’ve never had a problem with you as a poster when you were still Rip. You’re right though that onced you changed your name, the negs stopped raining lmao.

That block was big at the end, reminded me for a bit of Bogut there with that huge defensive prescence. That T the ref gave was stupid though. You can see that the Kentucky players were happy for him that he got that huge block, and weren’t really that mad when he got that T. I love the emotion from this kid.

No doubt he’s a pro at the next level with that wiiiiiiide body of his. He’s going to shadow the paint at the next level for sure and I feel that will be his niche.

I like Humphries and won’t ridicule you for suggesting that he has top 5 potential but I definitely need to see more.  What I have liked is that he’s a quick learnner.  He used to come in the game and just pick up dumb fouls immediately. He still picks up some dumb ones but he has definitely toned it down.

He’s a big body, with great hands, a soft touch around the basket, good looking mid range shot, and he competes on defense and on the boards.  High IQ player with a good feel for the game but shows his lack of experience at times just like any other freshman. My only knock on him would be that he’s a below the rim player and struggles with hedging and recovering in pick and rolls but that’s about it.  He’s a suprisingly good rim protector at this level, however that could in the NBA. Maybe it will, maybe it won’t, who knows.

Right now, I think he’s definitely in the mix as a 1st round pick for 2017 but maybe not the lottery. I just need to see more. I like his game thought and he will be a pro. Rather he’s a backup or starter in the NBA will depend on whether he can rim protect. If he can’t rim protect without fouling, he’ll be a backup similar to Cole Aldrich (who’s actually and underrated player). If he CAN rim protect without fouling, I could see him as a player similar to Bogut. Hopefully, Humph won’t have as many injuries.

Also, you suggested that he will be a starter, and that thought never crossed my mind during the game but I could see it.  He’s easily UK’s best rebounder and defends the post better than Marcus Lee. Last night, I think he pushed himself ahead of Skal in the rotation and should be the first big off the bench. Right now, Cal only plays Humph when the other team has a true big man and Idk if Cal wants to start him as it may kill Marcus Lee’s confidence even more since this was supposed to be his breakout year. I like the Big Auss’s game and he probablly should be the starter going forward but if not, he’ll still finish many games many games for UK

I agree with Bankroll PJ that it may not be good for Marcus Lee if Humphries ends up starting, but I think he could be the best big man on our team by the end of the year. Even though we lost, I’m not even mad at that tech. It showed he plays with emotion and puts his heart into the game, which I love to see. I wouldn’t want him playing with Lee or Labissiere, but putting him with Poythress who could mask some of his immobility could be a good combo.

More about that tech, I hate how refs are so willing to punish these young guys for playing with emotion instead of being robots. If he slammed it and it went above the rim I would still say that, but he clearly didn’t mean to throw it down the court and meant to dribble it hard and catch it. You can tell by the way his arm moved and his face when it came out of his hand. Jay Bilas talked about this: they wouldn’t have T’d him up for throwing it straight down and catching it, so what’s the difference? The motive was the same. Refs think too highly of themselves sometimes. The only thing I hate about refs more than when they punish people for playing with emotion is when they go out of their way to prove that they’re in charge (i.e. when the woman ref gave CP3 a T in a close game a few weeks ago when he didn’t say a word. I hate the Clippers but even I was furious).

Being a fellow Aussie,  I’m probably biased but I’ve been saying this about Humphries for a while. He absolutely dominated junior tournaments for Australia against the best players in the world his age.

In the U17 WorldChampionships, he set a tournament record with 41 points against Canada and also had 19 boards and 6 blocks (credited with 5 but stat counters missed one). He shot 16/23 from the field and 9/11 from the line. I was already impressed before that game but watching him go to work in that game I came away certain he’d be an NBA center.

I’ve always seen him as a Marc Gasol-type player and I think their games are very similar. He’s not going to blow anyone away with his athleticism, but (like Gasol), he’s losing his baby-fat as he matures into his frame. As we say in Australia… he’s a Big Unit!

What makes me believe he can make the jump to the NBA is he’s a very intelligent young man, a skillful  (and willing) passer, sets good hard screens and has a soft touch around the rim. He’s not an ‘above the rim’ player at this stage, but like Gasol, he’s crafty, has good footwork, and makes the right plays.

As an Aussie hoops fan, I hope he keeps improving so I have another countryman to cheer on in the league. As an objective scout, I think if he improves his lateral quickness and athleticism he’ll be a handful for a lot of bigs on both ends of the floor.

There will continue to be bad calls and tension until the referees are held publically accountable for their performance.  Yeah, reffing games is hard.  You know what’s harder?  Being a player and trying to guess when the ref is going to call you for a charge and when it’s going to be a block.

It’s a total farce that coaches can’t directly and publically complain about bad officials.  What incentive would they ever have to change?

Of Cole Aldrich the college version. Which is good but not top 5 good. Lottery with a year to grow is not impossible.
